@Tokijin
yes,i do get good resaults with x16 media(VERBs MCC)
but,you'll have to burn them at x8 speed
what burning program you use?
another thing...the problem i got with the GG000098 was that for all of that media i got bad scans
evrey single media from that pack gave me PIF MAX=5 PIF TOTAL=10 from the begining of the scan(the first few sectors)

I think that's normal to get most of your PIF's at the beginning of the scan. I've read that before, and it seems to be the case with my burner. Again, Doc will elaborate. I use DVD Decrypter and Alcohol 120% to burn my PS2 games. I use Nero to backup movies. I've got great results with the 8x TY DVD-R's, so it'd be pretty difficult to get me to switch. I used Ritek initially, but I had to rebuild a couple games (which shouldn't happen since I have a chip). I switched to Taiyo Yuden and haven't had to rebuild any games since. I've played Dragon Quest 130+ hours and it's still going strong on TYG02. I don't care how often your kiddies watch Barney, that's more time in the DVD player than most movies will ever see. I use the MIT Sony's for movies, I think they're superior to RitekG05. Plus they have the white surface which is great for writing on. Only TY's and Verb's for PS2 games. What do you use to burn your PS2 games?

@Tokijin
i(also) use only TY's and VERB's(MCC) and DDecrypter&Alcohol as burning programs(this is what all PS2 owners should do..hehe)
about the GG000098 media,with other media i DO NOT get those resaults,the problem was only at the begining of the media (the first few MB's on the DVD,the 'rest' of the DVD was burnT as normaly sould)
for me this was bad media,i was doing great with my GG000103
(BTW,PIF MAX=5 is not a good resault anyway,i like scores in the range of 97-99 for the PS2)
we PS2 owners should be exta carefull about media and scan resaults!
try burning your media in x8 speed,emember,it DO NOT start the burn at x8 speed,it starts at x4 then x6 only at around 3GB it swiches to x8 speed(with my NEC's)
now scan your media,see what kind of resaults you get...

Sorry no dice in burning at 8x for PS2 games. I might try it on movies first, then move up to PS2 games if all is well. I don't care about movie quality as much. I still care, just not as much of a perfectionist. Most people I know have had a mixed bag when going above 4x on PS2 games. I've talked to quite a number of people on the subject. I'm content at 4x with PS2 games for now. Glad it works for you though. You get the occasional random noob in the PS2 which is like burn at 16x who cares, I know what I'm doing. Screw all these people who know more than me. Burn at 16x on CMC Mag and you'll be fine. You can never get too many of those. Cheers!

Quote: what are the recommendations for burning speed?
i get poor scan scores using x2,x4 speed on my x8&x16 media
well, i noticed you have the benq 1640 as do i...for THAT particular burner, burn both your 8x and 16x rated media @ 8x~ :)
as to your NECs...i have the OLD model, the 3520a, i still burn my TYs or MCCs @8x too, but i don't use my NEC frequently, it's on my backup computer that my wife uses...
i burn regularly with my Benq 1640 and my Sony dru-710a, i've since moved my Pioneer dvr-109 to my "unfinished AMD dual core setup" that i'm in the process of building right now...
but, for GOOD quality media, ESPECIALLY on Benq drives, DEFINITELY do NOT go under 4x for burn speed, you will get crappy results...i don't burn @16x on my Benq either, i keep it at a stable 8x for MY best results on practically ALL my burners i have...
as to burning PS2 games, i don't own a PS2 so i have never burned a PS2 game in my life, that's where tokijin comes in...i got nothing to say about that topic as i have zero experience in that game...no pun intended :)
Quote: i DO NOT think slower is better anymore
if using a Benq, your quote is DEFINITELY accurate~ on quality media of course :)
as to the irregular scans you received from that "bad batch", i'm guessing that those issues WERE related to a "bad batch" of TYs...it was mentioned earlier in this thread about compiling a list of "good" vs "bad" batch numbers, but i never got around doing it nor do i have the time to start one..but, feel free to contribute and add YOUR own personal experiences with "faulty batches" and "good batches" too~ :)
@tokijin
Quote: While I'm here, Doc my burner (Sony DRU-810A) can burn Sony Media at twice the rated speed (16x on an 8x DVD-R). I've got enough sense to know that doing so will send my quality scores south for the winter, but how bad would they be? This is sort of one of those annoying hypotheticals, so in short, would I notice a drastic drop off in quality? Thanks for the info. Cheers!
as mentioned earlier, that Sony is a rebadged Benq 1640 that i currently use, it WILL overburn media (meaning faster than the rated speed of the discs); however, i would def. suggest AGAINST IT...while i've done quite a few when i was testing out my Benq drive when i first bought it, the scans are "acceptable" depending on who you ask (burning both the TYG02 & the YUDEN000T02 @16x) :) but i use that term "acceptable" VERY loosely, scanning them produced mid to high 80s in Nero cd/dvd-speed testing, while that is UNACCEPTABLE to ME, it WILL play on dvd players with only MINOR pixellation issues...it never froze or skipped, just noticeable pixellation on the 8x rated TYs that i burned @ 16x~ :)
whether that is "drastic" drop in quality to you or not, that's based on what YOU consider "acceptable" or not~ :)

