Joe, you win the prize. Out of all these people who have responded, you are the ONLY one who has read my problem and got it right! Except, it's an R-130, not an R-120.
Originally posted by JoeRyan: 1) The external Plextor drive is connected to a USB 1.1 port instead of USB 2.0. This happens very often, especially when computer manufacturers put the USB 2.0 ports in the back of the computer and cheaper USB 1.1 ports on the more easily accessible front panel. If a regular DVD does play on the Plextor, then that is not the problem.
My Plextor is connected via what's called FireWire.
Originally posted by JoeRyan:
2) The format of the DVD-R discs on the Samsung. DVD-Video IS a format. It is the standard format specified for fixed-length DVDs such as movie DVDs or recordable DVDs that have a defined beginning and end. This format specifies that the total capacity of the file to be written is recorded before recording the file. The other video format is DVD-VR, which came after DVD-Video when set-to recorders were introduced. This format is the other option used for set-top recorders where recordings are made of TV programs that have no pre-determined capacity. Finalizing is required for both DVD-Video and DVD-VR formats so that the lead-outs are written, but DVD-VR also writes the final capacity at this time.
You have to choose either DVD-Video or DVD-VR formats when you begin recording. If you select a fixed time, such as XP 1-hour quality or SP 2-hour capacity, that fixes the capacity into the DVD-Video format. If you do not specify a time setting, the recorder may be selecting DVD-VR format instead. In that case you may not have video playback software on your computer that recognizes the DVD-VR format.
I understand that part. In fact, as I was trying to explain to someone else, with DVD-Rs I only have one choice, and that is DVD-Video, and this is the reason I bought them. My Samsung manual only lets me choose formats if I were using DVD-RW. To quote the manual,
"DVD-R: Formatting the DVD is unnecessary and only Video Mode recording is supported." So, that rules any VR business out, doesn't it? :-)
Originally posted by JoeRyan: ...if you had been using discs other than TY, most people would have blamed the other brands right away as the cause of the problem.)
The Plextor 708 should be able to play a disc of any speed rating after it has been recorded if: 1) the recording is good; 2) the recording meets the format requirements; 3) playback software supports the format on the disc; and 4) the data are transferred from the external drive to the computer software at a rate that can support steady playback. The speed rating of the disc does not matter after it has been recorded. (Every 16X disc I have checked will work at 1X recording speeds on most set-top recorders.)
You get another prize, Joe. This is what no other "guru" would tell me. Although, on principle, I still feel Supermediastore.com is commiting fraud by passing their discs off as something other that what is on my invoice, and I will write to them about that, I'm heartened to know that at least these 75 or so discs I've got left are still usable. The box to my Plextor says 8X is the max, but I've put unrecorded blanks in there and they spin up OK! It really is confusing... CDs were never this hard-to-figure, or this unreliable, for that matter!
So anything else you can help me try to figure it out would be helpful. Thank you again for understanding the problem and giving me useful, easy-to-understand suggestions!
The latest wrinkle was that last night it refused to load any of my Netflix, but had no problem reading the discs I'd burned on it. I just don't know what's going on with it! If it's all DVD-Video, shouldn't it play?! On anything?! This is why it was necessary to rule out the discs themselves as the problem, and why I chose this thread. Thanks for understanding this.
Interestingly, I hooked my old reliable JVC DVD player, which had no problem whatsoever with the Netflix, but refuses to play the discs the Samsung burnt, so as you can well imagine, I've been a tad frustrated! I'm about ready to go back to LPs and videotape! Analog rules! LOL
Anyway, thanks again for your help and understanding.

I pulled the disk info from a finalized disk from my Samsung R-120, looked over the specs and it is close to your R-130, the disk is a Verbatim DVD-R 16X, and it will play on all of my standalone players in the house and in the wife's mini-van.

