If Verb's are on sale locally I'd consider getting them. I overpaid for my TY's, but I don't mind since they're TY's. Unfortunately I live in a small hick town, so I don't have a CompUSA or Office Depot near my house. Our staple's sucks, they only carry MIT Sony's. K-Mart had oodles of MIJ Sony DVD+R's, so I bit the bullet and paid $30 for a 50 spindle. Not highway robbery, but I definitely overpaid. I found a 50 spindle of MIJ Sony DVD-R's at Wal-Mart for $27 which coded out at as TYG02. That comes to $58 for 100 a hundered spindle. .58 cents a disc is a little steep. I've got enough TY's to last awhile, and hopefully the Birthday fairy will bring me a 200 pack of TY DVD-R's off sms.com for $69 with free shipping for my B-day.

Before I spent money on a large order, supermediastore.com offers a dozen disc's for free, you do have to pay the S+H, it comes with 2 each of 6 brand names, the couple bucks was well worth it especially if iy gives you peice of mind.

berger103 ,if you can find some Fujiflim or Sony DVD-R thats (MIJ) thoses will code out as Taiyo Yuden so you might look at your local stores first and the Samsung standalone i had didnt like the Sony DVD-R either but the Taiyo Yuden worked fine so my guess you will be fine with the TY DVD-R , and if you get the 300 pack and they dont work (which is highly unlikely) i would be willing to buy them from you as long as you live in the States

i just burned my first ty, a TYG04. everything went beautifully, and the disc tested at 99.02% with dvdinfo. however, when i tried to play it in my standalone, a panasonic dmr e80h, i encountered a problem i've never had before. an error message came up that the disc would not play in my region. how is this possible? the region encoding isn't carried on the blank is it? it couln't be. the movie is one i've been burning onto various discs as a testbed, so i know it's not that. my burner is new (benq 1655) but i've played burns from it on my standalone. any help?

ok that's a new one to me, hehe, and i think i am up to date with my Taiyo Yudens...at THIS point right now, there is no such thing as "TYG04" :) unless you live in a virtual "media paradise" and these are the new 18x speed rated Taiyo Yuden in the DVD-R format~ :)

please copy and paste the dvdinfo disc info from this disc...i'm curious as to what this actually is...

i gotta see what media you are referring to before i can assist you with your standalone player's issue...

sorry, that is a typo. they are TYG02. i was thinking about the riteks as i typed. but the standalone problem is real. they play fine on my computers, but the standalone gives me the error message. is this just a case of my dvd player not liking TY media?

that seems to be the case...obviously, i'm assuming you bought these 8x rated TYG02s from supermediastore (i recall reading in other threads that you've posted in you got them @sms.com~) :)

anyways, there was someone else that we all were helping earlier in this thread (i think) that was also having issues playing TY DVD-R format media on his standalones...that is very rare indeed, i've personally never encountered a standalone dvd player that WILL NOT play TY DVD-R format discs, i have 2 Toshiba players that will NOT play TY DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom, which is even more weird, but the issues of standalones NOT being able to play TY DVD-R format is beyond me... :)

perhaps someone else can figure out a solution to ur current situation, considering you stated that the disc quality test after the burn was a staggering 99.02%, it's NOT the media quality in question here..it's def. your picky standalone NOT liking these discs...obviously, since it's a DVD-R format disc, booktyping/bitsetting is NOT an option...

i hope others have some advice, but from the sounds of it...there is just a compatibility issue with your standalone not liking Taiyo Yudens, nothing else i can say about it~ :) sorry

thanks for responding docty! 99.02% seemed pretty amazing to me too! the second disc i tested was 98.76%. pretty good media. i'm not totally averse to buying another dvd player, i just hoped it might be something else. maybe this is the excuse i've been looking for to build a kick-ass htpc.

you just happened to catch me while i was online here on AD~ :) now how is that for service? j/k~ hehe

yeah, both scores are outstanding, very good burns on them; it's a shame that SOME picky standalones don't appreciate them, i know this all too well myself~ :)

sometimes we get lucky with standalone compatibility, sometimes we don't fare as well...perhaps ur new media center PC setup might be ur answer~ :) good luck, just outta curiousity, does that picky standalone player you have play ALL OTHER brand media properly? and it's only picky in regards to Taiyo Yuden DVD-R? if that is the case, wow...might look for a firmware update on that standalone, that MIGHT be another solution to it not playing TYs :)

I'm sure those who frequent this forum are already well aware of TY's reputation, but I thought I would share my own personal experience.

