Ya this is the second time for me in 2 mths...I work with homeless and the issues that come along with it, so I never get away from the sickness-Here in washington the sun is just coming out and it sucks having a chest cold in the heat- BUT does not slow me down to long LOL got to get my burn on...

I have a question. Was copying a data disc & left Nero's speed set to maximum by mistake instead of selecting 8x for the TYG02 media (-R) that I was burning to. 8x media & my Plextor 716-A with the latest firmware hit 12x!! Is this rare (maybe I had a really good premiem grade disc) or is 12x common with this 8x TY media?

I just wondered as the 760-A can hit 18x with some 16x media...

Yep those 8x Taiyo Yunden came be overburned to 12x - though not all drives will do it.
Like LiteOn has smartburn that Nero uses. When I have this checked 8x is the max it will give.

It really depends on your f/w. I would assume since I don't have one of the Plextor's that the f/w has allowed the 8X TY to be "overburned" at 12X. Not uncommon, the Lite-Ons will do it too. From now on I would choose nothing higher than 8X on the 8X media. jm2c on that. :)

Rule of thumb on media is to record at half of the max rated speed but I think if you have 8X media go ahead and do it at 8X. btw Verb 8X DVD+R media will do the same thing, that is 12X recording. ;) Of course all assuming that your drive will accommodate the criteria. ;)

Benq's- at lest the 1655s have the "smart burn" also but call it "overspeed" BUT like brother Greensman stated half the rated burn speed is best. [as a rule of thumb that is...] Ive burned higher with good burns but the way the files are in some DVDs makes it hard to always get good burns... Heres one for twisting your head- burned king kong on a DL disk... No problems right! so I am bored and copy the same move [3+hrs] to a TY TYGO2 w/ 40+ % ratio compression and it comes out perfect [ on my 36 in analog TV]- BUT then sometime I burn a movie w/ 22% compression and you can see artifacts and the thing is garbage...dont figure other then they way the files are I guess...
