hi all,
no word yet on either the Benq dw-1650 nor the newest Plextor, still waiting just like everyone else... :)
i'm not personally interested in the lightscribe feature, as in the Benq 1655, so, i'm not even considering that drive at all...that new Plextor looks very promising, seems the others have came to the rescue in terms of what it IS or what it ISn'T~ :)
i'm always on the lookout for the newest technology out there, i figured i would put dual Benq's into my new system rig, but, for "variety" and speed, imma put my 2nd trusty ole' Pioneer dvr-109 in my rig...the pure speed on that bad boi is amazing, still my fastest drive to date~ :)
well mort81, Quote: Champaign taste on a beer budget. I like beer just fine. :)
i don't even like the taste of champagne, so, i'm just going to use the drives i have now and WAIT for the Benq & Plextor to become available in a few months...no hurry for me either, i'm "content" as well~ :)
docTy~

of TY's ?
Inkjet printable ?

I would only write at 8-12X max on any disc, anything after that i dont trust, so 18X to me is wasteless except to maybe experiment. It does look like a nice drive tho ^^.
My new Benq 1655 from my RMA shipped last night, it shows being delivered tomorrow somehow, usually takes 3 days but will see. Hopefully it doesn't smell burnt. Storm~

I've only seen 50 packs of TY for the silver inkjet and silver thermal.
Right now though http://supermediastore.com (if in the us) has something I've never seen - 4x white hub printable inkjet -R's TY's for 29.99 - great price! So you may want to go for those.

LOL - just a bit off topic - but I don't think doc or the others would mine (hopefully) ao long as this gets back on topic. Here you go:
please remember its quality not quantity
Newbie to Junior Member -- 25 posts
Junior Member to Member -- 100 posts
Member to Senior Member -- 500 posts
Senior Member to Addict -- 2500 posts
anyone to Moderator -- determination and bribes to admins
anyone to Admin -- decent six-figure (euros or dollars, we are not picky) lump sum to AfterDawn's Swiss bank account
(copied from another thread)
Now for your burn speeds of 8-12x - your using the 'A' list stuff right?

I know about the " please remember its quality not quantity ", I was just curious. The admin part was funny.
And about the comment on the new Plextor 18X drive. Yes Only A list media to do 8-12X if even that. Anything past that I wouldn't trust.
Thanks Storm~

hehe, i trust you got that recommendation from urs truly eh? LOL, yeah, in regards to that new plextor, it looks to be a VERY good drive, naturally, i wouldn't recommend people "overburning" even great quality media (TYs) as fast as it could POSSIBLY burn at, but, being the curious guy that i am, you know who will be overburning "juss to see how good the quality scans are" :P
i think it's safe to say that with that new plextor, continue burning your TYs and Verbatim MCCs @8x, when i get my hands on that drive, i'll see which media out there it can ACTUALLY overburn @18x to~ will report on my tests in a couple months time when the drive is actually released here in the U.S. :)

Yup, pretty much DocTY. :) Also a little bit of common sense. I just cant wait to get Benq 1655 again sometime tomorrow when I wake up, going to bed after I post this. I just hope it doesn't smell burnt again, 12$ shipping back and all the trouble is a pain.
Well im out Storm~

Hi Doc,
There are some Verbatims DVD-R x8 at my local IT shop. They have made in Japan on the outside.
What are the chances that these are TYG02 dye?
Obviously I can't open them up to check the inner ring code but was wondering if there are any other signs to look for?
Cheers in advance.
Should really think of something to put here.

Those Verb's should be legit. The Verb TY's that're made in Japan are made by Taiyo Yuden and carry the TYG02 media code. They're excellent quality media, unfortunately they're not availabe in the U.S. of yet.

@dabig25
Do you have a link you can post for the specs on these? I check videohelp and according to that site and id's from dvdidentifer the -r 8x id as TY.
here's a link:

@tayhigh
You should be good with those Verbs. I think - doc can correct me - the UK has the TY Verbs. Even the verbs made in taiwan are good w/ the mcc id.
@storm1234
No burning smell w/ any of my drive's though none are BenQ. You can always call tech support and see what they say.
Oh and the post above - wasn't directed to you about the quality bit - I just copied and pasted exactly as it was in another thread.

storm1234 - I believe the BenQ DW-1655 come standard with that burnt smell, no extra cost ;). Actually if you check cdfreaks out you'll see a whole thread on this. Seems like almost all of them have that smell. I know mine did. Been burning on it for over a month now and haven't noticed any irregularities. I would say test it for a couple of weeks real hard and see if anything weird is happening. I backed up one of my kids movie's 15 times in a row (a nice use for crap media) with good media mixed in every now and then, checked the scores with Nero, didn't see any issues. So I kept mine, burnt smell and all. Actually couldn't smell it no more once I put it in the case though.

Yeah I believe those Panasonic's are TY's, but I'd wait for conformation from Doc to be 100% sure. Speaking of TY's, I'm to purchase another 50 spindle of Sony TY DVD+R's form ye olde K-Mart. Gotta snatch em while the snatching is good.
@Storm 1234 Don't panic, contact BenQ and see what they say. Awhile ago, when I was looking around for DVD Burners, I came across someone who had a BenQ 1620 and 1640. He mentioned to get the BenQ1620, because sometimes after burning the discs, the 1640 would be hot. I don't know if it's connected to your issues, but it may have some relevance since it's also a BenQ drive. Here's the post:
From LiquidusX:
Quote: get 1620 the 1640 is just as good but has over heating problems. up to you.

I just contacted newegg, and told them about it all. They gave me a RMA # for a refund, even tho that drive you can only do exchanges, gave me a extra 10$ for shipping even tho costs 11.30 but no biggy, and a extra 10$ on my next purchase, so if you do the math I guess it costs me around 4$ all that has happened.
So I will probably get in the line far behind DocTY, and wait for the Benq 1650. Hopefully it wont smell burnt. I'll just wait for Doc, to test it into the ground :) LoL
Thanks for the suggestions and information. Storm~

Here's my first burn to MIJ Sony DVD+R's. I burned TOCA Race Driver 3, a PS2 game. Of course I booktyped it to DVD-ROM with ImgBurn. My drive doesn't support PI/PO scanning, but it's still not bad considering I burned right to the edge.

Hello everyone,
I need some help from you guys regarding Taiyo Yuden Medias. I recently bought 200 discs (50*4). The only problem i have with them is that the serial number is GG000077 on all 200 discs. Does this seem normal to you guys?? I use the dvd identifier and it identifed the disc as TYG02. So Did I bought the authentics or not??

Yep - you got the real deal! The GG bit is around the inner hub and should be there to make sure they're authentic. Different speeds/formats of TY have different codes enscribed. Check out page 1 of this thread for the codes.

hello binkie
Thanks for the quick response. I did checkout the coding thing given out by Doc on the first page. So regardless of how many disc you bought they could have the same number right?? Even if i bought the same batch of 8x in 1000 disc they could have the same number on them and that consider normal right??
thanks

The GG is the TY code on the inner hub, the 0000077 refers to the batch number. Those all came from the same batch.
