You gurus can answer this question better than I can. From the DOC and others the BenQ seems to have better burns on +R media and the Lite-ons/Pioneers seem to produce better burns on -R media. No real experience here so going by trusted hearsay. I would imagine the difference is almost negligible (1-2 points on the scan at the most?)

@ the gurus, please answer with conviction. lol.

Well I will not exalt myself to the status of Mort and Doc, but from my personal experience, I notice a very negligible difference in quality between TY's in + or -. I prefer +R's for games, but TYG02 is almost as good, on my setup. I played Dragon Quest VIII burned to TYG02 170+ hours and had maybe five skips the entire time. One skip every 30 hours is okay in my book. In fact, hell I'll scan that bad boy, curious to see how it scans after that much abuse. Most DVD movies will never see that much playback.

I'm no guru, but I got myBenQ 1650 in Feb and it burns TY T02s +Rs(book typed to DVD-ROM 8X in 8-9mins) almost flawlessly. I don't put much into scans, but if I can rip the copy to HDD and it plays flawlessly then I take it as a great burn. My LGs are not too shabby at burning either, but all my burns are with the BenQ. Don't own -R discs so I can't comment.

The scan I posted was a -R (TYG02) burned with a BenQ. So IMHO, -R's burn just fine.

This is just from my personal experiences but I've found that my litey's (I've had several models) and benq's (had a couple models) perfomed better with +r media than -r. I've never had a NEC or pioneer but I've read they tend to prefer -r over +r. Don't know either way about LG's or plextor's.

@cincyrob
imho = in my humble opinion :)

Just me but I use both formats - quality wise I don't notice a diff. More -R's cause they're cheaper online.
Use a Pioneer, LiteOn or sometimes a Matshita to burn.

Here's the latest burn I got on a dw1650 using TYG02 (-R) media. It is about the best I am getting now on this media. The scandisc is also totally clean - all green.

Here is my first attempt at posting some scans from older burns. Both are from Maxell DVD-R's 4x TY's and are good by my standards (95). They were burned on a rebadged Pioneer DVR-106D at 4x.

Empire Strikes Back

Revenge of the Sith

I know these are TY DVD-R's but the scans from my Verb DVD+R's were not coming out good at all. They are good burns (play just fine) so I thought posting them would have been misleading. Again the scan issue. lol.

.......c

EDIT: Sorry about the size, I will fix that the next time I post a scan.

Yep just to expand upon the notion scans don't mean anything, here's Dragon Quest VIII after 170+ hours of gameplay.

If that meant anything, the game shouldn't boot at all. It plays perfectly, the surface is just worn from use.

that is true for the MOST part, but doesn't exempt the DVD-R format, i have plenty of Taiyo Yuden DVD-R with scores 95-99, i think that these quality scan scores are just an interesting topic to discuss, but you should use them as a general GUIDELINE of sorts moreso than an ACTUAL conclusion as to whether you got a good burn or not...playback on standalones/PS2 in tokijin's case should be the ultimate test~ :)

from my own experience to add to those of the other members here, Mort81 got it down to the "T" with Benqs "preferring" DVD+R over that of DVD-R, but that doesn't mean very good quality can't be achieved on DVD-R format, it really depends on the media of choice...as i've mentioned in the past, i do NOT really like the MCC produced DVD-R (Verbatims), they inherently score LOWER every single time compared to my Taiyo Yuden or even Hitachi made Maxells in the DVD-R format~ :) does that make them "poor" media, most certainly not...

i can't say much for LG or Plextor drives, only because much like Mort81, i've never used one...i have a slew of different model Liteons, Sonys, Pioneers, Benqs, Necs; but still no LG/Samsung/Plextor/other "brand name" drives at the moment...i CAN say that my Liteons and Pioneers "prefer" the DVD-R format, but then again, that doesn't mean they don't produce very good scores using DVD+R...for example, my highest 99 score on a TYG01/TYG02 has been burned on my Pioneer dvr-109, with a 97 score burned on my Liteons/NECs/Sonys...ironically, my Benqs came in last in this particular small "test" with a 95 score...i have yet to achieve anything over 95 quality score from Nero using a TYG03 (16x rated DVD-R), but that's just me... :)

much like my sentiments regarding digitalfaq and their "media guide," i take these cd-dvd speed scans on Nero or kprobe or dvdinfopro to be just a general GUIDELINE, nothing more than giving you a good general idea of the quality of your backups...the world is not gonna end just because you couldn't break a 90 score on these quality scans, it's to be taken with the proverbial "grain of salt" :)

anyways, it's good to see so many scans on here, i'll state it again that Pioneer drives are some of the WORST/MOST INACCURATE scanning drives possible, my own dvr-109 is testament to that...but as in your case greensman, where you got some pretty outstanding scores on those TYG01s, just think, they might even scan HIGHER on a Liteon/Benq drive~ :) those are some very good scores for TYG01s under the Maxell MIJ 4x DVD-R branding :P

@windtrade

that TYG02 is decent, perhaps you are a bit more scrutinizing than i am with these scans...i feel bad for you that you've only just recently been encountering what you feel may be a "bad batch" with nothing else on your setup changed...from time to time, i go as far as a fresh install of my OS and i reflash my drives with proper firmware again if i feel my backups are going downhill consistently, i know that is extreme and obviously takes a bit of time to do, but it has been an option that has worked for me when i felt things were "up to par" in the burning dept. :) just a suggestion for future reference...

as to CCE/Procoder, i too notice the time difference between the two and with marginal difference in output quality, i think i will stick w/ CCE much like mort81 and you suggested, it takes my system about 110 min. or less depending on how big the original file is, i'm planning on breaking the 1 hour total encode mark once i get my new system built and OC'ed properly~ :) but that is a different project all together...

@gurnard - why a 92 score? It seems very low considering how few errors you have, even though the disc is not full.

I know we are supposed to stick to the relevant topic, but you guys are so helpful and I don't know where else to go, so I would appreciate your helping me out. Someone sent me a PAL format movie from England and it will not play in my panasonic player/recorder. I tried making a backup copy using AnyDVD and Clone DVD, but it just copied another PAL format. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can convert from PAL to our region? Thanks for your help and tolerance.

You can use IFOEdit and the "patch" method.

Chris: Sorry for the multiple appeals. I wasn't certain which to use so I used both. I fiddled with Nero, but didn't have any success. I guess my skills just aren't up to par. I will work on it again tomorrow as well as try that other website. Thanks for your help

frbernard, no need to aplogize my friend, I have been following this thread and learned more about many things from the beginning and will say even many of the hard core veterens here have gone of topic every once in a while, long as you ask your question you will be guided were to go and often they will help you even further without telling you to get off, this thread has dealt with many intersting topics besides just media alone, e.g. the last couple of pages the vets have been talking about the best burners out there and so on, as long as you are a gentleman and dont continue to stay of topic constantly you are doing fine, don't let anybody get you down or scare you away, this is the smartest and the most informative about many subjects thread at AD by far.

@ windtrade hi :)
i have no idea why it's so low
have'nt managed over 95% yet. perhaps my Lite-On 1693s does'nt like to scan
don't hold to much stock in scans. i did a little test on another forum i belong to, on an 18 mth old disc that was burned right to the edge and has a sticky label on it. quality score zero. it played all the way through without a glitch and it copied fine
burn and play thats me.

yup, my testing/general burning practice, in order of importance is..
a) burn and play - primary test, frequently done.
b) recopy backups - a very good secondary indication of problems or not. also frequently done.
c) i only do this if problems/or i've upgraded dvd burner and or burning software - start CRC scanning and try to isolate problem(s) from there.

Quality scanning for me is a token effort, and only really done if option c above is necessary

@cincyrob - too funny! I just searched this morning for another new drive, same as you. I ended up with this one at newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106019

I saw the one you selected at Newegg but it shows out of stock this morning and has no lightscribe capability.

As I just bought a new Benq 1650 (no lightscribe) a couple of weeks ago, I paid up a couple buck for one that has lightscribe even though I don't really need it now.

Last night I finally discovered a big source of the problems I have been having for some time. The DVD-ROM drive in my HTPC, that plays all the backups, is going bad. I did some rigorous testing of a disc that burned fine in the 1650, scanned back fine in the 1650, played fine in another PC with a Pioneer DVR-105, and then failed miserably on the drive in the HTPC.

MOre precisely, the media from the good batch of TYG02 burned on the 1650 and plays ok on the HTPC. The batch of TYG02 that I know has quality issues, still burns ok but fails to play on the HTPC. And the original DVDs, even if they seemed a bit sratched up, seem to play OK in the HTPC.

One other test I did not run was to go back to the start of all the problems and burn a marginal TYG02 on the Pioneer burner then play it in the HTPC with the old Pioneer DVD-ROM drive.

I 'll do some comparisons between the new Lite-On and the BenQ to see which seems to deliver better burns and place that drive in my main PC.

I'm feeling good to see pat the worst of all the problems but what a huge waste of time and energy.

cincyrob , that HP burner is probably NOT made by HP. is it rebadged?

i would stay away from tiger direct, and do you need LightScribe?

i would stick with newegg.com also