Just an FYI for you Brits...
I was in Sainsburys this morning and I was walking along and noticed they're selling Verbatim DVD+R 16x spindles of 25 for £7. I didn't buy any, but thought I'd pass it on. And incase you don't know, these will code out as YUDEN000T03. Us Brits get sexy Verbatim TY!!! :-D
Lol, they might not have them everywhere though... :)

@MsIrisMG,
As I stated in a previous post I was just trying to cover some bases before the 'gurus' started helping and then asking questions themselves. As said by many here in this thread and throughout aD help is given freely and at no charge so there may be mistakes or misunderstandings occasionally. I like many of the rest of the guys didn't notice the stand alone DVD recorder Samsung DVD-R130. Most of the video help here consists of internal/external computer DVD burners and the software that is used.
Not speaking for anyone else in this thread or aD! I don't appreciate the way you are giving out "PRIZES" for reading or understanding what you are asking. Although it was very vague at first and you could have responded by saying that the machine you were talking about was a stand alone recorder. btw JoeRyan missed the model number so he didn't get it all right either. He is much more knowledgeable on many things than most of us but he doesn't have the time to answer every inquiry so we (some of the others here at aD) try to help the best way we can. We will never be right all the time or read between the lines on everything we respond to.
I, like yourself, am basically a n00b and don't give much input most of the time because I think there are much more informed and intelligent members here that have more/most of the answers. Please don't think I'm getting on my soap box but you have searched out other avenues. The link follows:
http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php...t=317969][/url]
I did some other research on your DVD-R130 and it seems that there may be other problems with it. The most prevalent thing was people's displeasure with the machine itself. I think there are many that have experienced the same/similar problems. I would consider taking the machine back and getting another one or using the credit for a useful machine.
BTW you still haven't given the code of the discs you are using (that I could find) but I still think the discs you have are good. I'm assuming the 'netflix' discs you are trying to play are movies from the service "NETFLIX" provides. If this is the case you need to have your machine worked on or as I said earlier, replaced.
Please in the future try and understand that we don't have all the answers and are not perfect either. Talking down to us or making condescending remarks because you didn't get the perfect answer does nothing but offend people. At least it did me.
As you can tell I still am trying to help you with your problem so please feel free to respond or start another thread so more people will get involved to solve your problem. Thanks for searching out help on this website and in particular this thread. This thread is and always will be about media, TY as a focus.

Yeah dang ye sure are blessed on them SEXY verbs. greensman nicely put and agree more help would've been rendered with a little bit more info and different thread other than a media thread. Yes this thread covers a wide base of topics with some very extremely knowledgeable people that don't look for prizes or talk down to in this family. Maybe some knowledgeable ones go over our heads sometimes but when asked come down to laymans terms that even I can understand [Hiya JoeRyan ].No meaness intended buddy you have a very vast knowledge in media I appreciate. But when you look through this thread with members that started are pretty much still here with new ones picked up along the way that were interpreted in the wrong way and are an asset to this thread.It's one of the first threads I read day and night and I've come to value it like a good friends club.

I have been reading all the posts on yuden value from supermedia store. bought a bunch of them. have a plex 716a and a benq 1650 and a couple of older pioneers. have been using shrink and decrypter as well as clone dvd2. I can set the recording speed on shrink and decrypter but can't figure out how to ser the recording speed on clone or nero; using nero6 as I hate Nero 7 which all want to burn at max so the plex and the benq want to burn at 16x. is there a way I can control this or am I ok just leaving it alone. haven't had any problems yet?

In Clone DVD the last window before the burn starts,there's a little box that sits on top of the DVD Writer window where you select burners called "preferred speed" small and easily missed.
In Nero 6 Recode it's also in the burn settings window before the burn called "writing speed" it's probably set at maximum. In Nero Express it's in the first windo bottomish and also called "writing speed"

@bluewee,
Well, i didnt know the reason why you have to choose those
white surface. Howver the price is really high much highter then
the ones i am getting. I dont know if you use those for special
purpose or what. If you only need it for regular burning
the ones i am recommending should be fine, those were regular
TYG02 and that what most of people use.
