binkie7 , all my quality scores end up being 93 every time lol so i don't put alot of faith in them. i use Taiyo Yuden media and Plextor PX-716As to burn. so i believe thats a pretty good combo lol

Windtrade, don't obsess over quality scores too much, how is the playback on those TYG02's?
I've been burning DVD for 4-5 years and never got overly concerned about media. Only when a disc would have a tough on playback would I get "shook up" as I then wonder how many other recent backups I've NOT played could be hosed as well.

The reason I'm in this situation, a new experience for me, is that I am getting a lot of marginal burns. That defined as discs that stutter or choke up on playback. I've got more coaster during the past month or two than I had during the prior 4 years. I just took a handful of bad burns and threw them in the bin.

Thanks for all the feedback on burn speed. I'll run a few more tests: 4x and 8x burns, same drive, same media, and see what kind of scan results I get.

Until I get this mess sorted out, I am just doing full scans on every burn to make sure they are all solidly readable.

Neither do I - burned on a Pioneer - scanned on a LiteOn (cause Pioneer scanning sucks imo ) and mine come out 95 almost always :)
Now just got a new LiteOn today so I'll see if that makes a diff in the score.

A bit early to say that. He hasn't tried other media, burn software, or firmware that we know of. Maybe your current firmware doesn't mesh with DVD-R's. Mort's advice about DVD+R's is solid, my 1640 loves Yuden000T02. Try out some Verb or TY +R's and see if that makes a difference.

The playback problem - is it in the PC,standalone or both? If standalone only try it in the PC and see if there are any issues there.
Try & rule everything out.

binkie,

In regards to that ritek scan, I know you said it plays ok but another thing to consider is it was scanned with a pioneer drive and you know their reputation as far as scan results. On a side note and this is just my opinion and based on my experiences, I have never cared for G04 media even though a lot of folks swore by them. Now the ritek R03's are another story. Never had any problems with them whatsoever except those I put paper labels on long ago.

You should be happy with your new litey. They have never let me down. My 165H6S has performed like a champ although it usully takes second chair to my benq and seldom gets used. What model did you get and what made you go with a litey rather than a benq? I'm just curious.

Yes this one was Pioneer scan - I also did a LiteOn scan and I think it came in about the same which I thought was weird & rare. Pioneers are usually much lower.
Now the GO4 I was still progressing up the dvd media chain at that time :) Media chain started w/ wow look how cheap they are!!! What a deal on EBay - lol
Tipped me over the edge was the GO5 right into Taiyo's lap :)

I got the SHW160P6 Z($33 from newegg) - the older Litey I have now it's like a Timex - reason I went with another one. Plus the older one is still good and going in another pc. Not one issue and easily over 1k burns and still kicking :)

One day soon I plan on replacing the Pioneer w/ a sata Plextor. But budget (eck!) stopped me this time.

It is a brand new dw 1650. That is the frustrating part. New drive, new batch of media (premium TY).

I know many of you burn on +R rather than -R; I may have to resort to buying a tub of Verb +R to test them out. The old Pioneer loved those TY, I just don't feel the 1650 should be having media problems with TY -R since so many of you find this combo working well.

I have been doing all tests on two PCs. One is the primary burn and test PC, the other is a HTPC that is a read-only. Nothing has changed in either configuration except for the new 1650.

After I finish running this batch of tests, I'll probably go get some +R media as suggested just to see what the scans show.

windtrade, sorry i didnt read your first post my bad

couple things you can try , first make sure your running the lastest firmware for the drive. second try the Verbatim media as said burning at 4x and 8x both. and see what happens if your still having trouble i would return the drive an exchange it and go again.

only other thing i could thing of is making sure your system is clean (disc cleanup and defragging). and making sure you dont have a virus or spyware problem. shut down other programs running while your burning too. hope you get it worked out let us know

'fraid i can't comment on whether dash or plus media is better food for the Benq's, as i just feed it the first disc to hand - i've got so many tubs of varieties of TY and Verbatim in both formats, i no longer look or care what goes in the burners as media is something i don't have to concern myself with either (and quite rightly so as i only use top notch stuff). As to burn speed i am also a an 8x convert, for quite some time now, and i'm a very frequent user of the 'multiple recorders' feature of Nero (6.6.0.18 and not ever budging btw) which also burn up a twin-burner storm at 8x.