I just ordered and received my first set of TY's from supermediastore.com and am more than happy with the discs. I was using MCC Verbatim and Sony discs (made in Taiwan -- manufacturer unknown) and have had problems with quality. On every disc I burned the quality got horrible from the half way point on the disc and on. When I ran the burned disc through Nero's CD/DVD speed was getting quality in the high 80's with PI errors maxing out at about 160-180 and PI failures maxing out around 5 or 6 or so.

I just backed up my first movie on a TY disc (8x DVD+R Yuden000t02) ran it through Nero CD/DVD and the results were a 95 quality! The PI Errors maxed out at EIGHT!! Those discs are great.

I was ready to buy a new burner and I was sure I was just going to keep wasting money on store bought media and not being sure what I was getting. I found the advice of DocTY and was steered in the right direction. Thanks Man!

Just one question.... The discs I already have burned on Sony or Verbatim media, can I create a disc image from the burned copy, then burned it to a TY disc and expect the same type of quality or should I definately use the original again?

anytime buddy, that's what i'm here for~ :) as to re-ripping those already burned discs again, i would SUGGEST using the original to rip/encode and then reburn onto the Taiyo Yudens; reason i say that is this, the backups you already made no doubt have at least a FEW errors on them, i wouldn't be surprised if you have a lot of CRC errors actually as you are stating that you
Quote:

if you see it upon playback, whether it be skipping/pixellation/freezing/etc, then it's always a GOOD idea to use a FRESH source (the original) to make a clean backup again onto TY media~ :) CRC errors are STILL CrC errors, no matter how you look at it, if it's there in the backup copy, you don't want to transfer anything "bad" from one disc to another~ i would almost always recommend re-ripping/encoding from the original again, especially since compression was PROBABLY used when you made your first backup, obviously, the less compression used to fit onto a standard 4.7gb blank dvd, the BETTER the quality of the resulting video/picture~ :P

there are a lot of factors in making backups of backups, lotta people have different opinions as to the quality of them 2nd/3rd/4th backup...i do it all the time personally, but, if i want to reassure myself of the best possible copy i could possibly have, i will 100% always do it from the original (this is especially true if you burn onto as many DL discs as i do, it would be a total waste of an expensive DL disc to make a backup of a backup(with compression) onto it~ on DLs, definitely redo the process over again from the original~ :P

docTY~

plan4 a couple things , what speed are you burning at? what programs are you using to encode and burn? and what movie are you backing up?

try burning at a slower speed (4X) to help playback problems.

try using CloneDVD 2 with anydvd(this program makes the dvd region free)

make sure your firmware is up to date on your drive

and dont run other programs while your in the burning proccess

TYG02 seems to work pretty well in your panasonic, as do most discs, according to videohelp.com (see link)

I'd be surprised if its not an encoding problem, good suggestions from aabbccdd.

Also, if your using Nero make sure there are no relaxed restrictions, as some panasonics have trouble with those settings.

good suggestions by both aabbccdd and ashj~ :) while i try to help users with issues, i often times miss "other" factors that may be worthwhile to investigate "under the surface"... thanks for pointing that out guys~ was in quite a rush (on a short break from work) when i posted earlier yesterday, should have given it a bit more thought~

cheers boys, keep up the good work~

So Doc, did you hear anything about your BenQ 1650 or 1655, whichever one it was? I'm curious to see if the new BenQ's are worthwhile. I could use a new primary burner, one that supports PI/PO scans with the official firmware. As my Sony is an OEM BenQ 1640, I'm interested in anything they may come out with in the future. Any input? Cheers!

Yeah, I'm really very content with my litey 1653 and benq 1620 pro. They each have their pros and cons. I like the litey for kprobe scans and it rips faster than my benq. It also burns my sony dvd+rw's (phillips 041 mid code) better than my benq but my benq burns about all other media I use just as good or better.

I would like to have both the plextor px760a and the benq 1655 but really don't need them. I have 4 drive bays but don't see the need for more than 2 drives.

I'll probably just leave things as they are unless the need arises. Champaign taste on a beer budget. I like beer just fine. :)

aabbccdd is right, if you do not see an advertisment for the free 12 pack you will have to call them, I got mine during an add they sent me on the internet, they don't always advertize it, a friend of mine wanted the same deal and told me he could'nt fine an add for it, I told him to give them a call which he did and they were glad to do it for him, they know it benefits them in doing that because mostly people that take advantage of that deal wind up buying pleany more afterwords, so most definatly give it a shot, good luck.
