See that's crazy, 2 min at 1kF?
I'm just not sure with all these different results/reports - some working longer than others, some not working, some just returning to the YLOD. All these different times and temps, if you were to push that 1000F any further would you be at a real risk of warping/ruining the MB? That's one thing I'd be worried about, cause, yeah. =/

PerryIta: Do you know if it does this because of heat problems or not? Does the fan speed up quite a lot and is the air really hot coming out of the vents?

Quick update... if i let it cool now it start again.... so i guess with that big reflow i did something good.... but still after a couple of minutes it shut off... so guys i dont know what to do... im scared of try the 2.5 minutes at 1000f and i know that 2.5 minutes at 700f is not gona change a thing... maybe i just should remove the extra fan i bought... or maybe not i dont know what to do... all i know is that im not gona give up... now that i see chenges.... im startinf to believe that it is possible for me to fix it... so if someone has some advise.. pls help me...
btw guys, i never used to write on forums, but now i gotta say that this one is very helpfull, and that there are a lot of people ready to help others.... so guys like colin says.... we have to screw this company SON* that is great of makeing consolle but that just dnt wanna admit that a overheat problem happened 1 month after the 1 year warranty.... should be repaired for free... but i heard somewhere that nobody is perfect... so... keep trying...:d

yes.. with my first tryes the air used to come out really hot and just after 5 min... but the fan didnt speed up... now with like i call(big reflow) it stayed cool for like 15 minutes then warm and then after 1 hour hot..... i have to say that i putted on an extra fan... so i dnt know if the fan is the problem for me.... witch i dnt think so... its defenatly a overheating problem... just trying to figure out how to solve it... we have to work like a team.. so i sugggest if anyone discovers something new with varios tryes... well should let everybody know about it... cmon guys... i fell like im so f******g close...

Well what temp does the solder melt in the PS3?
Because certain solder melt at certain temps.
If your going doing 1k F, man all solder melt at that temp.
Your doing more harm then good I think. Whats the GPU/CPU temp threshold?

Damn, see it is encouraging to know that it at least started working again. Even if it just turns off, its still progress, right?! Why did you replace the fan with your own, or did you somehow rig up an additional fan???

If it is heat it may possibly be the heatsink or compound not mounted corectly and causing it to shutdown immediately. I am still having problems with getting the correct thermal compound amount and its so frustrating and so it gets super hot really quickly so you may want to investigate into that a little bit more. I hope you solve it!

See that's what I was thinking, 1kF is f*cking hot! hah, I mean, I don't want to risk warping of the mb or something by going that hot, obviously he is progressing in temp but hey, if it's lasting longer even at that heat, maybe its nearly there. i dunno tho, that's crazy cause that's pretty warm

537'C (1000'f) is too hot, if held on long enough it will damage parts, and may create toxic fumes.
Generally:
300'C For bonding BGA chips
320'C For rework of already bonded chips (ideal)
Slightly hotter if the solder has oxidized a bit.

Anyone tried using flux before heating?
I know were not using a heating gun or iron but would that help the solder melt faster/ easier?

Okay got a bit better this time after my third time re-applying the thermal paste as the fans didnt get to stage three however after about 15mins of playing an the second stage kicking in the vide oon screen went a bit liney so i decided to turn it off. Does this mean too much paste on GPU?

hello
follow the guide from start to finish!
yes you do need a heat gun or reflow station! heat guns cheaper!
it would be advisable to reflow both bga's just to save you time re stripping down to do the other if doing only 1 didn't work!
you could reflow at a higher temp if you want but be careful not to delaminate the board(separate the muti layers)
good luck!!!!!!
after you've repaired four ps3 ylod's its plain sailing after that lol
the next ps3 i have to repair I'm going to attempt a remove/reball and refit of a bga so stay posted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Paskov i will add a little more thermal paste... i just applied a little bit like half rice grain and spread over the surface... 1 question... should i add it to the old one or remove it and apply the new? cause you know... its like 10 dollar a little bottle.... lol and i already wasted like 3 of them...
so im waiting for an answer to proceed... thx in advance

Yeah like the guide says you always have to remove old paste if applying some new paste

Good luck with the reball -- get some good solder wick and a magnifying glass ;p
http://smt.pennnet.com/Articles/Article_...SION_NUM=3&p=35
It may be possible by hand:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB1InDsWCjQ
Some BGA chips that had the corners pushed down too hard (or crushed by the spring loaded pressure pad) may form bridges if the balls were simply solder alloy bumps (not the jawbreaker kind).
Unfortunately, these kinds of shorts often mean chip death.

Check error code here:
http://www.edepot.com/forums/viewtopic.p...&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
The issue may be related to a bad drive or PCB damage. Try to reformat the drive and see if it is OK to boot up, if this can't be done you are SOL Sony style.
If everything works and it still cuts out it could be your drive is being cooked by the heat -- New drive and better fans may help...
If it is a random cut out than hook it to a UPS to test if it is house power brownouts.

Thanks for that Suck_BGAs
Just formatted it to NTSF instead of FAT32 and . . . . . it worked, it was real slow initially but it?s working. Originally the PS3 yellow lighted during an update, I have now updated the firmware and it?s working normally, Blurays play with no problems as do PS2 games.
Will keep you posted.

ok i just spoke with one friend of mine that is a "computer tech"... he took a look at gpu ad cell and told me that i should apply a very little quantity of thermal paste in the center of the cell/gpu and then spread it making it thinner then a Leaf....
http://www.filefactory.com/file/af64070/...d_dual_wcap_pdf
yesterday i putted almost half bottle on each..... guess thats the reason why it overheated after 1 hour.....
im gona try today again with the reflow ( 1000 F for 120 seconds) and putting that little quantity of thermal paste (the ceramic one in my case)
i will let you guuys know....

Yes u do. I have not been abl to get it to work and I set at 1000F and bubbled a chip. It is destroyed now. So 1000F is very risky. Is 350C dangerous too or is the threshold of the chips above that?
Thanks,
Ced

Yea I want to know the threshold of the CPU/GPU also
Does anyone know the following information.
Ball Dia.
Acceptable Pitch
Min.Offset
Solder Alloy
Body Size (Range)
Thanks

I've been following this forum for a couple days since I got the YLOD. I think its funny that its essentially then same issue as rrod except I guess ps3 are often failing later after there warranty(wonder why). Since the ps3 wont even turn on you can't do the same trick as the 360. Thanks colinjest for the guide I plan on attempting the fix myself I've already got it stripped and cleaned just waiting for the heat gun.
@CTRwannaB: That info wont be easy to find but I'm pretty sure the alloy is tin. Past systems used lead but the stopped to make it more green but it also caused these hardware failures. Tin isn't very flexible.
