the computer should work as it did before it broke, you shouldn't have to reformat, although anything can happen
I think you should make a back up if possible

By computer do you mean the PS3? I guess I thought that maybe after fixing the issue, providing it worked, that it would just go right back about its business. I dunno tho, guess I could understand if it did and if it didn't. But since I can't even turn the system on I can't back it up to an external.

Hi, I'm new and have been very interested by all of this.
I have half fixed the YLOD but have problems: When you turn the PS3 on it powers down after about 10 seconds - not to YLOD just to solid red light. If I hold power and go to the recovery menu it allows me to choose my option. However the HD has now gone to silent and if I chose options 4 or 5 I receive the message either: the hard disc cannot be accessed or the correct hard disc was not found. The power supply and hard disc work and have been tested in my other PS3, also it can?t find the USB update even though the USB light flashes anf the HD powers up on start up.
Any ideas? I'm totally stumped with this.
Thanks in advance.

yes my friend it does help if you read and understand before trying.
for you're info when fixed the ps3 will not ask you to format the hard drive unless it is from another ps3 or it is a unformated drive!
IT SHOULD BOOT UP AS BEFORE WITH ALL YOURE OLD STUFF STILL INTACT!

okay i tried again with some mx-2 paste. Booted up fine all normal and i thought it had worked but then the fan got faster agian and agian so i turned it off again. It had improved though as it was longer inbetween each stage but it should still not do that? I just cannot get this thermal paste right!

hi,
I just fixed my YLOD and playing for about 10 hours without any problem for the moment on my 20Gb from 2006
My other problem is a 40Gb from HK,
NO VIDEO
NO SYNCHRO
ONLY GREEN LIGHT
When i put something(3mm height) between fan/RAD and CELL/RSX, it' work fine but the fan make noise like a vaccum.
How can i manage to keep video and slow the fan?
Thanks,

With my mx-2, on the instructions it says to put a blob in the middle and let the haetsink do the rest. Should i try this or do i HAVE to spread it? Sorry i hate thermal paste and can never get it right :-(

Ok guys... i reflowed with my heat gun at 800F for 1 minute and it worked for 30 min this time, since i think my system got too "overhrated" im going to try for 2 MINUTES i know im gona risk to melt it up but theres nothing else i can do, ples i just bought an external fan , the one that goes to the back of the consolle... and use the ceramic artic 5 thermal paste... so anyway, im going to try tomorrow and then post it the result.... wish me luck :p

Every reflows why not reball and confirm no solder bridge as well it will be 100% after a reball
Reball takes longer but better reults and I keep reading that people are reflowing more than once so one reball should do it

Does anybody know if there are any user videos of this whole process? Someone going through it as necessary. I understand some people are using different heat guns, and hair dyers =p , and different temps but I'm just curious. Tried looking around but didn't find anything. Was just wondering.

I know some point out the major things but anyone else know where the fuses are and what they go to etc.
This is one of my boards btw

In progress next week, but note I am going to try a slightly different approach than the cook-cool-and-flip method.
I would recommend a sacrificial PCB (like an old video card) to practice on to get the approximate time and temperatures.
Remember to do this outside... although it is Lead free it will still have some nasty fire retardants in the board.

Do not put a blob in the center or you may damage the chip.
Try pieces of scotch tape down each edge
Apply thermal grease
Run your scraper edge along the top of the tape
remove tape to leave your stenciled tile
repeat for other surfaces

CTRwannaB,
The fuse is a ceramic type located in the high voltage section of the power supply block.
btw, that is one filthy board -- a vacuum and 99% alcohol wash will do wonders.
Remember, cats like the warmth -- but can't buy you a new ps3 =)

Sorry I was too lazy to clean it lol.
I know about the fuses in the Power Supply Unit.
I'm mainly looking for certain fuses on the mobo, as there seem to be dozens of them :(
Maybe the one that makes the PS3 shut off right when it turns on.
Yes, I already tried a working PSU.
I know theres a blown fuse on the Mobo somewhere, heard it pop :(

Reball (difficult even with tools):
remove the chips from PCB
clean pcb pads and chips (tricky)
prep chips with flux
replace the solder covered balls on the chip
align the chip precisely where it was ($1500 rework station)
heat bond
Reflow (easy and this thread's theme):
heat until the solder melts (and hope it bonds the cracks)
btw, a solder bridge is uncommon if already successfully bonded
Just remember:
It will likely get bricked if you bump of move anything when the bonds are hot!

hello guys, i just got YLOD on my ps3 yersteday ...before 2 months i got my blu ray drive dead (could not play blu ray only ) where i switched it with a use blu ray lens KEM-400aaa and it worked like a charm for arround 2 months until yersteday that got the YLOD....
i am pretty sure it happened from heat because one day before it happened the console closed by its own (was playing all day RE5) but next morning it worked normally till the evening where i opened it for 20 mins and got the YLOD ..
colin i need to know something , do i have to use the heat gun on BOTH CPU GPU and on BOTH sides of the chips in the motherboard? and the temperature must be 350C and 2 inches away from the MOBO ? please man i would like a reply from you asap!
i wanna do this because even if the console works for at least 30 minutes i will rush on take my SAVES backed up cause I CANT AFFORD on loosing them...damn sony!
