Thxalot ... but unfortunately i knew all that , and still doesn't work.
And because you said that 23,976 is the same with 24000/1001 i say that is not.
Why am i saying that so firmly ?
Because i've created an AVCHD file with both fps's and the 24000/1001 was SO out of sync , but the 23,976 was just a few miliseconds ...
And yes the audio is in perfect sync with the video for about 7 gigs (2/3 of movie).

Hi,

I'm new to this in general but have been trying for a few days now to play a .mkv file on my ps3 (link below) its only a 20mb chunk that ive been working on of the full file.

http://www.mediafire.com/?nbylzchmtkb

I've tried various things with some luck:
mkv2vob doesnt work - "error transcoding", also tried repacking the mkv
tsmuxer makes the file, but it doesn't play on ps3 (but does on pc)
mp4box makes the file, it plays on ps3 but with no video (works on pc)
For each of these I have tried changing the level of the AVC to 4.1 and reference frames to less than 9 with h264info but still the same results.
The only thing that has worked so far is re-encoding using SUPER, which I had to do on a smaller chunk of the file as I have a slow pc, and re-encoding the whole thing would take far too much time.
In any case there must be a way to get this working in a reasonable amount of time - if not, what's the problem?

heres some of the info from the .mkv file:

@ neuro99

Your mkv needs a lot of work to play on the PS3. The video's ref frames, and possibly B frames are too high. Simply changing this with h264info will not do the trick, so the video needs to be recoded.

The audio is .AAC, and subs are .ASS, both are not compatible with tsMuxeR. I suggest demuxing with mkvextractGUI (all audio and subtitles streams) convert with eac3to to 2 channel AC3 @ 192 kb/s (this will work, I tested) and using Subtitle Workshop to convert the ASS subs to SRT (Subrip) subtitles (this will also work, tested on a different video).

Mux all of the new streams (recoded video, new AC3 audio, and SRT subs with a 64 pixel offset-tsMuxeR Subtitle Setting) and you should be good to go.

Sorry if this is not what you were looking for. Good luck.

odin24,

Thanks for the help - really appreciate it.

The subtitles have been a problem I opened the .ass file with subtitle workshop and just saved as .srt (couldn't find any option to convert available). In tsMuxer I get an error - "Non standart fps value do not supported for PGS streams" with the .srt subtitles.

edit: there are two .ass subtitles in the mkv, both english, not sure if only one is needed (if so which one?) or they have to be combined in some way?

The audio recoding is OK, but what do you recommend to recode the video in as little time as possible with least loss in quality?

Thanks again

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that PGS error. You might not be satisfied with this but setting the FPS to 30000/1001 (29.97) in tsMuxeR will do the trick, however the audio may become slightly out of sync near the end of the episode... I cannot say for sure though. However the subs should be fine, as long as you set the FPS in Sub Workshop to 30 before loading your ASS file it should stay in sync.

As for recoding the video, I always use MeGUI/AviSynth with at least a decent profile, that will set the Ref frames and Bframes automatically, geared towards Blu-ray playback. The latest build of MeGUI has all of the profiles you'll need. For a good recode with literally no quality loss I'd use the SA_Blu-Ray_Fast profile (in MeGUI). This one will take maybe 4-6 hours on a 2 hour movie, since you're doing anime it shouldn't take nearly as long. The profile I mentioned is the faster of the better profiles.

If you're not familiar with MeGUI/AviSynth here is a good tutorial and download that should help you through step by step.

It's at the beginning of this thread linked, which is very informative as well.

Halp!

Is anyone else seeing this issue :

I have a few AVCHD discs that I've muxed together from bluray compatible h264 video and either DTS audio or dolby digital .ac3 audio.

I play these AVCHD movies on my PS3.

They have been playing flawlessly on firmware 2.52.

Recently updated to firmware 2.53, and now I'm seeing an issue.

Movies with DTS audio play perfectly.
Movies with Dolbly Digital audio...the audio is really really low. Here's the strange thing. If I fast forward at 1.5x realtime, I can hear the audio (but obviously fast) at a normal volume, but I hit play and the audio is super low again. I have to turn up the volume on my reciever WAY up to hear the audio.

I output the audio using an optical cable. Audio is output via bitstream.

Please please, anyone else seeing this issue?

If you don't have the correct directshow filters setup to on your computer no amount of updating MeGUI is going to fix your issue. MKV is just a container and contain a number of different format elementary video streams. You need the correct directshow filter to render whatever type of video is contained in that mkv file.

Here's what you need to do.

First, download MediaInfo. Install it. After its installed, you can right-click the mkv file and choose the new option called MediaInfo. In that window you will be able to see what elementary streams are contained in the mkv file. You will probably see a video stream, and audio stream, and possibly a subtitle stream. What you need to check for is the type of codec your video stream is. Most common case for mkv files lately is h264. Anyways, that's just so you can figure out what codec the video file is.

