Keep in mind the buffalo f/w only works with pioneer 109's and 110's. All other pioneer owners are SOL in regards to bitsetting. Thats why when I do buy another dvdrw drive it will be bitsetting ready. Both my litey and benq do support bitsetting and have their own booktype utilities. I'll most likely go with another benq or a plex when the need arises.

MLB 2006: The Show is a really good game. I'm biased towards 989 studios, but they did an excellent job with this game. The graphics are sweet, gameplay is simple for novices, and advanced enough to satisfy video baseball vets. Very realistic MLB experience, I doubt EA or anybody else will top it this as far as baseball sims. I highly recommend it. I'm torn... do I use my Sony Branded MIJ TY DVD+R's to burn PS2 games, or my TYG02's that've served me so well? Decisions decisions... oh well I'm on spring break. I think I'll give the Sony DVD+R's a go at backing up games for awhile. I like the white surface, it's great for writing on. Plus I want some more data to evaluate the overall perforamance of the TY DVD+R's booktyped to DVD-ROM vs DVD-R's. Everybody says DVD+R's are better, I want to see for myself. Cheers!

VERY good info found here by 95MAX, all credit goes to him for this terrific info and find:
Quote:
I saw this thread over at CD Freaks and thought I'd give it a try. It says that you can identify the Sony MIJ 8X DVD-R 50 packs of TY's (TYG02), that have surfaced recently by checking the shape of the top spacer. If it is octagonal shaped it is TY media and if it is round it is Sony media. I don't have a Circuit City near me so I went to Staples to see if I could get them to PM Circuit City's sale price of $14.99. Well they didn't have pack with the octagonal spacers there, so I headed over to Wal-mart.

I got to Wal-mart and there they were....50 packs of -R's with the octagonal spacers. Regular price was $25 but got them for $14.99 with the PM.

I opened up the 50 pack and checked the inner ring code and it was GG000xxx. Yeah TY's....checked the media code and they are TYG02's.
I think this spacer thing works!!! Here is the link
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1292991&postcount=105
on the Sony 8x DVD-R MIJ spindles locally, look for the "octagon" spacer at the top to get the TYG02s (TYs)...nicely done 95MAX~~ :)

Another tell tale sign (at least for the MIJ Sony TY DVD+R's, is that accucore isn't printed on the discs themselves. It'll say accucore on the package, but not on the disc. That held for both the spindles of TY Sony DVD+R's I bought, of course maybe all the Sony DVD+R's don't have accucore on them. Either way that's good info Doc. Are the MIJ Sony TY DVD+R's gaurunteed to be Yuden000-TO2? I've been playing with them recently for burning PS2 games. They work great of course and I "acquired" the most recent version of Alcohol 120% which can auto booktype to DVD-ROM a la Nero, so that's pretty sweet. I always liked Alcohol 120% for ripping scratched discs and burning. It was the first program I really got familiar with, so it's got a special place in my heart lol. Anyway, it's fun playing with DVD+R's, I love the shiny non branded TYG02's, but I needed a change. Cheers!

so far, yes, pretty much 100%, i have yet to purchase a spindle myself nor hear of anyone receiving anything else otherwise under the Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ spindles~ :)

interesting that you mention the "accucore" thing, on the NEWER Sony 8x DVD+R (the ones with the octagonal spacer at the top) MIJ spindles, it DOES say "accucore" on the disc itself, reason i mention this is that i have both the "older" Sony 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s WITHOUT the "accucore" on the disc and a few of the "newer" Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ YUDEN000T02s WITH the "accucore" written right on the top white surface~ :)

the quality of BOTH the YUDEN000T02s is identical, just different "batches" of them and Sony wanted to imprint their "accucore" technology so everyone knows on their newer media~ :)

Okay Mort 81, Doc TY and other experts, I require some assistance. This is a post from someone in the PS2 section. I feel I rebutted him well (and quite diplomatically), but I could use some expert opinions. Is any of this true? It looks like complete horse manure from my vantage point. Here's the thread if you'd like to check it out: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/308727

> How am I misleading people?

With sentences like these ones:

"You will only get away with this on quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim,
not crap media like CMC Mag."

For sure CMC Magnetics isnt the best manufacturer out there, but they produce DVDs
for a lot of brands, including Verbatim, and in the end Verbatim is the one who set
the quality controls to be sure the media is sold under its brand is good enough.
Not to mention CMCMag is the 2nd DVD producer of the world, right after Ritek.

"The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality"

Not for sure!!! For two reasons:

1. Media are faked easily (there are hundreds of fakes out there).
2. Two media with the same ID gives DIFFERENT results!!! For example: RitekG04,
Ritek Purple Branded disc are marvellous (some of the best DVDs I've tested),
but RitekG04 coming from Ridisc, or Ridata are far from Purple's quality.

"No name media can't be good. I bet it's made in India or Singpore or something"

What happen with Sinpagur??? Its the only place where TRUE MCC are manufactured!!! To be
sincere, I always search for Verbatim Made in Singapur if Made in Japan is not
avalaible.

