@dagodan

while i haven't used as many silver inkjet printables as alkohol, both binkie and i "prefer" them as they have the "holographic" look to them after printing; however, for Taiyo Yudens, only the white inkjet printables are to the hub, the silver inkjets are NOT hub-printable~ :) can't go wrong with either or, it's more of a "personal preference" thing aesthetically speaking... :)

@mort81 & aabbccdd

i just got a new case few weeks ago to house my MAIN rig in...it's an Antec Sonata II black (with no window)~ as Antec's quote goes, "The Power of You...Silence is beautiful" i will have to agree with both of ya that it's a great case, the "snapping" in of the optical drives and hard drives and floppy drive (yes i still have a floppy for my BIOS flashes hehe) to secure the components is a great and tidy feature, the front panel is like a "door" that opens and closes with a key to "lock" it up~ :)

the clear windowed case is my 2nd computer that i use for a "backup" rig (my wife uses the purty colored lights one), it's a lil bit slower than my comp, but still useable...

anyways, yeah, i really like Antec cases, their power supplies are not too shabby either, got a Antec 450w SmartPower 2.0 currently in the Antec case that does the job...i actually got the modular powersupply for future use when i go with an AMD dual core setup...

keep all the great info coming, i check all the advice/tips in this thread first everyday before i help others out, give and ye shall receive...

docTY~

@ Kivory666

I ordered a Benq 1655 on sunday night and started using it yesterday morning. It's been giving me 92-95% on Sony DVD-R, and 96-97 on Sony TY DVD+R. So far ive seen best results burning at 8X like you said, but not in % wise. Like the 8X would show mainly 96% but where better in PI and PIF even tho burning at 4X gave more of the 2 and gave 97%. But I think it just has to do with the tested speed, I tested at the written speed either 4X or 8X. I havent mest with the default settings, nor have I updated firmware to BCDB.

But my point/question is 1. It smells burnt, but it works fine, should I send it back? // 2. It only gives me the option to burn at 2.4 // 4 and 8X ive noticed, I dont know why.

I appreciate all the help ive gotten from everyone on AD over the past 2-3 months. Thanks Storm~

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

If I update the firmware, and I need to send it back because of the burnt smell, will they still take it back. Second can the results get werse from a firmware upgrade, considering im alrdy getting 95-97% scans.

So should I update the firmware, see if the 8X max write goes away and if the results get even better. But im still in a pickle considering I will probably be sending it back. Has anyone else here gotten a burnt drive, smells burnt but works fine. * I just dont want to update firmware and something to go wrong with the update or the RMA process considering I havent ever RMA'd anything before.

Thanks Storm~

yes they will still take it back

the firmware update wont make it worse

and i havent heard of this problem, make sure theres no plastic stuck inside it or something

Hello, I'm new to posting. Let me say how much I've appreciated this thread and the forums in general. I've had a lot of success backing up movies (using only TY or Verbatim media, of course).

Best Buy has Sony DVD+R 50 packs on sale this week for $15. When I've bought MIJ spindles there in the past, I've gotten TY. I especially like the Sonys because they have a shiny white surface that is good for writing and drawing. Fuji MIJ seems to be extinct in my area (midwest US). I found one on the back of a shelf at Kmart a month ago; otherwise, nada. I'm stocking up in case Sony goes strictly MIT, too.

Well if it's like other Pioneer drives the only way to booktype with the Pioneer would be to cross flash it with hacked Buffalo Firmware. I'm not 100% on this, I'm sure Doc knows the answer.

The only pioneer drives capable of bitsetting/booktyping are the 109 and 110 and they are only capable of doing so with the buffalo f/w. All pioneer drives prior to these are not capable period.

You will see these AML pop up quite a bit in failed Nero logs - if they're not cmc cousins they're certainly a close relative!

Thanx all for input!
Yeah, I already told him/her to "drop'em like they'r hot"! Went ahead and tried some Verbatims and guess what, came back with a succesful burn(miracle?!).
Just because I never heard of them, not even amongst "decent media" was an indicator, but just wanted assurance, as I've never used any.
Mr. DVD!! What kind of name is that anyway?

wow, lot has gone on since i've been gone....hehehe... "Mr.DVD" huh? man, if THAT isn't a friggin generic name for a brand of dvd, i dunno what is? LOL

i don't think i could stop laughing if that company ever introduced a "Mrs. DVD"...that would be the silliest thing in media that i've EVER saw~!

as to everyone else...i'll try not to forget anyone...

