As I've said before the reflow didn't work for me but I have a question. I think it might be my psu. Is it normal for it to make a high pitch "whining" kind of noise kind of like steam coming out of a tea pot. Could someone with a working ps3 let me know if theres make that sound. Its not very loud you gotta kind put your ear to it. Also this is with the hdd out.

NO
it shouldn't be making that noise!
sounds like capacitor failure!
the power supply is straining
try re soldering the through hole components!
ive herd of this but have never had a faulty power supply to look at!

Honestly I'm scared to touch anything inside. I made a stun gun with a disposable camera and some paper clips and it was enough to almost drop me scared of what these caps could do. Beside I don't know what through hole is. I think I might try to buy one on ebay although I'm kinda worried I'll receive a brick. Prices from $1-$80... If only it was more like a PC *sigh*

through hole is a term used for components ie capacitors or resistors
that have leads(legs) on them which stick through the pcb board and are then soldered!
SMT means surface mount components ie capacitors and resistors that are small and sit on the pads on the surface of the board!
check for the big electrolytic caps for expansion or even leakage.
do a google search for faulty electrolytic caps for an example!
where do you live?

I live in Jacksonville I'm about to turn it on with the cover off and see if I can pin point the noise. Everything looks ok by my unprofessional standards.

Sound seems to be coming from one of these large capacitors. Being that my ps3 died a few days after I switched it from horizontal to inverted i think somethings loose I'm gonna remove the copper cover later and get a better view. Here is a pic of em. I can't tell if thats some sort of chemical leaking from the cap or just glue. I know when a cap fails it usually bubble and leaks.

hi everyone, i was wanting to say thanks for all the info ive learned from reading this forum, my ps3 is a 60g and over 2 years old and has been taken extremely good care of, anyway the other day i was internet browsing and wham, it went off, itried to power it up and it went yellow light then red flashing and kept it over and over (YLOD). So i didnt have any warranty and i dont want to pay sony any more money right now,i decided to take it apart and try the heat gun trick, it worked and i was shocked... then the fan got louder so i turned it off caus i was afraid of burning it up. went to turn it back on later and YLOD (AGAIN). I applied the heat sink compound which came from radioshack, TOO THICK i believe. I stayed up all night last night and this time i put a thin layer on just the rsx and the cpu. didnt put none on the heat sinks on the fan side. i heated it for about 50 seconds then applied force with a folded up towel before i used the compound. I applied the compound with one finger inside a sandwich bag, one or two little dabs then smear it in circular. Then when i was putting it together i bent the two metal strips that screw over top the rsx and cpu, so it would press against it harder. I got it all back together and it has been running for 10 and ahalf hours non stop. I will post back if it quits, thanks for the help guys i didnt think it would ever work again.

oh i forgot to add sony will fix these systems if the seal is broken, as long as there not damaged or abused. there technician decides whether or not if its been hurt or not by someone trying to fix it. I would buy a 199 xbox before i give them 150$ to fix my 700$ ps3 i bought a couple years ago.

hey earl_1983, my fan keeps doing the same as yours did at first getting really fast and im worried it will ylod again. ive tried putting a really thin layer on but it still does the same. is it worth bending the clips like you did to gain more pressure? and how much did you apply?
Thanks

I'm talking about under and side of it theres nothing on top. Without the flash you can't see much of anything.

i applied two little dabs on each one and rubbed it in with a sandwich bag over my finger. Then i just barely bent the metal strips (barely) just a little. the first attempt to fix is when my fan got really loud and i shut it off and then got the ylod. The second attempt is still yet working great. played it for about three hours today and gonna play tonight to, also i done the new 2.70 update after the fix.

hi guys and thankyou colin for your excellent walkthrough guide on how to fix my ylod! it was about a week ago my stopped working! a couple of days earlie my fan started makin a real loud noise, i new something wasnt right as my computer just shut down! i was playing socom and thought it was the games fault as it has a few problems, so i just swithched it back on and it worked fine again for another day! then the next day it happened again, the fan went really loud and then bam my ps3 shut down, only this time it wouldnt start and i got the green, yellow then red flashing light, it hasnt worked since. so last night i was searching for a cure after i heard it could be the power pack (if thats what it is called) so bought a new one fitted that and still the YLOD! i was gutted! but once i found this thread i thought i had nothing to lose, so today i went out and bought all the equipment needed for your guide and hey presto here i am. im not sure if its gonna work yet as i am typing this while the first reflow process is cooling, i will to the second reflow stage let that cool and then hopefully it will work! i will repost in around 30 minutes and im praying it works because i do not want to pay sony £150! robbing bast**ds!!
thanks

well thank you very much! this topic is now my favourite ever! followed the guide every step and it worked first time! downloaded the firmware update and no shut down, over heating or anything! was running about 30 mins! then when i put it on a little later i was playing socom for 2 hours straight and not a single problem! fingers crossed it stays the same for a good while!
oh and i also bought a fan for extra cooling which should help!
thanks again colin and everyone else for your imput!
