ChrisC586: I am afraid that I am pretty incompetent in knowing what to do. I have learned that PAL is not a regional difference but a difference of format. That doesn't tell me whaat to do. Slysoft told me to search the various internet forums. I have both Shrink and Nero, which I have never used as I use Any DVD and Clone DVD, which work well for me. I have no knowledge of how to get around in Nero, much less solve this PAL problem. Any help you can give will be appreciated. I didn't take your remarks as sarcastic at all, just giving me protocol that I didn't know. Fr Bernard

@frbernard - 'fraid i had to remove your email address; if you've got a Nero problem you could start a thread in the Nero forum. as to DVD regions, i set DVD Shrink to make ALL my disks region-free or region-less, (i'm in UK )and never have issue with doing that. Sorry, haven't re-read the last couple pages so remind myself what your problem was, it's very late and i'm rebuilding one of my PC's

Greensman,

As long as the current f/w for your memorex drive is recognizing and working ok with 16x rated media, I would leave it alone. In some cases memorex doesn't update their f/w as well as the oem manufacturer of the drive and they have problems with new and 16x rated media, in which case it would be beneficial to crossflash it to the oem f/w, in this case with lite-on SOHW-1673S f/w.

@Mort81,
Thanks for the reply. Where do I go to learn how to do this w/o frying my drive? Not saying I will do it, I just want to do it right if I do. I would like to get higher quality burns with my drive too. As you mentioned Memorex doesn't keep up with their f/w as they should, thus the reason I want to make it an official Lite-on. I'm not having that much trouble burning movies just lower quality burns on my GameCube backups.

@Tokijin you might interject here if you mess with GameCube at all. I am using the mini DVD-R Ritek Ridatas, which is the most prefered disc by the GameCube forum I visit.

@docTY,
Does TY make a mini DVD-R? Man I know that would help my problem, maybe even solve them. lol.

@all,
Thanks for the advice and help.

creaky: My films are from England (I used to be on the staff at Coventry Cathedral)and it is not a region problem, I am told, but a format problem. PAL is a format not a region and it is used mostly in England from what I understand. I was told I could do it with Nero, but not how to do it.

@Fred Rather than worrying about recoding, it's probably easier to get a Dual Format DVD player. You can get a decent dual format player for $30 or $40. Mine's $40 and handles anything I throw at it, regardless of media or region.

@Greensman I don't have any firsthand experience with backing up GameCube games. It's possible that it's finnicky with certain brands of media. However, 8x Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's in either format have worked flawlessy for me on PS2/Xbox. I don't think the GameCube is a special case. If the console forums on that site are like the ones here, take their media advice with a grain of salt. That's not to put anyone on that site down, it's certainly possible the GC likes Ridata discs. However, I'd be surprised if didn't work equally with 8x TY's and Verb's. -R's are usually a safer bet with an unknown game console, from my experience. It's well documented older PS2's and DVD drives for Xbox will not read +R's, even booked to DVD-ROM.

re Tigerdirect - I would not buy anything from them again. My several experiences were not very good. The best one was their "instant rebate". What a scam. I did finally get it but it came out to avbout 10 cents/hour for the time I had to chase them down. They also see like a specialist as a big liquidator of factory seconds, returns, refurbs.

re Newegg - great store and like DocTY I was always very happy with the time to deliver, being Ca based. Until I just got that Benq 1650 that was shipped from New Jersey! No suprise it took a few more days to arrive via ground. Good news from the East Coasters though.

re posted scans - I feel a lot better seeing a lot more posted scans that are not "perfect". A couple recent scans of mine show signficant improvements. The media is from the first "bad" batch GG000077 that started all the problems. Now they are giving me the best scan results.

Honestly, why do we put any time, energy, or faith in this scanning ritual when we can not even get two scans of the same disc on the same hardware to give the same results? So, we retry it a few times to get "good" results.

I beginning to suspect everyone in this room has a permanent cell at their respective State's home for the certifiably mentally ill. I know where I am housed. :-)

Latest results: lol -

Just scored 2 bundles of the Sony TY T02 +Rs (25+50 bundles)at Sams ($25+). Never thought I'd see those jewels again! I also got a package of 400 4X6 photo paper from Royal Brites ($17+), twice as much as Kodak at Sams. Has anyone used this brand of paper (professional high gloss photo paper)? Keep checking your Sams for the Sonys they come and go.

Does anyone know of any special external indication that these are TY T02, other than "Made in Taiwan?"

thx

greensman,

Here's a link to some lite-on f/w that I'm pretty sure will work with your drive http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html Any of these should work.

? KS0B - patched - crossflashing (for 1673S, etc.)
? KS0B - patched - crossflashing - fast burn FBD/FBDX (for 1673S, etc.)
? KC4B - patched - improved +/-R burn quality (for 1673S, 1693S, Sony 800A, etc.)

Note: do so at your own risk. I would start with the first one and if all goes ok try the others.

I answered windtrade in a pm after he pmed me. Just want to clear up the comment he made in asking his question in this thread. The Sony TY T02s are NOT made in Taiwan but Japan. They have WHITE octagonal spacer on top.

@cincyrob

> I thought the same thing - bad burner and bad media. Got new dw1650 - still getting questionable scans and no great ones.

> Last night I created a new, stripped down, Win XP partition, installed Nero software, and made a burn. Same results.

> New Lite-On burner arrives tomorrow - it will be interesting to compare the burns it produces.

> FYI - Newegg shows in stock on the DW1650.

Happy Bday cincyrob

Get a good burner for the bday :)

The whole blu ray/ hd dvd - a bit too rich for me. Now maybe if I hit the lottery - lol.

I've seen the printable verb dl cheaper at newegg - just can remember the price. Next time they have a decent deal on them I will probably buy some.

you won't get the 4x speed anymore there off the market . you will get either the 8x or 16x in the valueline. thats the latest firmware for that drive right? if not update the firmware. sounds like the TYs are ok but you need to invest in a better dvd player

Here's a place that has the BenQ DW1650 in stock.

I've bought from them and they are a good place to buy from.
