@storm1234
The silver thermal ones you need a different printer - thermal printer (quite costly) so really no diff. They're shiny silver.
But you can actually get these cheaper in store when they're running sales. Look for Fuji made in Japan - all id'd as TY. Last time Staples had a sale I picked up 50 for 7.99. They were the pretty color ones :)

hi all,
have responded via PM to both tayhigh & yujenh~ :)
yes, the panasonics are BOTH Taiyo Yuden made (regular or inkjet printables), i have yet to see them made anywhere else but Japan, so, that should not be a problem~ :P
if one DOES see the panasonic's made elsewhere, other than Japan, please let me know...i have yet to see Panasonics outsourced to either Taiwan, China, or Hong Kong or anywhere else for that matter...
@storm1234
seems like everyone else who has owned or purchased a benq 1655 has had that "burnt smell" to it :P, i never owned one, but my own Benq 1640s (3 of them) do NOT have this smell, but as beltline stated, it should NOT be a problem...either way, i see you've sent it back for a refund, that is pretty kind of newegg to give you refund as well as a credit to make up for the shipping/or your next purchae~ :) i'll let ya know once the benq 1650 is available to me and will link you to where you can purchase one too if you choose to do so~ i don't mind being the guinea pig on this one, i will 'test the hell' outta it just to see how good it is once i get it~ :)
as to the TY cd-rs, i did the same thing binkie7 did when Staples had the sale on the Fuji dvd-r/dvd+r 30-pack colored packs, i bought out my local store on the TY made ones from Japan and i too picked up a pack of the fuji cd-rs just to use at a later time...
good luck
docTY~

Hey Doc, how's the quality of Sony MIT CD-R's? They're made by Sony. I was just curious. I have a bunch of PSX backups I wanted to transfer from Memosux to Sony CD-R's. They've been listed as above average to good on all the reviews I've read, but I wanted your input as well. Thanks. Cheers!

Yujenh - you're going to have a hard time finding the BenQ 1640. I searched for about a month looking for one for under $80, and never found one. I believe they quit making it and now make the DW1650 and DW1655 in it's place. I have read a lot of reviews on the 1640 and it is rated as one of the top burners in all the reviews I saw.

The BenQ 1640 is an excellent drive. I doubt you'll find negative reviews from any knowledgeable sites. I have a Sony DRU-810A, which is an OEM BenQ1640. The burn quality is fantastic. I get decent results at 8x and excellent results at 4x. I haven't tried burning at 8x on high grade Taiyo Yuden media yet, so my mixed results could be because of the MIT Sony media. When burning at 4x to Taiyo Yuden, the results are automatic. I get fantastic games/movies with no skips, lags, or playback issues. Whenever I actually do get a coaster with TY, I'll probably shed a silent tear lol. I've got about 15 MIT Sony's, after that I'm never burning to non TY, High Grade Maxell media again. Doc, I have a whole stack of TY's to go through, just to clarify, you've had good results burning at 8x on 8x TY media, correct? Or have you had good results burning at 8x on 16x TY media? I just wanted to get that straight. Cheers!

alsie,
I don't have the silver ty printables but the settings I use for my white ty non hub printables are 43,120.
If you can't find a benq dw1640 but come across a good deal on a 1620 or 1625 they are almost the same drives except the 1640 will burn DL media faster and the 1625 has lightscribe. Any 1 of these 3 drives are better than most imho. I still consider plextor to be the best but benq is definately second best imo and much more affordable. Best bang for the buck.

aabbccdd,
Yeah the retail benqs do work with nero scan disc/quality scan. From what I understand the sony dru-810 which is an oem benq 1640 doesn't give you an accurate score with nero disc quality scans because they don't register any PIF's where the retail benq's do.
For some reason I have never been able to get the scan feature in qsuite to work with my benq dw1620.

dolphin2,
I should have said rebadged instead of oem. Is your 1640 the sony or did you just buy the oem version instead of the retail? You can buy the benq oem version, they just don't say benq on the front and usually don't come with as much software or an IDE cable. In some cases oem drives will have different f/w.

I bought the OEM version of the 1640. Your right. I got no cables (didn't need them anyways) and an OEM version of Nero. Didn't even get the QSuite software CD. Had to download it all. Which was OK as most of the CD's you get with hardware are outdated.

8x on 8x TYs and 8x on 16x TYs...my burns are best @8x on pretty much all the media i use..i burn @8x on my Verb MCC003/MCC004 as well~ straight answer~ :)
as the cd-rs, i don't have much experience with cd-r burning, i'll just ASSUME the Sony cd-r are decent, never tried them before to be honest with ya~ :)
cheers
docTy~
@alsie
i don't burn onto printables anymore, as mort81 stated, those settings seem about right, binkie7 also has a lot more printable TY experience than me...she could also give you a recommendation as to what SHE uses for her settings on the silver inkjet printable TYs...alkohol could too~ :)
@yujenh
yes, i would highly recommend the Benq 1640 drive, it's one of my top burners, yes beltline is correct in that they NO LONGER MANUFACTURER them anymore, so it's gonna be a google search to find the best price for them, IF IN FACT they don't send you the much less sought after Dq60 as a substitute/replacement... good luck, i would just personally wait for the Benq dw-1650 rather than hoping to find the 1640, as the risk of various companies sending you the DQ60 is NOT worth the chance in my opinion, but hey, you might get lucky~ :)
have a good one all~

go with the Benq 1650, if you do, you will most likely get it before i do...please link me as i will pick one up too, i had a pre-order from excaliberpc, but it seems that one will NOT go through (i don't know yet as they discontinued it from their website, but have NOT sent me an email as to whether they are going to honor my pre-order or not...they already have my CC info and shipping info, but my card has NOT been charged yet) :)
good luck
docTY~
edit: i found the Benq 1650 from computerhq, it seems that they don't have it in stock yet either, this was the exact same situation as excaliberpc...you could add it to the cart, but availability was "NO" and it is not in stock...i wonder if they will discontinue this listing on their website too...i dunno~ :)

Does anybody know why benq discontinued the 1640? Seemed like a very popular drive and were selling like hotcakes.

Go for it man. Seriously, I mean it's (BenQ 1650) only $60.42 (55.67 + 4.85 = 60.42, including shipping), this is a great price.
I know that I'll be getting one of the new BenQ for sure when my DRU710A is going down south, but not yet. I've had my DRU710A (a rebadged SOHW 1633S) since November 2004 and it is still "ripping & burning" boldly like new. This thing is burning mad like King Kong vs T-Rex, awesome... that's all I can say. Not to mention that it "book type" or change the "bitsetting" from any DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL into DVD-ROM flawlessly.