> I never said Verb makes their own media. Btw they don't outsource to CMC Mag
> anymore. All verb's are back to high quality MCC dyes. There may be some CMC Mag
> Verb's still floating around from a couple years ago, but all current verbs
> should code as MCC or MKM (Dual Layer). C. Very few manufacturers make their own

Well, You are wrong. In the present we can find these Verbatim products:

1. Verbatim Made In Japan, Media code TY or YUDEN these are genuide Taiyo
Yuden. Though the quality has been decreased on 16x TY media (TYG03 cannot be compared
with MCC04, for example), they are TY, and are nice media.
2. Verbatim Made in Singapur, Media code MCC... there are genuine Mitsubishi stuff, nice
DVDs.
3. Verbatim Made in Taiwan, Media code MCC, manufactured by CMC Magnetics... they are NOT
Mitsubishi, but CMC Mag, with MC changed to MCC.
4. Verbatim Made in China, Media code MCC, manufactured by NOONE KNOWS... There are not clues
of who are producing those discs.
5. Verbatim Made in India, Media code MCC, manufactured by Maer Boser India.
6. Verbatim Made in Taiwan, Media code CMC MAG, manufactured by CMC Mag (Verbatim Pearl White).

> If it's an in depth media debate you want, bring it on. Cheers!

Nope, I cant discuss... As you can see I cannot explain as clear as I want in english... :-)

106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

I think some of this might not work for 7KiNgPiN7, as I think he is in UK(he could be in London,Ohio, or London, Minnesota, but but most likely not, as he says buy in the "shop", and not buy in the "store"!:~)):

All I found about is a store called "Makro", if you want to buy in the store. Maybe someone from UK can help you more. There you can buy the Verbs made by TY. here is a thread you might want to check:

interesting "debate" you had there tokijin :)

sorry, been away for a minute, but i saw that mort81 stepped in to clarify for ya in that thread~ :P

no real reason to argue with him, i don't think he meant any harm, just typical "regurgitation" of info that MOST people read from the various forums online and spit back out for the sake of argument~

happens ALL the time here on AfterDawn as well, u don't know how many threads i've seen with : "i read somewhere that blah blah blah, can't find it at this moment but it was reliable source"...what they FORGET to mention is that the "article" or "thread" they were getting their info from was from 2 years ago and they don't take into consideration that MUCH has changed since then...

also, as you probably deal with it more than i do, is the ever popular "i know it's not the media, i used it before with no problems...blah blah blah..my friend said it was good and he's the expert on blank dvds...he recommends TDK and he has over 50 backups on them" ....ROIGHTTTTTTTT LOL

some people are just lacking the tried and tested "experience" to justify what they say or "claim" on here...don't let it get the best of ya...i've dealt with a few "hard-headed" so-called media guys before that would NOT budge on their stance on media, despite link after link after link from scientific experiments, countless facts of evidence from experience PROVING them wrong, they will never admit they are wrong...stubborn people and their stubborn ways...

as ddp says, teach and learn...i still learn a thing or 2 about media even to this day...while i've tried pretty much EVERY kind of media/manufacturer out there available in the U.S. at some point or another, once in a blue moon will a new manufacturer suddenly "pop up" and on the rare occasion a MID code is unfamiliar to me, i'll learn about it and go by the recommendations of my TRUSTED collegues who HAVE used said media before...

i don't like confrontation as much as the next person, but i've learned in my time here, if i let it get to me, i wouldn't be here to help anyone any longer...and THAT my friend is what keeps me coming back here almost every day...to HELP someone on here and get a "thanks" or "your help is appreciated...thank you" is a reward in and of it's own~ :)

some days i wonder wtf am i doing here? so i take a few days off and come back to see my inbox FLOODED with PM's regarding media suggestions, problems with media, various burners that i own/bitsetting, is this true with TY questions...etc...to make me realize that my assistance in the dvd media forums WAS appreciated and that some people turn to me via PM because they TRUST my advice/opinion...that says a lot to me

keep up the good work buddy, ur help is appreciated by me and many others, it's only a not-so-frequent-few that rattle the chains a bit from time to time that we just have to disregard and let go...

docTY~

Oh god..I cant believe people would actually use memorex. I just converted by buddy to verbatims and MIJ Sony's..after he was complainiing to me that his DVD's were not working anymore after 3 months. I looked and saw he was using memorex. I even tried it on my computer and the movie never played. I also tried to burn a memorex once and an error message popped up. Why do people waste their money on crap?? and memorex is usually more expensive too..

P.S I think my burner is memorex proof..a memorex DVD goes in there and it automatically says NO!!!

Yeah in that particular thread, I rebutted with "ask anybody who's switched to Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim if they're going back to CMC Mag?" Anyway yeah thanks for the support and encouragement. I could tell his info was outdated, even without you guy's encyclopedic knowledge of media. Mort 81's got Verb's covered, and well we all know who covers the TY's. :)

On an actual media related note, all has gone well with Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's booktyped to DVD-ROM. They work equally well with my PS2 as the DVD-R's. I was paranoid at first that somehow they were different from unbranded TY media. I've noticed I get higher max PIE's when burning a smaller disc, like 1 to 2GB's produces more PIE's than burning to the edge of the disc with TY's. You guys ever notice anything like that? Cheers!

Just my 2 cents on media. AD did not convert me or any other forum like this. I was using Taiyo Yuden & Verbs months before I found aD. How did I figure it out? The old fashion way - trial & error. A friend started me with Princo but did turn me on to supermediastore.com. Well we all know how Princo is - didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out this was crap. Firmware update or not. Tried several more brands w/ various manufacturers and buying from ebay. That didn't pan out either. Then onto supermediastore and Ritek - that worked for awhile until I had a few burn failures. Next in line was TY & Verb - haven't looked back since. Then I come here and see 'Help Memorex won't burn!' Been there done that unfortunately!
I'll stick with what works now matter how good the other agruement may sound.
