LOL

@arniebear + cincyrob + greensman

yes, i'm speaking of the Redbull energy drink, the one that gives you wiiiiiiiiiiiings! LOL, i prefer to mix my grey goose w/ redbull, rather than taking vodka straight; it's more enjoyable for me to get a good buzz rather than become pi$$ drunk shortly after straight vodka~ hehe

@greensman

Mort and Arniebear answered your question much better than i ever could have, they are both much more experienced in dvd-rb than i am~ credit is given to my buddy Mort81 for introducing me to DVD-RB Pro in the first place, and as he stated, i have seen the light thanks to him~ for $30, it's a great price for a great program that i would gladly pay again for the results :) when the compression is not that much, like 85%-99% as you mentioned (actual COMPRESSION is 1%-15%, but u know what i'm talking about), i think Recode2 will do a good job with your project, it's the HIGH compression ones i've done 50%+ that dvd-rb pro + cce/procoder2 really SHINE for ME~ :P

@gus

given that you have a factory built Dell, while it's no slouch as the E6700 cpu that you have is VERY fast, my guess in ETA is on par w/ Mort's guess~ :) it will depend on the size of the output as Mort81 stated, but realistically it will STILL take your system over an hour, closer to an hour and a half by my rough estimates~ as fun as it is enjoying your new toy, you should be aware of what it can actually DO in terms of performance, while i built my own Conroe for thousands less than you paid for yours (no offense meant), it will still run rings around your Dell XPS because of the mods/tweaking/overclocking i've done to it~ i don't mean to put your new purchase down, so please don't take it as such; i'm just sharing with you KNOWLEDGE and FACTS about your system's capabilities. it's a great system you got there, but if you are expecting under 1 hour dvd-rb encode times, keep wishing :)

@greensman

sorry, i missed the part about cross-flashing and stuff in your earlier post~ :) but, as a matter of fact, there IS a firmware available to cross-flash from the 1655 to the 1650, i can't find it right now, but i know my friend catfreak has done it with his own 1655 (yes, u lose the LS capabilities), but i can't speak for the quality if such a flash is performed~ you would have to get catfreak's opinion on that as he's done it and i haven't~

as to the Sony dru-810a, yes, that's a rebadged benq 1640, a great drive and probably the MOST sought after Benq at this point (no longer being manufactured)...i have 3 of them and i get exceptional burns from them~ as to the cross-flash, i believe Tokijin that drops by here in my thread from time to time has done exactly that, cross-flashed from Sony dru-810a to the Benq 1640~ :) can't give ya any tips on that because i have not done it myself, i only have the older Sony dru-710a which is a rebadged Liteon SOHW-1633S, but the Sony firmware BYX5 worked really well for me, so i never bothered cross-flashing it~ just pointing you in the right direction to THOSE that HAVE done it already from experience, they would be the best people to ask for opinions on how the drive has performed prior and post flashing~ :)

Doc,

Thanks for clearing that up on the f/w that IS available to crossflash a benq 1655 to a 1650. I wasn't aware there was such an animal. I stand corrected.

@DocTY,
Thanks for the informative post. If I can talk my wife into letting me spend a C_NOTE I may get 2 of the Sony's. I was only able to get 1 DW-1655 before they disappeared along with the DW-1650. I will post some scans in the next reply. I have burned a cheapy disc, Ritek, and about to burn a TY. I have 'shrunk' the movie with DVD-RB Pro and I am not getting the results that I desire with the backup. I will try to post a Nero log for you and Creaky to peak at as well. That is if I can figure that part out. lol.

@mort81

i wouldn't have known such an animal existed either if catfreak hadn't told me about his experience w/ the 1655 --->1650~ :) when i was looking for it myself, i couldn't find it either~

@greensman

so the output is STILL not up to ur standards w/ dvd-rb pro? may it be that you are burning it onto what you consider a "cheapy" ritek? LOL...i dunno~ :) just trying to make sense of it all...

bring on the scans/nero logs, i'll have a peak at them when u do...but as both creaky and i have stated in the past, there is only so much you can actually "extract out" of a quality scan, it's what YOU see on your end while playing back on your standalone that is the TRUE test of it's quality...97 score or not, it could prove to be anything BUT to the naked eye~

greensman,

Explain what you mean by not getting the desired results with rb/cce and maybe we can help find the fault and a solution. Better yet, explain the problems you are having in detail. Is it only on backups where rb/cce were used as the compression utility or on all or most discs you burn regardless of which app you use to compress?

@DocTY & Mort81,
I am posting the scans and a couple of the logs for dissection. I am still getting the pixelation with all of the burns. I am starting to think it is the power supply that I have. It is a 350W Ultra and yes I know I should of got something like an Antec (550W) or the such. I am running 2 optical drives, 2 HDD (40GB & 160GB), AMD Athlon 64 3200+2000MHz with CPU cooler, and a rear case fan. So she stays cool because of no OC'ing at the moment.

