@stedaman

i often refer DMA issues to this particular page when registry changes are needed, here is a basic picture/screenshot of what needs to be done in the registry; hope this helps you even a little bit~ :)

if MCC003s are the media that is giving YOU the best results on YOUR setup, by all means, stick w/ the Verbatims~ :) what works "better" for me, might not work for you, individual results will vary~

@blivetNC

the vid. card from newegg that you linked to will work on your older mobo~ it's obviously an AGP chipset and is an older revision that limits it to 4x MAX, according to the Intel spec sheet for your particular mobo, your choice of the Sapphire Radeon is probably going to be the best choice for which your mobo can support~ :) it is def. a step up from your current nvidia geforce2 card~ enjoy your upgrade...

@docTY..
hey i did The Wild for my sons last weekend burnt it to a sony16x-r mij. burnt at 8x no problems with it.the boys have watched it about 5 times or so now with out any problems...just for kicks i did a QC scan on it. it started out great 98%up to about the 3.3 range, close to the edge of the disc.. then it started too get the bright red and yellow colors and the quality dropped to 54% and finished at 46%...could this be from being dirty,finger marks.....according to the scan the disc shouldnt play..lol but they havent had a problem one with it...

Get the drive in Ultra DMA mode 4 - most the newer ones support this. A bit faster transfer rate. If mode 2 is the highest you can get and your drive supports 4 sounds like your using an 40 pin cable. Switch to the 80 pin/ATA133 cable.

Sounds like you new pc will be much faster. Just a guess about 80% compression ratio using Recode and burning at 8x 20 mins?

@CincyRob,
you'll soon learn that scans really don't tell the whole story whebn it comes to playback and pixelation during playback, I have some 95 scans that won't play well on the Sony player, but run fine on everything else, some disks will scan at 85% and play fine on all, just depends upon the type of disk and how the drives reads the errors I guess. The real test, do they play well in the DVD player of your choice?

gus,

Dvd-rb/cce or procoder2 are encoding utilities and has nothing to do with the actual burning of the dvd. They are however the best utilities for compressing dvd files down to fit on a DVD5 (or even DVD9 if you are combining discs or files). They will give you the best video quality especially when the compression is over 80%.

I would think about replacing the TSST (samsung) dvdrw drive especially if you are not happy with the burns. They are not one of the better drives at least imo.

Mort you beat me to it. There's another member having trouble with these TSST drives-Samsungs. He replaced it and if I remember correctly Dell did it free. Your other drive looks to be a CD-RW drive and DVD-ROM reader combo. If you have any trouble with the TSST drive I would call Dell and complain. My Dell is over 3 yrs now and I have replaced all the optic drives that came with it.

@ DocTY,
Never a need to apologize to me. Sometimes my self thoughts escape onto the paper (screen in this case) and I put what I'm thinking at the time (lol). I was looking for some answers to other people's questions and they weren't black and white enough for me. hehe. You more than answered some of the questions I was having. :P I'm not caught up in the scans of Nero but it is nice to get some scores over 95 now and then. I have had some pixelation with DVD Shrink but the compression ratio was a little high, so I just went with the movie only mode and that worked pretty good. That is when (high ratio probs) I downloaded DVD-Pro and have gone from there. I like Nero Recode2 for the small compression stuff and the only program I can afford for the big compression stuff is DVD-RB Pro. btw thanks for the excellent reply. lol. Like Creaky there is no way to beat that one.

@cincyrob,
Thanks for the info buddy. You have made leaps and bounds in just 8 months. I have been dabbling in the back-up thing for almost 2 years now. Still haven't figured it out yet. lol.

Now for some scans (lol) :

A decent scan (97) but a little disappointed in the amount of errors/failures. There are a few places where I see some pixelation but could this be caused by a dirty original or a bad rip. What do you think DocTY?

Same iso just a different disc (Ritek-R03-02). Same score of 97 and a little to many errors/failures again.

@DocTY or Creaky,
Do you think PI errors/failures could be the fault of my burning engine (I use Nero 6.6.1.4 or IMGBURN 2.0.0.0), bad rip (DVD Decrypter or DVD FabDecrypter), or a suspect encoding job which I doubt highly? I know by now that the 97 means very little for a quality playback disc (movie). Tell me what you need to see and I will see if I can produce it. Thanks in advance for your help.

@stedaman - you will have never-ending problems if you leave those drives in PIO, so somehow still need to get them DMA'd

@greensman - have a look thru the first few posts in this thread of mine - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193298

Nice one, your example there is a perfect example of not going by just quality scans alone; very pretty so they really only work as eye candy IF they're taken as gospel and in isolation from proper tests such as CRC scans/re-copyability/playback etc. Will have to re-read your post to see if we can figure out where the root cause of your problem is...

i agree w/ creaky, also check out this scan of a movie i made YEARS ago...what do you make of it? do you think it plays? do you think there is any pixellation? check the media i used, from what you hear from all these people on AD, would you doubt Prodisc's ability to hold up "fairly" well after 2 years? considering many people bash Prodisc too... :)

i'll give an answer to all the questions i posed later, i'd like to hear what people think just based on a SCAN~ :)

Nero CD-DVD speed for those who like these scans:

DvdInfoPro for those who prefer these scans:

happy decipherin' :)

docTY

edit: @greensman

those are both nice scans and on good media too~ (both the TY and the Ritek); however, i think the problems with the slight pixellation you are experiencing is NOT due to burning engine or even your ripping programs, i'm thinking it's along the lines of TOO much compression using a program other than dvd-rb pro~ :) am i correct in assuming it was transcoded w/ dvd-shrink/recode rather than ENCODED w/ dvd-rb pro? if my assumption is correct, that is more than likely the reason for the pixellation (unless you chose to "overburn" the Ritek @faster than 8x or the TYG03 @16x) :) i just need the exact details of the procedure you went with to attempt to figure out where the problem MAY reside~ :)

Looks like the TSST drive is a sata drive. So it won't be listed under the ide channels. Look for Serial ATA controller in device manager.
You can do a screens pic in NeroTool>Info Tool of the hardware tab and the configuration tab.

A buddy of mine purchased a Memorex burner about 2 years ago and started having issues with it not burning the new 16x Verbs, it did not even want to burn 16x Memorex, lol. So I recommended they purchase some TY's from supermediastore, which he did. Got 100 of the 8x and they burned fine. So he sent in another order for 200 TY's that were on sale and got 4x, which the burner keeps spitting out as bad media. The drive is no longer supported, has had no fw update for almost 2 yrs. My buddy contacted supermedia who stated they could send back the disks but you got to pay shipping and then 15% restock fee. So I suggested to get a Lite-on burner from Newegg for 32.00 much cheaper to replace the burner then send back the media. Also, why have a burner that will not burn the best media around. Moral of this story, Memorex makes crap media, they also make crap drives too, IMHO :)

nice one Arnie, these days it really is cheap(er) to sometimes just cut your losses and get a new burner; i've done that a few times, sometimes even a after only 1 failed disc, but when a set of discs can cost more than an actual burner, it makes sense to at least try it

Pete,

Depending on the model of the memorex drive, it could be a rebadged lite-on in which case he could crossflash it with some patched lite-on f/w. I've helped several members with their memorex drives by recommending this and they then burned like a new drive. Something to consider or look into.
