Slap me and call me silly but I haven't found a DVD that a Sharpie wouldn't write on yet. :)
NOW on the labels, not NO but ..... oh you get the drift. lol. Just think about your ceiling fan before you balance it with that little bitty weight. Labels do the same thing to DVD's IMO. :P

believe me, im suprised as much as you guys that regular sharpies dont write on this.
its not that they dont write at all, they do. just write like they are going dry, thin and faint. but theres nothing wrong with the markers. GRR!

Did some quick research and may not completely know what media you're talking about. I think that I have the discs you are talking about in TYG02 and TYG03. Sharpie brand markers label the discs just fine and have zero problems. If you could link me (us) to what you are trying to write on it may help. Just making the best effort to assist you and keep you from ordering paper labels. :)

These are the ones that I have and the 16X too. :)

OK,
Here's what I think is going on. You may check to see if you have official Sharpie pens. LOL. That is the ONLY thing that I can think of at this time that would cause the problems you are talking about. herrick uses the media you are "linking" too and I use the same thing as well and have zero problems as I've said before. :)
Sharpie specific CD/DVD pens: http://www.sharpie.com/enUS/Product/Shar...ent_Marker.html
Regular Sharpies: http://www.sharpie.com/enUS/Product/Shar...ent_Marker.html
I can't be any more specific than the examples above. I know for sure that some "permanent" markers DO NOT work on CD/DVD discs. :)
Since we have drifted somewhat off topic even tho we intend to mark on TY's I can't add any more than I have already. ;)
Good luck with your DVD labeling endeavor. :)

It's your Sharpie...get a new one...
The Silver Lacquer Finish can be written on...however if your pen is not new...it will write faint on disc...while still writing fine on paper...
I know from experience...burned close to a thousand of the TY Lacquer Finishes...

that might have something to do with it. I take it the thermal is as in thermal printables. I've never used any so I don't know.

As far as writing on discs go, some surfaces work better than others with Sharpies, and I personally use the ultra fine tip, since they take up the least space when writing so I can fit a fair bit of information on the surface. When I'm having a difficult time getting it to write, I try spinning the pen in my hand until I find an "edge" of the pen that writes well, and once I've got a solid line, the rest of the labeling goes without a hitch. You might give that a try. I've tried touching the tip to my tongue before, also, but that didn't seem to do any good.

The Silver Thermal Lacquer Finish TY's are not printable...I do not know why they call them thermals...thermal usually refers to being printable...
I am assuming that the thermal refers in this case...to the manufacturing process...

Lp531,
aye aye. I'm a verb man. I would think that a genuine sharpie would even write on a thermal printable too.

The Thermal Printables are very easy to write on...
The TY Silver Thermal Lacquer finish is much more difficult to write on cleanly...then other media's I have used...
If the pen is not new...the ink tends to bead on the surface...
They also take forever to dry...(10 sec)...compared to other media...
All I ever use is the Permanent Fine Point Sharpies...I have never used the CD/DVD markers...
Added:
Once the Ink Drys...The Sharpie marked TY's labeling is as permanent...and durable as any disc finish I have used...

Thermal printable discs are designed to be printed in a professional (or at least expensive--starting at $3,000) printer that uses a wax impregnated ribbon that is melted by a heated print head as it passes over the disc. The thermal surface is not typically good for ink-based pens and terrible for ink-jet printing because the surface has to be designed for a good grip on melted wax. Ink-jet printable surfaces are polymeric coatings that absorb the ink and swell slightly until the water carrier evaporates. Thermal surfaces are not absorbant although there have been samples of discs designed for both thermal and ink-jet. They were not very good at either, so manufacturers went back to specializing surface treatments for either thermal or

The Sharpies I've been using are the mini size. I got 8 of them in a package. They are fine point but not as fine as a pen. Writes great on TY silver matte, Verb white inkjet printable & any store brand of CDR I've bought. Maxell, Fuji and Ativa plus Sony.
