Quote: So I think it's just a combo of you being hypersensitive and using -R's, perhaps even a bad batch of TY's. Either way, try some +R's.
I just picked up pack of Fuji DVD+R, Made in Taiwan, that code out as follows:

What's the consensus on these - thumbs up or down?
All the Sony packs I found were also from Taiwan; did not see any MIJ packs. That was at Best Buy and Office Depot today.
EDIT - Did a scan of the recent posts here and it seems I got crap media. Oh well - Best Buy says they will take them back within 30 days. I'll burn a few just for grins to see how they perform.

Yeah I'm always in favor of using good media, but if you get great playback on Prodisc, so be it. Most newer DVD players will play whatever you throw at them. Game systems are uber picky, so that's a different story. I still use good DVD's for movie/data backups, but sometimes your burner/player just doesn't like the good stuff.

@herrick
Sorry missed the sig.
Both of your drive's are made by Liteon - so you are good there on Nero supporting the scanning.
To try and explain the scan results on my limited knowledge on them- I look at the quality score - 90 and above is good (think 90 is a good baseline # for quality score)
The PI errors should be <280 and the PI failures should be <4.
The more 'colorful' scans usually have low quality scores and high PI errors & failures.
Doesn't always mean they will have playback problems - I posted a 'bad' one a page or 2 back burned 2 years ago that plays fine and I can still rip that disc to my hard drive.
Post a pic of one when you get home.
Here's an illustration - a Verb I burned one the LiteOn I just got. Still can't break the 95 score.
@windtrade
I haven't used Prodisc made media in about 2 years - they were hit or miss then for me - they may have improved since then.
What kind of score are you getting on the scan?

Tokijin, another option on getting the Verbatim is "Sam's Club" if you have one in your area, they run about that price everyday

Looks like that Plextor 716SA may be gone before I can get one. No longer making that one?
Any experience or feedback on the newer PX-760SA? Liking the 18x -/+R burn speed and the 10x for the +R DL.

more scanning info for anyone that wants it - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193298, though my personal recommendation is do a few scans to see what your burner is making of the discs (bear in mind that tweaks might be needed to burning setup), then if you ever have the need to verify data on the discs, do this via CRC scanning the discs. Another good test (useful if you're recopying from backups anyway) is the recopying process, this will work or it won't (i still prefer CRC scanning as an actual test, i just happen to do quite a bit of recopying anyway so don't need to do hardly any CRC scanning). Quality scans look very nice and everything but i'm much more concerned with data integrity (but i concede i only use top notch media and keep my burning setup tip-top so the only time i need to worry about anything is when i wear a burner out or the burner's not as decent as it might be)

@creaky,
I have searched for CRC Scanning on this website, other websites, and I even Googled it but have not found a decent discription of what it is. Is there a program that runs this particluar test or am I making this out to be more than it is? I read your thread from a year ago and you were using Kprobe for scanning but it is no more than a different way to check PI/PO errors, right?(i dl it anyway...lol) Showing my lack of smarts in this area. I was wanting another way to check for errors on some of my older burns and it looks like you and others put some stock into this scanning/testing method so I wanted to try it. Thanks in advance for your advice.

trying to think what progs i use for CRC scanning now, haven't had to do it for ages :)
(CRC = Cyclic Redundancy Check by the way)
...let's see - dvdinfopro (free version with adverts from www.dvdinfopro.com (think the free one on their site is dated july so have to wait 'til they put another free one on there).
also Nero's cd-dvd speed. soz it's been months since i've CRC scanned :)

I think I remember people awhile back saying Yuden000T03's were available under the Sony label. I know people were able to get them locally in some places, I'm just not 100% it was under the Sony label. I don't have any confirmed reports of the octogonal spacer trick working with Yuden000T03's, however every 50 pack of Sony 16x +R's I've seen locally has a circular spacer and is made in Taiwan. I have a feeling that the octogonal spacer will denote TY's, like it does with 8x +R's and 8, 16x -R's. Obviously you'll still want to check to see if it's MIJ or not.

I think you're right aabbccdd, I just hesitate to say all or never when possible. Too many wiseheimers will post just because you made a mistake or a typo.
@Rob Dunno much about HP burners. I have a HP printer that's great, but obviously that means nothing. I know HP Media blows, surefire way to get CMC Mag. It seems that most people who burn frequently use BenQ, Litey, Plextor, Pioneer, or NEC. I don't think a single burn guru I know uses a HP as their primary drive. Doesn't neccessarily mean anything, but it does make you think.