Thanks for the info. I'm not ready to take the leap with PS2 games to 8x yet, but I'll try it with movies. I've got the Daily Show Indecision 2004 ready to burn, so I'll back it up at 8x on the MIT Sony's. I'll let you know how it goes. I'll probably just post a Nero CD/DVD Speed quick scan. I'm not patient enough to wait on the full scan. I've brought this up before, but Doc what is the likelihood of frying my burner if I cross flashed it with BenQ firmware? If I followed the directions precisely, I probably would be okay, right? I'm not asking for a definite answer, I realize you can't give one since it's not your burner. What're your thoughts on the subject? I'm tired of my burner not supporting PI/PO scans. The burn quality is good. It's my only burner, but if anything went wrong, I got it at Wally World. I don't need to mention their return policy. Thanks again for all the info. Cheers!

@tokijin
in YOUR particular case, i would refer to the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" :)
understandably, i see how you could be annoyed in not being able to run certain scans/tests on your burned discs, but is that really worth it to POSSIBLY fry your one and only drive? weigh the pros and cons of each~ :P i know you are very well and capable of following directions precisely, i have NO doubt in that; but, is the juice worth the squeeze?
sleep on it, my personal suggestion to you is, if you are getting excellent burns right now, there is no REAL need to cross-flash it, unless the ability to run certain scan results is THAT important to ya~ :)
i actually saw the Sony dru-810a on clearance at my local best buy the other day when i went shopping for Sony media (YUDEN000T02), but at $60 + CA 8.75% sales tax, i passed on it since i've got my money on Benq's newest drive, the dw-1650, when it's released here in the U.S. within the next few months (i've heard it was planned to be released in March, but who knows?) :P and the going price from what i've seen prior-to-release is LESS than $60, so, i'm going to wait...just a lil bit of info in case you do go about cross-flashing your Sony and something unexpectedly goes awry, not that it would, but you never know...
it's nice to be the 1st on the block w/ new technology, so, at least for me, i've always been the "guinea pig" for new burners on the market, i'm also going to try out Plextor's newest 18x burner when it's released in April of this year~ :) the PX-760A (it's going to be my 1st Plextor btw, i'm looking forward to that one too) :)

Yeah you're probably right. There's not much point cross flashing if my burn quality is solid. PI/PO scans are a benchmark anyway, not some holy grail of DVD Burning. Thanks for your opinion. I reread some old posts from the CMC Mag thread regarding the same subject. Kinda weird seeing Gear79 inactive in all those old posts. Oh well. Cheers!

