Doc, although I feel that procoder 2 yields the best results, I still primarily use CCE due to the fact that it is faster and the over all result differences are very minimal. I will use procoder 2 for very large folders (7.5 gb and over) but CCE for everything else. Just my personal preferance of course.

cincyrob, theres a very good chance the Verbatim media WILL work in your standalone player when you get that new BenQ. let us know

blivetNC ,remember you could always get the Taiyo Yudens online ,takes the guess work out of it plus no gas running all over town trying to find TY.

Great to seeya Kivory666 glad you stopped by were trying to hold the fort down but its hard without ya lol

I take from your nic - you're on the mid atlantic area. Seems anything in stores around the mid atlantic is hard to find. I'm up 'north' from you - same here and I am no shopper - in & out normally. But I will run to like Best buy (hell it's 3 mins from my office) and check for a sec.
None - leave - very little gas gone.

Now if I happen to find an mij +R = grab. But geting harder & hard to find.
Better off buying online - I've checked the prices on both ( talkng -R when buying online -R cheaper than +R online usually) and they are very close on the total cost comparasion instore - no real diff at all.
I do buy all my printables online - cauese can't find the brands I want here at all.

editted add: Doc no wrries - master pieces aren't created overnite :)
Nice to see ya post too :)

Truth be told, I've never noticed a drastic improvement with SolidBurn enabled.
Ditto. I've been tracking my cd-dvd speed scan results pretty carefully. So far, the improvement is minimal, if that. There is far more variability from different media, burn and scan speeds. If I begin to detect a true trend, I'll post an update.

RE: Prodisc - so far, they are proving to be very similar to the pile of TYG02 that I have been burning. The MID is R05.8, so maybe things have improved over the older Rx MID batches. That said, I am still concerned about the quality of the current tubs of TY that I have. I ran some scans on some older burned media and all the results seem to be in the same ballpark.

@teflonmyk and dolphin2 - When I see posted scans like the ones you posted, I just scratch my head as I have never gotten close to those results, even using same MID media and hardware drive.

for me now, the dilemna comes down to using CCE or Procoder, LOL...big dilemna huh?
@kivory666 - It actually is a no-brainer if you consider it from a price-performance ratio. The actual peformance difference is quite small and likely not even noticable unless watching on a large 2 meter + screen or under extremely detailed analysis. The encoding time difference is not significant. I get Procoder (master quality) to average about 200 minutes while CCE saves about 30 minutes. With CCE a bit faster and several hundred dollars cheaper, I don't how one justifies going with Procoder2. Either one, in the hands of an experienced encoder using various filters and tweaking the many parameters, will get far better results than anything the bumbling masses (me included) will ever attain. :-)

LOL @ windtrade

I know that I have blown a wad since I started tinkering with back-ups a little over a year ago. I have 4 external burners, 2 laptops, CCE, Procoder2, Nero, Alcohol 120%, ONES (Prassi), R200 printer for printable discs, HP 2600N color LaserJet for DVD covers, AnyDVD, CloneDVD2, and DVDRebuilder Pro. My latest project is to create spanning spines that will read Action, Comedy, etc across all 5 shelves in the respective bookcases that the dvds are in by genre. That means an Adobe Photoshop purchase is in order... I don't know whether to laugh or cry about that!

EDIT: clarity. Still don't know if I explained the spanning spines clearly...

@Binkie and Cincyrob,
Actually, most of my purchases for media are online, (SMS seems to know when I need something and sends me a juicy E-mail offer to entice me to get more disks) just when shopping for the wife or running around in various stores I will scout out the electronics department and take a look at what is available. Kinda snooping around for the good stuff. I will pick up a package of MIJ when I do see it. Spent 13 years in Ellicott City Binkie, not sure if that is near your neck of the woods. Now live near Charlotte. Housing prices are 1/3 of what they are in Howard County now.

Try cranking the speed up to at least 8X or 12X on those Verb 16X+R. I think you'll be pleased with the results....

I think I know what you are doing and came across a program/site that allows you to create a graphical display of a shelf of DVD, showing their splines. You then click on the spine and up pops movie details. I don't think it actually loaded it up from a HD or carosel (sp?) and played it. Off hand, I don't remember where I saw this but I'll try to recall it from the grey mass.

@cincyrob - bummer dude! Maybe my bad run of luck has rubbed off to you. It is really frustrating to to seek out the "best media - Sony MIJ, MCC, Verb, etc. " and have it all seem like a big waste of time when you get crap results.

I had a lot of media trouble early on but about three years ago I latched onto Ritek, Ridata, and then TY media and had great luck. This recent bout of REALLY bad experiences has me back in the boiling pot again.

Frankly, I am getting to the end of my rope and going to forget all about this scanning drill and just go back to the basic read scans. The last set of scans using the same system, same software, same burned disc, and same everything are giving me increasingly inconsistent results.

I'm about done -- If I see all GREEN, I'm GOOD TO GO. That's it.

I second what teflonmyk posted, If your scans and playback don't improve, send those discs back. That's terrible. I don't think I have ever seen a verb scan that bad.

cincyrob,

Let me get this straight. Your dvdrw drive is a HP 740b, you do not have a benq 1650, Ken did those scans for you using his benq 1650, those discs were not burned on a benq 1650. Is this correct.

Try burning those 16x verbs at 8x and make sure your f/w is current. Think seriously about getting a benq 1650 (if you don't have one) or other quality drive, eg. lite-on.

My 16x +r Verbs on the benq or the Plextor require 8x to 12x for good burns [ 6x for printable 8x up to 12x for standard I don't know why the difference on the printable but thats how my set ups run] .My 4x were terrible scans .On the Tys I think they'll take anything you throw at them and the Sony 16x mij I had to bring the target size way down great for the kids videos since I bought a 100 of them cheap but no more trying to cut corners. Ole Doc Ty sure doesn't lead anybody astray and I've missed his posting also. Chris

Instead of Photoshop, take a look at Gimp for Windows. It's free!

Don't dump those verbs untill you try some 8x and 12x burns and also a different burner.

Clearly the baseball references missed the Pirates, the picture of consistency in the National League. That's right, could be 15th straight year of finishing below .500, tying the expansion Mariners for the all time record. Well, always have SB Champs.

Anyway, like we've been saying all along, going nuts with scans is really futile. If a scan looks great and plays horribly, what good is that? The opposite holds as well. It's okay for reference purposes, beyond that, PI/PO scans are about as accurate as the local weatherman.

@cincyrob,

I have to agree with all the other guys saying, "Get a new burner". Those Verbs are top notch and I have never had a problem with them. I will add one thing though, they score consistantly lower than the TY's, 92-97 (verbs) compared to 94-98 with the TY's. Not trying to suck up to the DOC but he does recommend the best. lol. I have a rebadged Lite-on SOHW-1673S (for -R's) and I have a BenQ DW-1655 (for +R's) on the way. I thought I might try the LIGHTSCRIBE thing a few times so WTH. I am also looking forward to scanning with the BenQ to check out the quality it gives me on a burn. I know I (we) shouldn't put much stock in these scans but they obviously mean something or we all wouldn't be talking about them. lol.

How bout them Rangers! (Oh wait, it is the second half of the season, lol. At least they are over .500 ball for now.)
