those silver ty's can be tricky to write on, I do use sharpie ultra thin, and with the silver ty's especially I keep a scrap paper close by cause so many times the sharpie wont take, than I just scrabble on the paper till it writes than quickly go to the disc and it works every time.

A computer lock-up involves a conflict in commands that the drive does not understand and the software cannot interpret. I have not experienced this with blank discs--the drive usually ignores a disc it does not understand, claims that it is "invalid" or "illegal" if it does not recognize the MID code, or simply attempts to use the default power strategy (unless it is programmed to read the field ID codes and combine that with Optical Power Calibration to select an estimate of a better write strategy) with varying results. Most of the lock-ups I have experienced have been with recorded discs, particularly with rewritable discs, whose lead-ins are illegible because of a poor match of laser power and disc response. The drive cannot read the disc information in order to determine what to do, what software to open, or what kind of disc it is holding. It balks, and that locks everything up unless one reboots and hits the eject key right after booting up or attempts to insert the emergency tray opening tool into the tiny hole in the front of the drive.
There can be manufacturing flaws in the lead-in section of a blank disc that can do the same thing to a disc that has not been recorded. This may be due to a flaw in the pressing (microscopic dust that gets between the polycarbonate and the stamper), a flaw in the dye coating, or a flaw in the sputtering process. These flaws can cause anything from minor spikes in errors to fatal recordings if they occur anywhere in the data section of the disc; but they can lock everything up if they occur right at the start in the ATIP section for a CD-R or the lead-in for a DVD recordable disc.

Thanks JoeRyan I was grtting this with fresh blank discs especialy if I tried to Id them. But errors and illegal disc were through out this batch. Thanks again Chris

Hello guys,
The IO magic external burner turned out to be
a pioneer dvr-14k. its 8x slim external dvd burner.
Is anybody familiar with this model at all?? I would think
this should be similar to the a09 or dvr 109 or something like that.
Those shouldnt be too bad right??

Yujenh,
The only member that I can remember with a DVR-109 is docTY and he only visits now and then BUT he likes it if that helps. :) I have the DVR-112L and love it. It writes/burns great and will read that slab of bologna you thro in it. LOL. I like the Pioneers but you have to remember they aren't known for scanning. Also if you are able to flash it to a "Pioneer" you will have to d/l one of the BUFFALO f/w's to enable the booktyping abilities. ;) Something to think about if you're interested. :)

update time!
i've been using ultra fine sharpies and they have been working QUITE nicely.
also the ty's have been preforming remarkably. they are definently the fastest 8x i have burn on yet. burned over 20 so far and not a single Coaster :)
herrick- i have done a LOT of burning. thats why i have a decent knowledge (that and my time spent on ad :) ) on the topic for my age.
Yujenh- pioneers have never failed me in the past, im sure it's quite a good drive but i have never used that specific model

hehe, time flies when you bored outta your mind.
anyways, i have several older Pioneer dvr-109s, i've crossflashed all of them w/ the Buffalo 8.58 firmware to enable bitsetting on DVD+R media~ it just happens to one of MY fastest ripping drives as well with the speedlock disabled. :)
firmware hasn't been updated in AGES (and more than likely WON'T be in the future), but so far so good, it burns properly to 16x Verbs and TYs with no issues w/ Buffalo firmware.
it's a good drive and im happy with it and it's still running strong...if you need help in crossflashing PM me, or read up on it via google :)...here is the link for the dvr-109 + buffalo firmware:
