@ gus738,
It looks like to me that the total process is only taking 19 minutes, therefore coding about 10 minutes and writing about 9 minutes. That seems pretty good to me. I would guess that your media is 8x and your writer is writing at about 8x. I am trying to learn from the gurus here so my questions may be a little late. Are you getting bad burns, bad scans, or just worried about burn speed? If I am correct an 8x burn should take about 7-9 minutes depending on the size of the iso file. Just curious and trying to learn, like I said. :)

@cincyrob,
I am aware that the "Jedi Master" is applying the force but are you using the new Lite-on or the HP to burn. I know there are some bad batches of discs but haven't you had problems with the HP in the past? Not saying you should trash the drive but are discs the same batch of Verb's interupting the time space continuum from a few weeks ago?

@kivory666 (the Jedi Master),
Just trying to learn here. I didn't see the answers to my questions in the previous posts so asking them now. :) I have been getting better burns and scans the last few weeks and I am attributing some of it to using DVD-RB Pro. I downloaded the FREE version and was so impressed that I wanted to be able to edit the content of my backups for more saved space so "bought" the Pro version. I just wish my machine would crank them out in an hour (4 hrs for me) like yours. You, aabbccdd, and IHoe have the B@MB when it comes to computers. I am getting scans in the mid-high nineties consistantly now. I use TY's (of course), Verb's (because of Mort81 and Creaky.....lol), and Ritek's because I want decent quality discs to give to my parents and "friends". I will post some scans later. Man I want to thank you and the other gurus again for all the great advice, help, and patience you deliver on a consistant basis.

i just got my lite-on yesterday.only 4 burns on it so far and they have been reburns(copy a copy). as for the verbs i have had a bad batch i thinksome would work out great and other look like that scan up there.... the HP drive since i did this last firmware update has preformed better, plus i have been useing Nero recode2 makeing the extra pass for quality and the last 4 movies i did that i have scaned are around 93-95 which is alot better than the 2 disc i sent docTY to scan for me... but that hp drive is going in my old puter for me to play with got the litey in my main puter now.....im all out of verb now. am kinda scared to get more. dont want another bad batch...lol

@cincyrob,
I thought you were using CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD. I tried the trial versions but I wasn't very impressed over DVDShrink or Nero Recode2. I like the Nero program now with the better (newer) computer, faster and better with the upgraded CPU as long as the compression ratio is not to high. Did the Doc recommend Nero Recode2 as the preferred transcoder? Again learning from the "Jedi Master".......lol. Sorry about the off topic post Doc, I will get on topic in the next one.

@greensman

i'm sorry if i had previously missed a question of yours earlier, i went back a few pages and i saw a post that i interpreted as a "comment" rather than a question? i dunno, sometimes i skim through stuff so quickly that it's very easy for me to miss a question or 2 or 3 :)

as to your "question" now...dvd-rb pro + cce/procoder are simply unmatched when you talk about bringing a DVD9 down to fit a single layer DVD5 disc. the difference between dvd-shrink/nero recode/clonedvd2 is that their engine utilizes a TRANSCODER to rebuild the dvd you are shrinking, while CCE or Procoder or any of the other ENCODERs that can be used w/ dvdrb are as stated, ENCODERs :) i would recommend no other combination other than dvd-rb + your choice of encoder when TIME IS NO ISSUE for the user, this combo will produce THE BEST quality of a movie backup, as i'm assuming you have seen for yourself (especially when high compression is used) :)

the other programs such as Nero recode, clonedvd2, dvd-shrink, etc. are all very good programs for what they can accomplish in a shorter/quicker duration of time, but if you are picky about quality like some members here are, go with dvd-rb pro + cce/other true encoders to do the job right! :)

as to having a computer powerful enough to cut the prepare/encode/rebuilding times down noticeably, i can tell you first hand from experience that even my AMD system can't complete the process in under an hour (OC'ed @2.75ghz 4400+ x2 cpu), it's only with my Conroe build that i am done in approx. 45 min. :) and even with the Conroe, you would have to get to AT LEAST 3.3ghz for the "under an hour" time to be even possible~ a stock Conroe will NOT accomplish this, that's where the whole "overclocking" aspect comes into play~ :)

i estimate aabbccdd + Ihoe's dvd-rb+cce times to be between 1.5hours-2.5 hours, depending on the movie/number of passes/compression; while their systems ARE in fact "high-end," (no disputing that)without overclocking i can assure you that their dvd-rb time will NOT be under an hour...i am in NO WAY downplaying their great/fast systems, i'm simply stating FACTS...running stock there is no cpu out in the market at this moment that can accomplish such a feat (with the ONLY possible exception MAYBE being the stock X6800 top end Conroe by Intel, and even that is a MAYBE).

as to you getting good quality scores in the mid 90s, that's great and i hope this trend continues for you...your choice of an excellent program(s) + good quality media has given you backups that you can be proud of! when you refer to "quality" though, do you mean that when viewed on your tv playing on your standalone dvd player the "quality" seems to be "better" when using dvd-rb? that SHOULD be the case, but "quality" scores based on Nero cd-dvd speed do not necessarily indicate that the QUALITY of the picture will be there when viewed on your "big-screen" or HDTV (depending on the compression used and which program you used to compile said movie) :) i don't know if that makes sense...