This is a FUJIFILM03 and the 'cheapy' disc I mentioned earlier but a 92 with pixelation none the less. Burned with the TSST SH-S182D

This is the Ritek-R03 burned with the DW-1655 and a 97 with some pixelation.

This is a YUDEN000-T02 with a score of 95 that plays pretty good but still a little pixelation here and there even though it looks like crap with all the yellow.

The best player by far is the TYG03 with a score of 96 and burned with IMGBURN v2.1.0.0.

I think the better media is doing its thing but there is some underlying problem here too. Can it be the drive hasn't learned the media yet? Or something with the power supply? The scans are as you all have said almost not worth looking at but the playback is not where it should be with the program that I am using. DVD-RB Pro and HC19 I think. Not able to get the others yet (CCE or ProCoder2). I would rather add a new optical/HDD before that happens (sorry my input at this point__lol). One thing I will mention is the TSST drive doesn't fluctuate (device buffer) while the DW-1655 buffer does but it still gives pretty good results. The Nero log for the Ritek and the Yuden T02 are what follows, I hope this is what you were needing to look at. Anything else I can add let me know. btw this is the same image X-MEN 3, burned all these different media with the same bloody image, anyone need a backup. J/K!!

@greensman -

from your Ritek & Yuden logs -

Quote:
Recorder: BENQ DVD LS DW1655, Media type: DVD+R
- that firmware doesn't appear to recognise those Yuden's OR the Ritek's. This rang a vague bell, my DW1650's have odd issues with MCC004 discs, they don't seem to be properly supported in the Benq firmware (i think this is still the case in the newest firmware); so i've adapted a snippet from here -
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/338218/1983678 (These are errors in my Nero logs for any MCC004 i use on my BENQ DW1650's. All burns seem fine as i've watched the resulting movies on those discs so i know they're fine. However the burn time at 8x on the MCC004's is usually twice what it should be).

Quote:
Recorder: BENQ DVD DD DW1650, Media type: DVD+R
- same one-liner as you for ALL my MCC004 burns (ie the 1liner without the disc info)..see further down, when firmware supports a given media you would get a 3liner detailing the media info..

errors in my Nero logs -
Quote:
SCSI Exec, HA 1, TA 0, LUN 0, buffer 0x04A50600

HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)

0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x24 0x00
- my burns have actually worked, regardless of these errors in the logs..

here's what my firmware makes of other discs -
Quote:
Recorder: BENQ DVD DD DW1650, Media type: DVD-RW
Disc Manufacturer ID: OPTODI - SCW004
Disc Application Code: 2, Extended Information Indicators: 214
- burnt a 4x rewritable dvd for something i was doing, and it gave the correct detail for that disc

Quote:
Recorder: BENQ DVD DD DW1650, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer ID: MCC 02 - RG20
Disc Application Code: 64, Extended Information Indicators: 193
- one of my olde worlde normal 8x Verbatim discs. this was fine too

Quote:
Recorder: BENQ DVD DD DW1650, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer ID: TYG02 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Extended Information Indicators: 193
- a sexy 8x Verbatim Taiyo Yuden, this was fine too

To summarise, it would appear that MCC004 aren't properly supported in the DW1650's firmware. Also it would seem your Yudens aren't either, in the DW1655 firmware. I'll see if i can find any Nero log info from my YUDEN000T03 burns (can't remember if i have any YUDEN000T02's though) when i get home tonight, to see how they show up in the Nero logs, though i'm sure i posted that somewhere in a similar thread.. (in theory i should have the same issue in my DW1650 firmware for as you seem to have in your DW1655 firmware).

edit- my YUDEN000T03 aren't detected properly; see this multiple recorder burn from Nero -

However the burns work ok and even booktype correctly. This is shoddy of the firmwwre though, can't figure out what's up here, going to update both burners to BCIB or whatever the latest firmware is and do some simulation burns.

greensman,

If you play the compressed/finished folder that you ran through rb/hc on your pc from the hdd, does it look ok in the areas you are experiencing pixelation on your backups?

Have you tried using a different utility to transcode such as shrink or Nero recode?

I'm trying to isolate the problem to either encoding/transcoding or the writing of the disc. It is sounding like it is more in the area of writing to the disc. You might be in the right area refering to PSU. Let us know if they play ok from the hdd.

@Creaky,
OK I understand a little of what you are throwing at me. Now back to a previous question I had: Would it be better to make the DW-1655 a DW-1650? I know it can be done, I just need to find the nescessary tools. The reason for this is the firmware for the DW-1650 seems to be more up to date and useful. I know it has problems with the MCC 004 but I don't have any right now. Just YUDEN000-T02, MCC 003, TYG01, TYG03, and RITEK-R03 media and stop lusting after them Creaky. lol. They are my precious.

