i liked LG 'til 2 4167B's and a 4163B went south on me; the 4167B's started playing up very early on, the 4163B took a bit longer to go flaky; no more LG for me now, i've kept them to use as dvd-rom drives on a few pc's

Grrr @ creaky.
Well I have an LG (see sig.) and it's a very good drive IMHO. I have had no problems with it. I agree with creaky that the 4167B has a lot of problems but I still stick up for LG :P
lol
EDIT: My next drive will be a Pioneer...

@herrick,
Are you wanting the lightscribe capability or just a BQ DW-1650. I have seen the DW-1650 at several online and B&M stores. Of course they were re-badged but a DW-1650 non-the-less.
At COMPUSA:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_...DVD_RW_Drive#ts
This is one of the re-badges I saw today. I would go into the store to make sure it is the DW-1650. It will say DW1650 on the back of the box. If you can, look up some of the re-badged drives by BQ to see if they are available in some of the B&M stores. Sorry I can't remember some of the other companies right now. I know that TigerDirect has the Sony DRU810A on sale for $45.99+shipping which is the BQ DW-1640. If you decide to purchase a rebadged BQ let me know, I have found a way to cross flash to the 1640, 1650, or 1655 (if the drive has lightscribe).
@any one looking for a way to crossflash their BQ let me know I can at least give you some sites to visit so you can do the same thing if you haven't already figured it out yourself.
@DocTY,
I have successfully crossflashed my 1655 to a 1650 in hopes of somehow overcoming my problem. I'm using the BCFC f/w for now. I may update to the BCIC later depending on the performance of the BCFC f/w.
I will post some scans once the BQ 'learns' the media.

For a LOT of Benq fw and other detailed info on these drives, link over here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92
Interesting post about which firmware seems to offer the best results. Also, quite a bit of info on finding remaining stock of the dw16xx drives

@greensman
Thanks for your time and effert... but I am looking for a light scribe mod. My reasoning is this- it takes about 25-35 min. depending on the image to complete one disk. [using a light scribe for imaging]BUT if you can do 3 at once... the time is not that bad for light scribe--- To be honest I have not used these drives to the fullest but I am really happy with what they produce... Now I may not copy as much as you guys... but because of my love of movies, I do about 13 a week for my collection and for others 5-6. I have done 2 images w/ light scribe at once w/ no problems and w/ my rig doing 3 should not be a problem.

herrick,
No problem just saw a good deal today and wanted to pass it on. Good luck in your search and I hope that you find what you need.
Promise of a 'scan' with updated f/w BCIC on the DW-1650 on a TYG03 no less!!
I know these things are silly but I had to post anyway. I got a 97 out of the box first try with the new f/w and cross-flash. I don't know if this has changed anything as far as burns go but it does look a little better than the burns on the 1655 (at least for me).

B&M = brick and mortar = a physical store you walk into like your local Best Buy store, or Compusa, or Staples, or Office Depot, or Office Max, or Circuit City, or Kmart, or Walmart, Sears, Starbucks, Coffee Bean, etc.. :)
i hope that clarifies things for ya~ :)

This is off topic but anybody have any experience with HP (cmc mag) LS cd-r media? This is all I could find locally. If the cd-r cmags are as bad as dvd cmags I will take them back. Also staples no longer gives out $3.00 vouchers for empty epson inkjet cartridges. They still do on some brands just not epson.

herrick,
Sorry about that should have been more clear. But the responses were priceless. LMAO. Don't mean anything by that just needed a good laugh today, been home most of the day with a sick kid. :(
windtrade,
I haven't had a chance to view these 'new' burns but they do look better, less errors and failures. I'm trying some other ripping methods and btw DVD FabDecrypter has updated to a new version 3.0.2.5 and seems to do a little better job. I am using DVD Shrink and Nero Recode2 for times sake and doing movie only mode to keep compression down to a minimum (@ 5-19%). I will report back about the playback when I get them viewed. Thanks for your help.
cincyrob,
Lemme know when the House of TY is built and I will be there. If it is built we will come!! Man that sounds bad. :)
DocTY,
You really know how to clear it up for us noobs. lol.
creaky,
I knew you were a little perverted. lol. Thanks for looking at the Nero log. Anywhere you can think of to post it for inquiry? Sorry but I have ZERO knowledge of Nero logs.

@greensman - you could start a thread in the Nero forum; if it was Nerovision i'd have figured it out but those Recode errors were too generic to do anything with for me.. some of the good folks there will probably be able to decode a Recode log...

creaky,
Thanks.
Mort81,
I have some TDK CMC Mag CD-R's (don't tell the Doc..hehe) but of course not to impressed. Those are my give-aways....hehe. I like the Ritek (OD brand), FujiFilm (TY CD-R's of course), need to find some more of those, I likes them. :) If you don't mind, what are you needing them for?
As you can tell I don't think much about the C Mag stuff as I give it away. Mostly music for my friends. If I have something important like pics or data I put that on the FujiFilm TY CD-R's, I really trust that media (believe it or not had those before the Doc's influence....hehe). JM2C.

edit: Sorry Mort81 didn't see the LS stuck in there through the kids running around. lol. My response was to a normal disc not LS capable.

cincyrob,
Thanks. I wonder if they will have playback issues over time like their dvd's. I know it's not as big of a deal with cd-r's and audio. I didn't want very many and didn't want to have to pay shipping on some guaranteed to be good media (verbatim). These were too damn expensive for being cmags. $18.00 for 25. Almost as high as quality dvd LS media. Oh well, I'm too lazy to take em back. If they don't last, at least I can say I learned the hard way just like I did with cmc mag dvd media. Experience is the best teacher.
greensman,
I'm primarily going to use them for audio.