Honestly though you don't really have to do all that lol...I was just throwing that out partly to educate. Anyways, uninstall any and all codec packs you have installed, like the combined community codec pack, etc. Uninstall divx and xvid if you have it. Download and install the latest version of FDDShow. It will decode almost every codec out there, with a few exceptions. It has a filter/directshow filter for h264 which is probably what you're missing, but you need to uninstall all those other codec packs first so there's no conflicts. You want FDDShow to handle the h264 decoding. Sometimes MKV files with have VC1 video streams as well. If you're on windows, update to windows media player 11 and the directshow filter for VC1 will be installed.

So again, 1) Uninstall any previous codecs/codec packs. 2) Download/Install FDDShow. 3) Download/install windows media player 11.

Reboot your computer. Try running MeGUI's avisynth script creator again and importing the MKV file. Should work now.

Let me know if that helps you.

Yes it could be another problem. Did you install MediaInfo? If not, do so and find out what kind of codec the video stream is using.

With the proper FFDShow codecs, yes. For simplicity, just install the latest K-Lite Codec Pack and you'll be able to watch virtually anything from within Windows Media Player...

hey guys, need some help please.

i have downloaded -Pirates.of.The.Caribbean.The.Curse.of.The.Black.Pearl.2003.720p.nHD.x264.NhaNc3 - however converting it to a playable format for the PS3 using MKV2VOB results in the video resolution (960x544 @ A.R.2.35, Anamorphic(YES) 1280x544) becoming warped, whereby the resolution is squashed up (more narrow across the screen. eg peoples faces are much more narrow if you know what i mean)?

Am i converting this wrongly some how?

Are you resizing to 960x544 from 1280x544? Sounds like you are going from 1280x544 to 960x544, and I'm not sure why you are doing that. You're keeping the vertical resolution the same (544) but "squishing" your horizontal resolution to 960. Don't apply any resizing if it's already at 1280 horizontal resolution. You may need to re-encode the video though to add borders to the video...I'm not sure if the PS3 requires correct 1280x720 resolution. If that's the case, you're going to have to re-encode the video to add borders. 88 pixels top border and 88 on bottom. But again that's only if the PS3 requires exact 1280x720 resolution...I'm not sure about that.

Hey Alcore, thanks for replying mate, ive posted this before, but had no response so i appreciate your help!

To elaborate im not choosing any re-sizing at all. im simplying adding the file in MKV2VOB and letting it do the conversion work for me. there are hardly any settings in this program, its simply add the file and it will format it for you.

The resolutions i quoted in my post are the actual resolutions listed in the text file from the encoder/uploader who created the movie/file.

let me know what you think?

Unfortunately some 1080p encodes that were coded to level 5.1 are not playable even though you change the level to 4.1 using tsMuxeR or h264info. The only way to fix this is to recode the movie yourself using a profile that sets the reference frames low enough that a stand-alone or PS3 understands, which was most likely the inital problem, and sets the level to 4.1 where it should be.

The 5.1 encodes were intended for playback on the PC, not for the PS3.

can u please tell me how i do this?
+1 What is the best method? Seems like you are pretty experienced with this...

Honestly I have no idea I don't use that program. What it seems to me is that the video stream has a Display Aspect Ration flag in it. 1280x544 is the correct display ratio for the movie's 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It could be a couple of things. Your media player of choice could not be respecting/acknowledging the DAR flag and not resizing it on the fly like it should, or MKV2VOB could be not applying a DAR. Maybe MKV2VOB ignores DAR flags in the output because maybe PS3 doesn't support a DAR flag in a vob container? I'm no expert on MKV2VOB but that's my only guess is that MKV2VOB is dumping the DAR flag and leaving the resolution at its SAR (Stored Aspect Ratio.) You may have to re-encode the video. Easiest method would be RipBot264.

I know you're not directing your question to me but I can help with the question "what's the easiest method to do this."

First let's start by saying that PS3 does in fact now support AVC @ level 5.1. They must have added support for 5.1 in a recent firmware. But your video still may or may not play depending on how many reference frames were used.

So assuming you still need to re-encode your video, easiest way to do so is to use RipBot264. Just choose the blu-ray profile and the output file will be playable on a standalone bluray player or ps3. choose the right output format too. Bluray disk is probably the right choice for you.

i just wanted to add that i tried playing the .avi file from and external hd that i connected to the ps3, and it plays fine, so i guess the issue is from streaming the file from my computer to the ps3, i use wmp11 and like i said, it worked perfectly until now. thanks again for the help.

And this holds true for streaming with TVersity, correct? I ran one of my 1080p mkv's through tsmuxer again [and left the profile alone, just converted from .mkv -> m2t] and got the same thing- audio but no video [with 15-20Mb/s up at the top right after hitting the select button].

Honestly, I could care less about compatibility with other BR players, I just want it to stream through TVersity without having to re-encode on the fly, since the computer I'm streaming from isn't the best machine but has alot of HD space.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out and report back.
