@CincyRob,
are you sure your burner isn't pining for the Boston Massacre this past weekend? Mine refuses to touch anything that has either New or York or Yankmees in the title. Did the same thing last year as well, must be seasonal. I ran a couple those skin flicks thru it last year to cheer it up, made it feel better. Just a suggestion.

@biggoltee: As aabbccdd said, +R might be your best bet. It's all I use for backups, movie or PS2, and they work without a hitch. I burn at the max rated speed or 12x, whichever is lower.

V7 PS2's should read DVD+R/-R equally well. Try getting some 8x Taiyo Yuden's or Verb's. If -R is failing the +R advice is a good idea, TY or Verb's are excellent.

If anyone still looking for a good drive, Newegg has this Lite-On for $31 shipped.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827106019
My own problems are finally sorted and nearly resolved. It turned out to be a combination of media and hardware problems. The Pioneer DVD-103 DVD_ROM drive in the HTPC turned out to be shot. I pulled it and forgot how old it was - April 1999! At the end it would only read excellent media burned by my other Pioneer burner. It would not read the same media burned by a new BenQ or Lite-On drive. And forget trying to play marginal media.
The Pioneer burner that I originally thought was the source of the problem seems to still burn decent quality as reported by various scans and disc quality tests.
The new Benq 1650 I purchased from Newegg turned out to be defective, as it could not even read good media discs it wrote itself. Since I had one good and one bad drive to test on I got confusing results that slowed getting to the root cause of my problems.
I ordered another new drive: Lite-On 165H6S and now two drives read the media fine with no bad sectors. That finally pointed out the second problem was the new Benq drive could write ok but had defective reading. I RMA'd it back to Newegg but were out of the 1650, so I found on sale the 165H6S and ordered that one.
As to media, same mantra holds - use the best media you can buy! What started this whole saga for me was a tub of poor, substandard quality TYG02.

I've been looking to get one of the Benqs from New Egg.
Is that Lite-On the $30 one from Tiger direct or wherever?

Whoops, didn't see the link at the top of the thread.
Anyways give us a word on the performance of that one
if it's not too off topic. ;-)

I've got one of those litey drives and it has performed very well. Burns every bit as good as my benq 1650 although it doesn't rip quite as fast. I would recommend it.

windtrade, you might remember I ordered my ty2's the same time you did, 200 pack, after I got them my first burn failed, after reading your post I really got paranoid cause my last 200 I never got a coaster, anyway, with this 200 batch so far I've had 9 coasters after 98 burns, but I'm not gonna complain about 9 out of 98, my main worry is that I'm hoping that all my good burns are not burned on faulty ty's even tough burned succesfully meaning somewhere down the line they might not last as long etc. cause of course there is no way to tell as of now, but so far so good I guess.

Has anyone been able to find a BenQ 1650 lately? I can find a new 1670. Is it as good as the 1650? I just want a spare 1650. May settle for 1655 since I can find them. Newegg.com has no mention of any BenQ drives now.

garmoon,
As stated by aabbccdd the 1670 does not use the phillips/benq chipset like the 1620, 1640, 1650, and 1655. I can't remember who makes the chipset for the 1670 right now and the web page that tells me is not working right right now. I would avoid the 1670 and you would be money ahead going with the litey SHM-165H6S intead which is on sale at newegg for $31 shipped.

If I may ask, where is everyone getting the information about which brands are labeled as made from a different manufacturer.
I know BenQ make some HP's, some Lite-ons, some Sony.
ANd Mort81 said "litey SHM-165H6S" and besides the fact that Litey's 165base number looks familiar how would I know for sure what is what?

@all,
Thanks for the advice on using different internet computer parts suppliers. I have used Newegg.com since my last post and they were as you told me. Quote: reputable, you will be happy, fast, good customer service, etc.
On the other hand I was one of the lucky ones with Tiger and received my stuff in 4 days or less (2 boxes) and every thing was as expected. Got the new puter up and running and I love it. Even though I was happy with the service from Tiger I like Newegg a little better because of their terrific reputation. Thanks again for all the input.
@Mort81,
Thanks for all the advice on flashing/cross-flashing my Memorex/Litey drive. Ended up just flashing it to an official Litey and it seems to be working better than ever. Memorex 16+/-DL4RW1D2 to Lite-on SOHW-1673S with f/w ver JSOD.
@Tokijin,
Thanks for offering what you could on the GameCube stuff. I found some other info on a GameCube forum that indicates a sinc problem or a bad image. I may get a PS2 in the next few months so be prepared for some crazy questions. lol.
Now to the real reason for the post. Some more scans. I have some interesting results (at least to me). Scored on a BenQ DW-1655 and written on a Samsung SH-D182D. I like the Samsung but the BenQ doesn't seem to be operating a peak performance, I may have to do a f/w update.
This is a TYG03 burned at 8x with a score of 97 :).
and the stats for the TYG03
A FUJIFILM03 with a score of 92 (not to bad)
and the stats for the FUJIFILM03
The actual original disc (strait out of the package) with a score of 96
and the stats for the Original
The score on the original was interesting for me because it may explain some of the lower scores I (we) have been getting on the recorded media. Is this a possibility or just an anomaly? For one thing it shows the quality difference between the TYG03 and the FUJIFILM03 even though the scores weren't to far apart. btw who makes the FUJIFILM03? I know I saw it somewhere but can't find it now.

How'd you score a 92 with over 14,000 PIFs? Jezzz....I score 95s with only 80 PIFs. How the hell do those scans calculate their scores?

The quality score is based on the maximum number PIF's not the total.
greensman,
That media is actually made by fujifilm. Some fuji media is made by ty or prodisc.

Joshewah , dont put alot of faith in thoses scans .the playback is whats most important. use good media (Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim) and burning at 8x max.