@storm

good choice on your new Benq drive, while i personally only use the non-lightscribe capable drives, the 1655 is a genuine benq drive, NOT rebadged by Teac (manufacturer) as the Benq DQ60 is...i would NOT recommend that drive, despite the very cheap price and the dvd-ram capabilities...

as to the drive smelling "burnt", i've read some reports of that occurring before, it was with Benq drives too as a matter of fact, i have 3 Benq drives at this point (they are all dw-1640s) and i'm waiting for the newest dw-1650 soon to be released soon now here in the U.S., but, i don't have a definitive answer for ya unfortunately as to WHY that smells permeates from your drive, despite you saying that it burns/reads/works just fine~ :) none of my drives has ever smelled "burnt," unless i fried them myself~ LOL (incorrect/bad cross-flashing experiment gone awry) hehe...

if you are going to RMA it anyways, it won't hurt to update to newest firmware for your drive, whether it will improve your TY burn scores or not, i dunno since i don't have that particular model Benq...but on Benq drives especially, MY best Nero scan scores are burning TYs @8x, never slower, never faster than the rated speed...overburning (burning faster than rated speed of disc will NOT give you better results, they might be "acceptable", but will NOT be good.) the higher quality drives have this capability, to "overburn" media..i strongly recommend AGAINST doing this, burning a 8x rated TY/Verbatim @ 12x or 16x is asking for it in the long run~ :)

@dagodan

my buddy mort81 hit it right on the nail,
Quote:

that is completely accurate and i couldn't have said it better myself...

yes i do, but mort81 beat me to it as i've been away for a few days on business...keep up the good work buddy~

cheers all, i'll be back in a bit...

Everybody's burner is different as far as media compatibility, firmware upgrades, and burning software. Generally it's a good idea to burn at half the speed of the disc. I never go over 4x on an 8x disc (though I may try sometime soon), but a lot of my burns are PS2 games. I burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R's with movie backups as well. That may not hold for you, but it's a good place to start. I'm giving you the abridged version, Doc will tackle more of the ins and outs. While I'm here, Doc my burner (Sony DRU-810A) can burn Sony Media at twice the rated speed (16x on an 8x DVD-R). I've got enough sense to know that doing so will send my quality scores south for the winter, but how bad would they be? This is sort of one of those annoying hypotheticals, so in short, would I notice a drastic drop off in quality? Thanks for the info. Cheers!

lol,probably 70% of all my burns are PS2 related
one of the burners i'm using is same burner you have(benq DW1640)
try to burn x8 on your x8&x16 media and SEE the resault
i DO NOT think slower is better anymore

hey, just in case anyone is interested, i had made a post a while ago about my TY -r 8x printables coming flawed.. well i emailed supermedia and they gave me a RMA number and i shipped about 23 discs back, just got 25 back today, all with a diferent batch number so i know theyre not the same ones, and they look exactly the same.. some worse some better but i just wantedt to comment on the fact that supermedia took my partial return and sent me replacents asap, so if theres anyone who hasnt done business with them, they have great service and if you ever have problems theres no hassle in returns.. as for my dvds i guess ill just have to live with them..now that ive thought about it, i think its just a fact of it being so tightly packaged in the tapewrap that something transfers from the top of the printables to the bottom of the disc above it, after noticing thta alot of them are slightly stuck together..thats my thought anyway...( so actually the TY's themselves were not flawed but more so in the packaging)

aside from that, ive only gone through about 175 ty 8x but so far, 0 coasters. glad i switched

Those are definitely legit TY's's. They have the GGxxxxx code. Both the unbranded TY's and the MIJ Sony TY's have the GGxxxxx ID on the inner hub.

@ TaiyoUser You've had good success with 16x media on the PS2? I've read that even if burned at 4x, it still causes the PS2 laser some issues. Because of that I always recommend 4x or 8x media for the PS2. I have a Matrix Infinity modchip, so I use TYG02: http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-me... for DVD-5 games and Verbatim DVD+R DL media (booktyped to DVD-ROM) for DVD-9 games.

Damn you supermediastore.com, taunting me with free shipping on the 200 pack of the silver thermals. I've got 110 TYG02's left. It's tempting, but I'll have to wait. I've burned 140+ PS2 games to TYG02 with 0 coasters.
