@creaky & Sickley: You know, I can totally see where you're coming from on the whole Vista thing, but I would REALLY miss Vista if I went back to XP. You start to miss the little things that are admittedly just quality of life details rather than true improvements. I think I would be doing the same thing, though, if my computer ran worse on Vista than it does on XP, but because I have 4GB of RAM and Vista x64 can actually SEE all four gigs, I end up coming out slightly ahead in Vista. In the end, though, it's more about staying current with the latest operating system than any of the little (and admittedly trivial) things Vista does that I like. I can only hope that SP1+ will address how inefficiently Vista deals with system resources.

what i forgot to add is that i'd love to buy a new PC, something like a Core Duo or whatever they're called, primarily for use with DVD Rebuilder, ie to reduce my 3to5 hour marathon encoding sessions (on 3 my DVD Rebuilder pc's) to something like an hour or hour and a half or whatever time it takes on new kit.. however i'd still be using XP on there, however fast the machine, thereby giving all the machine's resources to DVD Rebuilder/other apps, as opposed to Vista itself stealing too many resources.

Bratcher my LG drives have the software for automatic firmware updates as they come out.My older LG wasn't as impressive to me as these new ones. But as pointed out before personal preferences on drives. The Ty's are treated Royally by my Plextor and Lg, and the Benqs I've turned pretty much into readers. Chris

My Benq DW1650's are still going strong, still have 2 new and boxed, just in case, have i think 3 in use at the moment, on different PC's.
I still get burn errors in my Nero logs (when burning various TY on the Benq's), and have had these errors across all the Benq's since i first got them, but have not once had any playback issues or recopy issues..

CreakyI hear you my benq 1620 was a good burner just up and quit one day. But the 1650"s have been workhorses I broke out my other 2 new ones the other day and as you said on some Ty and mainly Verbs sometimes have a little quirk to them that scared me at first but never had a playback problem and no matter which older burns I pull out have good playback to this day.I have no qualms with the Benqs except for their customer service when the 1620 took a bow and a year later i finally got a email back from them on the 1620 and sent back that I thought a year was a little long on their acknowledgement and their excellent readers also. I guess because my first bought optional burners were the Plextors i have a blond moment of love with them. LOL Chris
Edit I'm still playing with rebuilder and the quality is awesome but with my dual core I'm still at 3 hours, but it's probably something I'm doing wrong and haven't fumbled my way through yet.

Question:
Does Vista interfere with ripping a commercial copy protected CD to the hard drive? If not then how well does DVD Decryptor run on Vista?
Still running XP & waiting on Vista service pack 1....

@Creaky and ChrisC
Are you running QSuite with your BenQ1650s? I have finally disabled the WOPC feature and my discs burn much faster. With that feature on, the burner is constantly readjusting itself and slower. Have not noticed any playback issues. They are having no trouble burning Verb 16X at 16X or the Office depot Richjpn discs either. The Sony T02s Tys are 8X and still burned a 8X. The BenQs have loved those discs from the get go.

i haven't touched QSuite since i first bought the drives, at the time i altered the settings according to a post i'd read by zebedee if i recall correctly, though i can't remember what the settings are now. I'm not one to keep messing with settings, so they're still set the same from install time..
edit- i think WOPC is turned off on mine, will have to check my settings when i'm back home some time

The WOPC on my QSuite is set to enable itself with every reboot. You can't turn it off permanently on my version.

@Creaky
Thanks for the thread references. I have it set properly for Verbs and TYs (disabled WOPC) Even the Ricohjpn are fine with it disabled. I just have to remember to reset it after each reboot. I've had it on my desktop so I wouldn't forget about it. I'll have to watch the verb DLs and see tho since I don't do many of those. But at 2.4X they should be fine too.

@bratcher: Vista won't interfere with those high computational tasks like DVD ripping, generally speaking, any more than WinXP does. Usually what people are referring to with Vista is how many memory hogging services and processes it runs in the background by default, and that you later have to follow a guide or use a third party program to disable because you'll never have a need for them (like pen functions that are only needed for Tablet PCs and the like). No, typically the cores on my E6600 are hardly active, and when doing a video conversion, the processors fluctuate between 50 and 75% and can finish a video file to DVD conversion in about 15 minutes for a 90 minute movie.
Also on the TY front, I too would love to hear any news about the water resistant printables. I typically try to stay around .35 a disc and under for printables, so I hope that someday the TY printable +Rs and the water resistant discs drop to around that price!

Quote: What guide or 3rd party program would I need to shut those unneded services off?
typically shutting down services will cause things to go evil, on windows operating systems. thats the issue im having now; my group policies service fails to launch and thus every other service soon follows in the process of crashing.
things you may want to do to increase performance would be to turn off all the new graphical interface stuff (i.e. aero glass), disable search indexing, and definently shut down the desktop sidebar. however, if your gonna shut down all this, you might as well just switch to win xp
one thing i typically do if i wanna free up resources (i do this in xp too.) is to go into task manager and kill the explorer shell process (explorer.exe) and rerun it when i need it again.
if your still intent on shutting down services here's a two page guide
back to TY, are the water resistant discs available only in printables? i've been tempted to get those armored tdk's but if TY makes water resistants i think i'll check those out.

@bratcher: Sickley's advice is all solid. I do enjoy the sidebar, but there was a very noticeable increase when I disabled it. I believe the biggest drain, however, was the RSS feeder, so if you like the sidebar, if you find a different means to check your RSS's, then you're probably fine using the sidebar. (I personally like monitoring my core temp, the weather, and processor usage.)
As for 3rd party programs that will help you figure out what to disable, I have found Vista Manager does a pretty good job in that regard. Guides come out fairly often as feature articles in the various computer magazines, but I don't know a specific magazine's month and year to help you out there (I read them then throw them away).

HERRICK: CDCoveers is great. I have used it about twenty times and found it fairly easy to use and very effective. My two complaints are that they don't have as an extensive choice of movie covers and they need an easier way to search for a title, like a box where you can just type in the title. But all in all its is a great source and thanks for the tip.

"they need an easier way to search for a title, like a box where you can just type in the title"
They do...I either gave you the wrong address or you might of ended up somewhere else then what I intended people to
http://www.cdcovers.cc/
The above address is very easy to find covers and very, very, rarely is there a cover I cannot find. Hope this helps...give it a try Ill be happy

Thanks, Herrick. I did find the search box which I had somehow overlooked. I did not find the movies I was looking for, namely, all the series of Ballykissangel, including the latest series 6; nor did I find any covers for the Father Brown mystery series. I haven't tried some of the others I couldn't find, but I will give them another try later. Thanks again for helping me out.

hey greensman,
you probably got too excite about this deal.
47.99 is still a pretty good deal for
those tyg02. shipping is only around 10~12 bucks.
This price is close to onsale price for the verbs
at brick and motor stores.

Yujen,
I "added" the premium line to my cart and then entered my zip code and it indicated the shipping was $0.00. I'll check again because I don't want to give false info. :D
....gm
EDIT
Yep the shipping isn't FREE, it's $8.83 to Texas here in my little neck of the woods. hehehe. SORRY for getting so excited. If it sounds to good to be true then it probably isn't!!! The first time I clicked on the deal it did indicate FREE shipping but I did it again after Yujenh's reply and then it "showed" $8.83. Again sorry for the "false" info.....corrected on this post and the previous one by me. :) BUT the value line are still FREE shipping for a few days. :D
