lol - I think 95 is the highest score LiteOn gives soemtimes w/ good media. Same here on mine - burning mainly at 8x - occasionally 12x. But I did get a 98 on 16x Verbs burned at 16x - the diff was I didn't burn to the edge like I usually do. Probably the reason for the 98.

I just wonder what they would be if I burned to 4471 (?) mb like I usually do.
Next time I burn to a 16x non printable at 16x I'll have to do another scan and see. Kinda curious :)
Plus LiteOn updated the firmware on this drive in Sept - need to check out some scans with the new one.

@binkie7: From what I've noticed, the quality is very closely related to the PIF max you get on your disc. Since yours never went above 1, you got a 98. Most burns will give you a max of 2 or higher, which lowers the score correspondingly. I pretty much always get a max PIF of 2 or more, meaning 95 is the best I'm going to get using my LiteOn. The BenQ seems to rate differently, but that could be due to it being able to measure more of the quality variables (Jitter/PO Failures).

Same here with my Lite-On, the majority of the scans will yield 2 max PIF, and a score of 95, one in 4 will give a max of 1, and a score of 98, one in 20 will give a zero max, but those are few and far between.

@docTY

Thank you for your insight about the different codes. I understand it and know how to check that. To answer your question, the drive I am currently using is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4040B. I am a very likely candidate for firmware problems, as I have never updated my burner firmware before. Could you help me further?

This drive is the original that came inside my Gateway desktop computer a few years ago. I've asked Gateway for help, but they would not or could not help me. Inside the device manager properties it says it's Driver Date: 01/07/2001, Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0, Driver Provider: Microsoft. I'm surprised Microsoft is listed here. When I pasted that model number into Google what I see are either refernces to LG or pleas for help. I would like to avoid ruining my burner if possible. I don't even know which site to trust to download burner firmware from.

Here your burner and firmware updates at this site. Very trustworthy.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=16

Download DVD Decrypter and use it to identify your current firmware. Since you have a Gateway, you probably have the OEM version. If your current firmware begins with a "A3xx" then OEM, use latest A3 update, if it begins with "A1xx", then use the A1 series latest update. Follow instructions to the letter in flashing your drive.

@garmoon, @docTY

DVD Decrypter says my burner has version A103. As per your advice garmoon, I looked at the latest of all five A1xx links listed for my burner on rpc1.org. DVD Decrypter also found a link for just my burner, so I pasted that below for your easy reference. Since the latest (July 2003?) A114 is Japanese, I suppose I should install the second-latest A113. However this one confuses me. In it's installer it comes up saying "Firmware update for IBM multi-burner plus IDE". I'm wondering how does IBM's name get involved? So far I've got myself to accept there's an LG burner in my Gateway computer. I am very novice at this hardware/firmware stuff. Please continue guiding me.

@Nastajus

we all start somewhere with firmwares and flashing, it's a bit more difficult to find the EXACT one you need when we look into updating firmware for company built PCs (ie. Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.) :)

i've worked with Dells extensively in the past long ago before i started building my own computers, but my Dell laptop right now ONLY accepts DELL OEM firmware for my slim-laptop dvd burner, i tried everything i could/knew how to do about cross-flashing, but it would not work (i've cross-flashed EVERY drive i currently own at one point or another with the ONLY exception of my Dell laptop drive)...

anyways, you need not worry about the firmware being "japanese" or "german" or from any other country of origin...on my Benq(s) i was using a Chinese made firmware for the longest time before Benq's website had a newer firmware released a month later...country of origin makes no difference for firmwares, as long as it is compatible/made specifically for the drive you own :P

since you are using the A1xx version for your particular LG, i would suggesting using the newest one available to you at this time, which would be the A114; the file once downloaded is an pre-packed installer, hence the .exe format...simply double click it and follow the instructions for flashing carefully~ :)

http://www.logitec.co.jp/DRIVERS/DVD/D1210_03.EXE

the reason you found the whole "IBM" spiel was because it was IBM who made the firmware for the A113 firmware (or at least had a part in the write strategies/firmware tables) :) if you notice the other versions of firmware, the RETAIL drives manufactured and packaged by LG (korean company) the firmwares associated with them are actually MADE by LG (whether it be from the korean LG website or the global LG site, it really does not matter...they are the same) this happens frequently when certain manufacturers produce the actual burners and sell them to other companies to "rebadge" them and sell it under their own company name and logo (ie. Liteon makes quite a few models of Sony brand burners and Benq did as well; the value line Plextors are rebadged drives manufactured by Benq as well...those are just 2 examples in a whole slew of diff. manufacturer dvd burners sold retail under a different "brand name") :)

flashing firmware is pretty straight forward with many of the recent "self-extracting installers" included now by many drive manufacturers...it's all about making sure you choose the correct drive (ie. drive letter and actual drive) to flash and the firmware program will do the rest...just make sure you don't have any media inside your drive while flashing and definitely DO NOT SHUT down your computer in the middle of a flash...other than that, just follow the prompts as asked by the firmware program and all should be well~ :)

good luck, if you need any more help, feel free to come back in here and post (please let us know how things work out for ya with the firmware and flashing as well, good or bad); i still do check out some of the forums here from time to time when time permits, but if you get stuck w/ anything in particular, feel free to PM me, just in case i miss your post on any particular threads by accident~ :)

I've never had any problems with Ritek Cincy, keep stocking up with them when Office Depot has a sale on their house brand which are RItek, can't beat the price of $19.99 per 100 pack when on sale. Try them you'll like them.

Ridata is Ritek's own "house brand" where they guarantee it's their highest quality "grade A" media~ :) Ritek is still the manufacturer.

i've used both Ritek branded as well as Ridata Ritek branded media in the past, both AT THE TIME (few years ago) appeared to be good quality stuff; i honestly can't tell you how things are with Ritek these days, but from most accounts from members here that HAVE used them (Office Depot house brand manufactured by Ritek), seems they have good success still~ (8x & 16x DVD+R discs especially) :)

there will always be that ongoing debate about the DVD-R Riteks however, gurnard and i have had very good success with the RitekG04/G05s (4x/8x DVD-R format of Riteks); but MANY people report issues as of late and there have been a few articles i've read regarding a degredation of quality on Ritek's quality control dept...i dunno how much of it is rumor and how much is fact~ :) but, since i've responded to so many complaints of Ritek (namely the 8x DVD-R G05s), i no longer bother arguing about MY OWN good batch of 500+ Ridata Ritek 8x dvd-r; they still play just fine today and quality scans are still in the low 90s or high 80s~ :)

u'll get many diff. opinions on Ritek here on AD, some have great success with them and they are cheaper than Verbs or TYs, online AND in store if you know where to look~ (ie. which brands use Ritek as the manufacturer) :) some have nothing but issues with them...it really depends on one's personal setup/firmware/drive i suppose~

I have found that is is better to give stuff away, then to deal w/ fighting to get mine back! I deal w/ alot of half way houses and many do not have any money... AND I connot afford to keep dishing out money when my own collection tends to put a hole in my pocket ah,ah, ah,- its easier to keep the peace this way... beside there are those close to me that have no idea of the word "borrow" means