- hear hear, my sentiments exactly.

Anyways, i hold very little faith or interest in quality scanning, it's always good for a couple scans to see what it all means, ie novelty value and a bit of knowledge learned; however the crux of all this is obviously whether the data on the disc is any good or not. Playback problems is a good sign of problems but can be misleading as to the cause. I personally cut straight to a CRC check on the problematic disc and work up from there. If there's no actual corruption on the disc then obviously the problem is elsewhere. If there is corruption then the hunt is on to find the root cause, could be burner failing or dirty or other things, but basically always start at the bottom, ie a CRC check..

Bout to take the plunge and order 100 Verb DVD+R's. Data Life's will code out as MCC, correct? I know at one point they were CMC Mag, but years ago.

Tokijin,

I'm pretty sure that any verbatim media will code out as MCC now. The only ones to watch out for are the pearl whites. They were coding out as CMC Mag but have now outsorced to ritek. There could still be some CMags floating around though so don't buy the pearl whites. I've never got anything but MCC's everytime I've purchased verbatim.

Yes, I've checked the settings and they seem fine.

I've completed a battery of tests and have the results in this document: http://fukushima.us/test1-results.pdf

Overall, the burns went fine and no new coasters.

All the ScanDisc tests in Nero CD/DVD were consistent and showed clean (all green) scans.

Burning at 8x seems to produce about the same results as 4x burns.

PI failures seem to be consistent across the board. Difference in burn speed and/or scan speed makes little difference. Same with jitter rates; all in ragne of 10-12%.

PI errors were worst at the fastest speed (one test done @ 16x). 4x scans produced about 1/2 the PI errors than scans at 8x.

Based on the testing so far, it seems that the optimal burn/test parameters for TYG02 on a DW1650 are:
Burn at 8x,
DiscQuality test at 8x,
ScanDisc test at 16x.

I've got to search out some +R media locally then run more tests. I'll compile a similar test report.

Wow, and I thought I was anal.

Dunno Windtrade, the total PIF's and PIE's do seem a bit high. The max spikes are comparable to a lot of my scans on -R's. I think it's more likely you got a less than stellar batch of TY's, than hardware problems. Granted a lot of my experience is in other areas, but the same principle applies, hardware issues are only likely when everything else has been eliminated. I definitely notice on my 1640 that I get fewer max and total PIF's than -R's. It's not always obvious, but over the long haul, I definitely get fewer. So I think it's just a combo of you being hypersensitive and using -R's, perhaps even a bad batch of TY's. Either way, try some +R's. I ordered 100 Verb 8x DVD+R's from newegg.com for $44. Not the greatest deal, but better than what I can get locally for sure. I got the labeled Verb's, not Datalife. Supermediastore.com has 100 TY 8x DVD+R's for $42 with free ground shipping.

Hi herrick
What's the make & model of your drive? Not all support this w/ Nero.

To use it - have the disc in the drive then go to Nero ToolKit>CD-DVD Drive speed. Click on the 'disc quality' tab & click start.
If your drive doesn't support this feature Nero will give you an error saying that.

Out of curiousity, I ordered these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817130957

Mort mentioned to stay away from the pearl white Verb's which could code as CMC Mag. In theory, these be MCC003 right? I'm quite sure they will, if they're CMC Mag, sending them back to newegg with the quickness. Excited, I want to try em out and scan em. I hope they work out as well Yuden000T02.

@Tokijin: I've ordererd two stacks of those, so far, and I love 'em. I'd rank them equal to my TYs, in every respect. They burn great at 8x, great compatibility on PS2 and standalones, and very low error/failures on every disc. I'm sure you'll be happy w/ them.
