Yup ! Yup!! What greensman said ! I can confirmm that the Value line / thermal / Shiny lacquers can be written on with Sharpies ! I do it all the Time ! I would say Black would be the appropriate color though as long as it is readable any color or shade would be fine !

Thanks. I still prefer the silver/matte or white inkjet printable over shiny. But everybody has their choice of disc finish...

The topic for Good Morning America on ABC was "dumpster diving for food" at your local grocery store. Best time is right after they close, since this is when they throw away the good stuff. I couldn't believe it. LMAO!

here's a couple more links (i cheated and googled as the only Plextor's i'd ever used myself were the awesome PX-32TSi - 32speed SCSI cd-rom drives back in the 90's).

Says Pioneer is the OEM. So Plextor is getting drives from other sources now instead of making it's own? The IDE PX-800a says Sony with NEC as the chipset. Very strange....

Well, Plextor has always been synonymous with top quality in media burning hardware, so I would be surprised if they didn't ensure that remained true, regardless of the manufacturer. Glad they're working well for you, aabbccdd!

So who makes the best IDE & SATA DVDR drives today? Or are they all pretty much the same now?

For recording TY's I'm guessing??? LOL.
If you ask 10 different people you're gonna get at least 5 different answers and I bet NOT one drive model # is repeated. LOL.
OK with all that said I think the Lite-on Company offers the best all around DVDRW drive right now. They scan (read) pretty well, they burn well with stock f/w and if you want to explore unofficial f/w you can get some great stuff that even can make improvements. :)
NOW that I've said that I have many Lite-on's, 2 Pioneers, 2 Samsungs, 1 LG and a couple of other NO NAME brands that will remain no-named. LOL. I've also owned 2 BENQ's in the past but have recently sold them to friends that I hope remain friends. LOL. :P
I would do some homework and find something that meets your needs. You might post something in the PC thread or Hardware thread and see what happens. :) I won't link you off the sight but CDFreaks is a great place to do some "searching" and "researching" for new drives and media.
I haven't really found enough information that deals directly with some of the questions that I have so I've searched elsewhere and received advice from others here as well that have experience with media and different DVDRW drives. :)
Good luck to you and your hunt for the PERFECT drive. :D

btw these better be for TY media and other HIGH quality dvd media. :P

I'd have to agree with greensman. My Lite-On 1693S is still performing like a champ with my printably TY DVD-Rs (8x, burned at max speed). I've leaned toward my Benq 1655 for DVD+R burning, but the Lite-On does well with those, also.

Why have you so many drives? I agree with your answer also. I never have used a litey, I like my BenQ1650s but you can't buy a decent BenQ nowadays and evidently Plextor is not making theirs anymore, according to aabbccdd. I would buy Litey DH-20AI if I were in the market now.

Since I have the Benq1650's and Liteys Plextor 750 & 716 sata & 716ext and LG gsah42L and Plextor has left the building I like these Lg's still love the old Plextors best. Next set of drives will probably be some more LG's.The Ty002 love the Plextor and LG Satas still haven't won me over but I haven't burnt any Ty 16x and all I burn are +R's.I see zebadee is liking the Samsung and I might give that a shot the last 2 I bought a year ago I sold off.I'm still reading what everyones using to see how they hold up.Number one for me has been Ty and Plextor. I can't pass up a good deal and I like to try different drives to see what's good and what's not. :P :D
btw just received my 2 NEW Sony (NEC) SATA's from Santa UPS...hehehe. So add 2 more to that list.
@cincyrob,
I detect a little "drive" jealousy. hehehe. ;) Oh! and you forgot WHORE!!! (can I say that??)
btw: How far off topic are we now???
I feel guilty and need to say something about TY's. So how do you guys like those new DVD+R 16X TY's??

Yeah I've got an Ext X16 LG 2166D and it will flat out read almost any disc inserted, by far and away, ahead of the BenQs. But the benQs burn better. for me.
@greesman LMAO 2 more burners. How do you keep the sand out of them?

So does Lite-On & LG update firmware on a regular basis or are you stuck with what the drive has? Reason why I'm asking is before I bought my Plextor 716-A & after whatever the drive was in the Sony I used to own died I bought an LG external burner. Oh it did 16x alright but not with some of the discs I had & there was no firmware update available on the LG web site so I threw the drive away & bought the Plextor. Been happy ever since and the Plextor has stayed with my homebuilt computer which is faster than the old Sony. Hopefully my drive will last a long time as it's the last Plextor I'm going to buy.

- a wise choice, i'm not buying a modern PC with 86GB of memory just to use Vista when all my other machines work perfectly well with XP or variants of linux (even have an old Win98SE machine still).

nice one, i've just setup yet another linux box, i'm starting to lose tracks of my machines now