If you get the BenQ 1655, be sure to DL the QSuite for the burner. Best prices I've seen for benQs is newegg.com. I got my 1650 there first of year never looked back. Not a coaster yet on TYs. And it HATES Fujifilm DLs. Will not burn any of the 3 I was given. Loves DL Verbs. AND the BenQ will do quality scans than my LGs would not.

QSuite doesn't come with it (that I'm aware of), but you can download it from several places. It's free, a very nice utility. To maximize your success with your new burner, make sure Solidburn is enabled. That will "learn" the media, and should improve burn quality. Truth be told, I've never noticed a drastic improvement with SolidBurn enabled. I'll document this more closely when I get my MCC003's Thursday.

Never fret -R with the BenQ (Plextor PX 740 UF flashed to EW 164B: external version of DW 1640). TYG02 burned at 8X, SolidBurn enabled, WOPC disabled, Overspeed disabled.

hi all~ :)
juss thought i'd drop in for a bit and catch up with any PRESSING issues concerning TYs~
@Jondrew
Quote: 16x Sony DVD+Rs were TY made. I would like to know if you found anything else about that situation.
so far, even till today, i have YET TO SEE ANYONE report YUDEN000T03s on the Sony brand 16x DVD+R, regardless of MIJ or not...i know people out there have been scouring Best Buy and Staples and all the other local B&M stores for the octagonal white spacer with the MIJ label on Sony 16x DVD+R media, but with no luck...until someone shows me PROOF that Sony entrusted Taiyo Yuden to produce their MIJ 16x DVD+R media, i will say that they are NOT available (at least not locally for me and seemingly LOTs of other members here around the U.S.) :)
Taiyo Yuden has been hesitant to inform me about their OEM distribution to various "brands" of media, so i can't get a definitive answer as to WHICH brands do in fact outsource their production to TY...i guess it's a matter of "trial and error" based on who reports WHICH particular MID coding based on their own purchases of whichever "brand" of media locally...
@teflonmyk
i know u were anxiously waiting for the TY DLs, but, unfortunately, TY does not have them in the United States yet, so they couldn't send any to me to pass on to you :(
the media markets are different around the world, those in Europe and Australia can get TY media that we here in the States STILL can not get readily (ie. creaky's Sexy Verb TYs w/ the YUDEN000T03 coding), this is also the case for the DLs at this point, i will def. let you know if i do get some in, you are at the top of my list when they arrive...no worries...
@binkie7
my portion of your "project" is almost complete, i apologize for the delay, work has been extremely busy the last few weeks and i just didn't have the free time to work on it...i should be sending you a "rough draft" by the end of the week~ :)
also, regarding your Verb DVD-R burn, from MY OWN experience, i do not rate the Verb DVD-R format as highly as the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R, but that's just me...i have consistently gotten lower scores on MCC produced DVD-R than i have from the TYG01/TYG02/TYG03 dvd-rs :) i find the MCC003/MCC004 to be "much better" than their DVD-R counterparts burned on my Benqs/Pioneers/Sonys/Liteons...
when it comes to DVD-R format, i almost SOLELY use Taiyo Yuden and burn them on my Pioneer dvr-109, with a few MIJ Hitachi made Maxell MXLRG03 thrown in there that are very good (which for ME, seems to produce better burns on DVD-R than my Benqs) :) my own Liteons also have better quality scores on TYs and Maxells DVD-R than the Verbatim MCC dvd-rs too...i'm NOT saying that Verbatim MCC DVD-R media is POOR, but from my own tests, the Taiyo Yuden and Hitachi made Maxells are "better" :)
@windtrade
i've used a few Prodisc in the past as well, while i find them slightly better than the "fujifilm03" MID coded ones, they are still not what i would consider "good" media~ :) but a lot of people have varying degrees of success with Prodisc media, i would take those anyday over CMC MAG media if you ask me for a personal opinion :)
@all
thanks for all the contributions and advice lately, i've only responded to the last page of posters here, if there are other pressing questions i missed or were not resolved by others, post the question again directed @docTY and i will get to them...

Thanks for keeping me mind concerning the TY DLs.... It's okay, though. DVDRebuilder Pro w/CCE yields fantastic enough results for DLs not to be a "burning" issue (pun intended).