Yeah I didn't mean to bring up Gear79. If he comes back great, if not, oh well. He's a nice guy, but he's got more important things to worry about than AD, as do we all.
Check out this oppurtunity for a flame war I passed on. What's funny is that if they're MIJ Sony DVD+R's, they're TY's anyway lol. Not coincidentally this person is 14 years old. No offense to any other 14 year olds on this site.
From GregInnes: i dont care what anybody says sony DVD+R ar the best not taiyo yuden discs but they dont work that well for me and they get scratched very easily.No want to know why sony discs are the best for ps2 games cause it plays god of war with no skips what so ever all movies and all that working all cause of a little thing called accucore which is basically a little invention sony made for wide compatibility,stable writing and temperature reability and archive reablility.They all work perfectly.

uh...LOL...gotta love them 14-year olds~ :) LOL
"i don't care what anybody says" blah blah blah...Sony = Sony, not Taiyo Yuden...whatevers, kids these days, will they never learn? all they seem to care about is "brand name" this..."brand name" that...if they would stop and take the time to actually THINK about the process/marketing of dvd media, you would find there is quite a bit MORE to manufacturers/company labels than meets the eye~
oh well, glad you passed on it Tokijin, SOME people are just not worth the time explaining to...been there, done that...no skin off my a$$ :)

I thought spelling was taught in grade school. A 14 year old should be able to spell better than that. Looks like the grammer and sentence structure needs some attention too. I'm not a perfect speller but I know when to use no or know and to, too, and two ya no (oops I mean ya know). ;)

I was looking to buy 8x DVD+R TY's on supermediastore.com and it listed the media id as YUDEN00T02 and in all of your posts you have the media ID listed as YUDEN000T02. Do you think this is just a typo on their website or is it something I should be concerned about?

you have nothing to worry about, the media ID coding can and has been truncated, so, you will get various reports on media ID coding, i just happen to shorten MID coding on the longer ones in either format, ie. TYG02, TYG03, MCC003, MC004...
don't worry, whether or not a "0" is missing from the media ID coding or not, supermediastore definitely sells and ships AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yuden media in both formats~ :)
good luck and happy burning on the YUDEN00T02s/YUDEN000T02s :) either way you look at it, it's still the 8x DVD+R format for Taiyo Yuden~

Yeah it was too easy with that kid. We had a flame war when he first came on AD, I trounced him, so then he started listening to what I had to say. I even worked past his ignorance and tried to help him. Some people just can't be helped. I'm tired of the combative nature of some people, so in the future, I'll look to avoid people like that as much as possible. Cheers!

The 50 TY DVD+R's for $21 is helluva deal. Those should work out great for ya. I use the Silver Thermal Laquer TY DVD-R's. I get mine from http://www.supermediastore.com Hey Doc, are these the Value TY's, or the normal Silver Thermal Lacquer ones?
http://us.st11.yimg.com/store1.yimg.com/I/meritline_1885_68439820
It's the first set of the Silver Thermal Lacquer's he posted, if you can't tell by the picture. $21 for 50 seems like a steal. It's not as a good a deal as the 200 Silver Thermals from sms.com for $69, but it's still a good deal. I broke down and bought a 5 pack of the High Grade Hitachi's at Wally World. They had a new batch of Sony's, but all MIT. :( Maybe I hit the Holy Grail when I found the MIJ Sony TY's.

good luck w/ ur first TY purchase, you will not be disappointed...if you DO encounter problems, let me know, i will PERSONALLY walk you thru it and help you tweak any and all settings to your liking... :)
@tokijin
any TYs that come on a SPINDLE/CAKEBOX are the "regular" TYs, only the tape wrapped spindles are the "value discs"; they have a very distinct manufacturer's number on them, namely, Mfr part #: DVD-R47VAL600SK; not that there is a REAL BIG difference between the two, but the ones that you bought (in a cakebox) are the "good ones" (figurtively speaking) or a better word might be "better/top-grade proven" ones~ :0
i got thousands of the Mfr part #: DVD-R47VAL600SK "value discs", in all different flavors, TYG01/TYG02/TYG03, they've been just fine for me, but if you simply want THE BEST TY media, stick with the ones in the cakebox as you have been doing...those are top-of-the-line-premium media~ :)