here is an example that might clarify a bit...i've had a backup of mine that i tested using nero's cd-dvd speed on my Benq that scored a seemingly "very good" 97 score, so, i thought nothing of it until my wife decided to watch that backup (i store all my original purchased dvds in a separate room, all my backups are in either binders stored vertically or in jewel cases) well, to make a long story short, the actual backup had short bursts of pixellation in random parts of the movie, however short and "not noticeable" they were to the untrained eye, i saw them on my HDTV plasma...it bothered me enough that i took the disc out of the dvd player to check the bottom to see if there were any scratches or dust that might have been causing this, it was completely clean and pristine. i put that particular disc in my living room dvd player (high end Denon unit that is VERY VERY picky about media it chooses to play or not play) as the final test...right at the beginning, i could hear the disc spinning up inside the dvd player, but it took a lil longer than "usual" to start...from that point, about 10 min. into it, i noticed the pixellation again even on my much smaller HDTV widescreen in the living room and i got fed up and smashed the disc and went to burn a new one...using another disc from the SAME spindle of TYs i had used to burn the now destroyed copy, went through the process of creating another backup...upon finishing, scanned it immediately for a quality score of 95 (2pts lower than previous one)...put that bad boi back in the dvd players and NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER...ended up watching the entire movie w/ my wife and even i was satisfied with the video quality...

so, the lesson learned here should be: don't COMPLETELY rely on the quality scores from nero/dvdinfopro/etc. to determine whether or not you have yourself a good backup, a quick scanning on your home dvd player will show you any issues if there are any upon playback, the software based tests are just a reaffirmation of what you know to be true~ :)

i admit i've had my fair share of backups that were attrocious when scanning (quality scores of 70 and BELOW), thinking it was a fluke w/ my Benq drive that day, i scanned it on 4 other drives (Liteons, NEC, other model Benq and even my totally unreliable in "scanning"-drive, the Pioneer) every one of them reported between 58-79 scores, so there was nothing wrong w/ my initial Benq scan, it WAS accurate...usually, i would toss the disc out without even thinking about it if i got scores that low, but just for kicks, i decided to try playing it on the home dvd player...lo and behold, it played back FLAWLESSLY, dare i say even "better" than my other backups with much higher scores...seeing how far i could push my luck, i tried to re-rip ON THE FLY my seemingly perfect, yet low scoring backup...re-ripped with no issues, quite fast actually as my Pioneer was reading/ripping it @16x :)

anyways, my point is that the quality tests CAN in certain instances be somewhat misleading, there really is no 100% accurate way that the normal AVG. person like you or me could viably use to determine the discs' quality. treat it as a guideline and use your own eyes when viewing on your tv as the final test for reassurance/confidence :)

if you see issues, ie. freezing/skipping/artifacts/pixellation/stopping when viewing, what does that tell you about the 97 score you just got from nero/dvdinfopro? kinda makes ya think huh? LOL

@cincyrob

GENERALLY speaking, i've always gotten higher scores w/ my DVD+R media compared to that of my DVD-R, however, it's a GENERAL statement from MY OWN experiences...if you want to examine OVERALL/CUMULATIVE total of how many 99s scores i've gotten, i have MORE using 4x DVD-R TYG01s by Taiyo Yudens compared to my current favorite 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s and even my beloved MCC003 Verbs~ :) when they're good, they're GOOD!

have a good one all

good grief i can't possibly beat that reply :)

suffice it to say that i myself don't put too much emphasis on quality scans; they're all nice and pretty and everything, but i take them purely as eye candy; as for proving discs are good/bad, always for me it's CRC scans/re-copyability/playback on standalone player - in that order (however of course the 1st time i usually experience a problem is in playback, but if that happens i start at CRC scan then re-copyability etc so the same order of checking applies)

Got some Taiyo Yuden, tried and tested my first burn. The disk came back poor quality. Dont wanna try anymore at risk of wasting discs. On the label of the taiyo yuden discs it talks about firmware must be at new recording standard. Could this be my problem? I havent updated my fireware at all before.

my recorder is a liteon SOHW-832S

YES update your firmware to the latest heres a link

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

also what programs are you using to transcode/burn with?

remember to burn at 8x max. (4x starting out would be best) on a clean machine without other programs running while your transcoding/burning

@stedaman - very good choice of Nero version - 6.6.0.18. anyways, i see a couple problems already; give me a couple minutes to decode the logfile..

..done...

Nero Version: 6.6.0.18
- an excellent choice of version there; i'm still using 6.6.0.18 and am not budging unless in the future i need to buy new burners that aren't supported in 6.6.0.18

- a-ha - DMA needs to be ON for those drives, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

- those TY discs are supported fine in the burners' firmware as they're showing up in this section

Hehe, I upgraded my Nero before and didnt like it and quickly went back to that one.

The burn before the firware upgrade wasa total failure, whether it was the disc (doubtful) or the firmware I dunno but the 2nd disc came out with a 95 QS. However it still had more errors than Verbatim MC 003's. About 500 PI failures compared to 70.

I think ive got the DMA all on now, thx for the link. Will see what happens

I followed the directions given in your link creaky, after uninstalling and installing with three reboots 2 drives still remained PIO. Would the two that are still not DMA really cause disc errors/coasters?

- let's try fixing DMA manually, via the registry (be very careful in the registry) -
Quote:
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.

Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

Note that many CD and DVD drives only use UDMA-2, because their data rate is much lower than that of a hard disk. This is normal and no reason to worry.
Other drives will be dragged down to the lowest speed so yes, DMA needs sorting.