EDIT: @Mort81,
I have viewed the HDD image and it seems to be OK. I viewed most of the discs last night, I now know X-MEN 3 pretty well. lol. One thing that I have noticed is the pixelation is not in the same spot every time. I'm not saying that the HDD image is flawless but from the ones that I have made; The Greatest Game Ever Played and X-MEN 3 they seem OK. It's not looking good for the PSU is it?

LOL!.

i've read about the firmware between DW1650 & the DW1655 but like most things i skim-read, ...i've forgotten., i'll leave the other good fellows to answer that one..am off home soon and will be on a mission to see if my Yuden000T03 give the same errors in Nero, ie hopefully edge nearer to seeing if there are actually firmware issues with MCC004/Yuden000T02/Yuden000T03. Have found nothing on cdfreaks website as yet...

greensman,

We better wait untill Doc gets on board in regards to your PSU but it could definately be playing a part. I only have a 350 watt PSU but it is an Antec true power (or whatever they call it).

I haven't had any problems whatsoever with verbatim MCC004 media but I can't remember whether I burnt them with my litey or my benq. I alternate between them all the time when burning but always rip with my benq because it is faster.

Thanks for the help and I look forward to the DocTY getting in here and applying his magic. lol. I know you are busy but I await your input as well Creaky. I may be a little slow returning a reply because of being in and out here at the house. Thanks again to all.

I've seen recent comments about pixelation as a possible indicator of bad burns. I'm assumming poor quality burns can only cause pixelation on playback if the data can not be read off the disc fast enough to keep up with 1x playback. If that is the case, then it seems a Nero benchmark scan will rule out any problems between the playback drive, the disc, and the PC system. If you get a clean speed plot line with no dropouts, the problem can not be the physical disc media and the problem is eleswhere such as video card, software video decoder, poor quality rip, etc. Seeing deviations in the plot don't necessarily indicate a bad disc either as system activity can pause the read back and create a drop in the line. When doing this kind of test, you need to eliminate as much as you can from running during the scan.

@greensman - i'm back from work and (not very) refreshed, hour and half on the road tends to offend. However i'm in front of my own PC's which in itself is enough to make the mood lighten and and the clouds have lifted from my eyes so i'm ready to attack this pesky firmware issue. Just been checking thru my Nero log and it would seem i've found another anomaly...i have no idea which movies were done onto which discs last night so i'll 'identity' a few of them 'til i find the ones i need....back shortly

@Creaky,
They were all the same movie. X-MEN 3 btw.

Here are the benchmarks for the Ritek R03 and the YUDEN000-T02 respectively.

I don't know what these are going to tell you but here they are.

argh, now i'm a tad annoyed, my YUDEN000T03 are giving me funny crap in the Nero log, see my previous reply here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/296925/2443406 i've added the info there. Damn frustrating....

edit- just upgrading firmware on both DW1650's to BCIC (one was at BCDC, the other was BCHC). Simulation burns coming up...not holding my breath though as these problems/anomalies have been in all the firmware revisions i've seen so far. haruumppphhh..

@redice - dunno yet, have flashed the firmware, just about to do some burns, if i can find an MCC004 i'll do one too

edit- no MCC004 left, just MCC003, and they work fine, just YUDEN000T03 to re-test then under the new firmware

edit- YUDEN000T03 have the same problem under BCIC -

Here's a MCC 004 LS dvd I'm fairly sure I burned with my litey. I'll burn one with my benq at a later date and post the scan. Btw this backup played back perfect.

Same disc only scaned with my litey instead of my benq.

Here's a double burn log from Nero using two Benq1650s one with uptodate firmware and the other two behind. Burning a TY TO2 (8X+R)and a O.D. Ritek 03 (8X+R) at 8X. Both were just recognized as +R media. EDIT: Yet Qsuite has reported learning both media.

@greensman - the benchmark results show you are getting very clean and complete reads off the disc. This tells you that the reader has zero problems reading and transfering data at full speed and the system is running other processes that are impacting the disc reads. Running a scandisc will also confirm if there is any problem reading the data off the discs. I'm sure these will show all green blocks.

Something odd that I have not quite figured out is the excessive, bordering obessive, amount of time, energy, and interest in the disc "quality" tests as these really do not answer "Is this burned disc readable?" The benchmark and scandisc tests provide the answer.

After having spent more time than I care to admit on "disc quality" testing myself, I've made my own peace and use them from time to time as an general indicator to assess how well the combination of burner and media are working together. Any significant deviation will get me looking into potential media, drive, or system problems.

Just remember the benchmark and scandisc tests are as valuable as the disc quality tests.
