Geez, I need to get a "real" life if I have cycles to ponder why some players are more compliant than others. ;-) Here is a hypothesis. Maybe the STB makers are obligated to pay license/royalty fees to use DVD-R, DVD+R, etc. to groups like Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA) or to IP (Intellectual Proptery) holders of the player's software routines and maybe the cheapies are cheap since they don't pay these fees. Maybe the cheapies from countries (like from that big place in Asia), known for not adhering to such laws, forage around for all the hardware/firmware IP that makes them pervasively compatible.

Another thought - maybe the firmware updates dont'a always follow a step-by-step progression and this may account for some of the issues. For example, if the firmware is current with standards at a given point in time, let's say DVD-R, then the DVD+R standard comes out, but the firmware remains untouched. Then when the DL DVD+R comes out, the mfg. decides to update that version of the firmware to support DL DVD+R, but the software staff either forget to bring in the intermediate standards or maybe for economic or schedule factors take the decision to not include the updates. Who really knows - who even cares? :-0

My theory has to do with variations between all lasers-doing the burning and playing.Some are stronger,some weaker. They're all different. I've encountered players that specs listed they wouldn't play dash or plus,but could.Also the other way around-a player's specs call for dash format,but won't recognize it off of certain burners.

Example: My magnavox will play the plus format off my benqs and khypermedia drives-non booktyped,but won't even recognize the plus format from my HP 640c.Different burner=Different laser.

Stand alone compatability and the Quality of a burner go hand in hand.I've got some pretty crappy burners. All my burners will play their own backups perfect.Not so fortunant when those backups hit the stand alone players. That's why I booktype!

You hit the nail on the head there lol. Nah I'm razzing you, it's cool you've given this some thought. I think it's just one of the mysteries of the universe better left unsolved. If you want to ponder why I'm still single...

'cuz women's buttons aren't clearly labelled like those of a PS2 controller. Heck, what I wouldn't give to find a woman with a reset/start over button. Hit the button and take back something stupid I said or did. Flowers only go so far.

i feel we have a VERY similar model Toshiba player, might be the same one actually :) it's very weird why OUR particular Toshibas' really like the DVD-R format, but as mentioned earlier by the others...it's a mystery perhaps better left alone...

@windtrade

we all have certain topics which boggle the mind, i find myself researching high and low sometimes to try to obtain an answer to a "electronic/technical" question i have and all the pervasive answers are nowhere to be found...just one of those things that makes ya say, "hmmmmmmmm...." :)

Trust me, you don't want to pick up women at bars on Saturday night, Sat Night leads to 2AM Sunday morning, which leads to all sensible brain cells sound asleep or passed out on the bottom of your skull and anything with cleavage looks good, Don't believe me, look no further than Bill and Hillary Clinton, throw in Monica for good measure and that will prove drinking and dating don't mix.

I've never been one to pick up women at bars. I'm not looking for a one night stand, and the type of woman I want to be with isn't going to be found at bar. She'll be at a strip club. That last part was a joke lol. I don't drink, so no sense in going to bars. Ever been to a bar sober? Yikes. Anyway this thread has gotten way off topic. Doc says the Yuden000T03's are still way overpriced, anybody find any good deals anywhere?

I've found the Yuden T03's masquerading as Sony 16X, octagonal spacers, MIJ, etc. at Best Buy for $14.99 from time to time, so keep your eyes open for this critter.

I have a toshiba standalone combo VHS/DVD player that doesnt recognize DVD-ROM booktyped +Rs. It also has problems with -Rs. All my other standalones and computers play the same discs fine. Even that damn Panasonic DMR-E85H i have reads it, and that thing wont even record to a -R, any -R anymore, so my disc burn part of that thing is useless now. Yet it reads these discs the toshiba cant. Go figure.
DVD-ROM booktyped media should always fool the player into thinking there is a pressed DVD in there. It doesnt always work. Why it doesnt always work, i dont know. It should be best reads/compatibility of media types are in this order: Pressed disc DVD-ROM, DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM, -R/+R fight for last place. Why the sequence goes out of order is beyond me.

Don't know if there is a fw update for your model Panasonic recorder, but I updated the fw on my model and it is now more accepting of newer media.

Cincyrob, What percentage was the compression at for these movies? Usually if it falls below 75% after removing all unnecessary languages, subtitles etc, I'll burn to a DL Verb. Even on a 51" tv 70-75% compression looks good, but maybe the upconverting dvd player has something to do with it. You could also split the movie onto two discs but for me, I hate to get up and change them halfway through! Also check to be sure that your firmware is up-to-date.

Have you tried any other speed media? So far I have not been ompressed with the 16X stuff. So far, for me, no matter what the burner, firmware, etc I still get awesome results burning TY or Verb 8X at 4X with +R booktyped to dvd-rom. I know every setup is different but for me old-school still works!

Possibly your player is not as compatible with the faster speed discs. Also be sure to defragment your HD often, and not multi-task while encoding burning. Hit alt-ctr-del and check the performance tab to see what kind of resources your system has free before burning. Could be a mal-ware/spyware problem hogging system.

will read up on thoughts re TYG03 when i get chance but for now i can't remember what you ppl's thoughts were on TYG03
in MY opinion, the TYG02s were/are better than the TYG03s (i'm biased as i had to work with the earliest batches of TYG03 when they were first released in the U.S.) :)

they have improved upon the 16x DVD-R since, but as you can see from my sig, it's not one that i DO recommend to people when you talk about Taiyo Yudens :) i feel the 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s (that you obviously have quite a few pieces of) are BETTER than their DVD-R format counterparts...

in MY opinion, the 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s are THE BEST 16x rated media at this point in time, while i personally feel the Verbatim MCC004 16x DVD+R are just a "hair behind," a couple points in nero's quality scan is enough to convince ME that if i had a choice between the YUDEN000T03s and the MCC004s, i would not even hesitate to pick up the TYs ANYDAY over the Verbs :)

don't get me wrong, the Verbatim 16x DVD+R MCC004s are top notch media, but FOR ME, there is a new "king" of the hill in regards to 16x rated media in the DVD+R format~ :)

@cincyrob

since i am not familiar with your particular model HP burner, i don't know the firmware/write strategy table associated with it, have you tried burning your discs @4x? does it make a difference or are the results identical?

you should know by now i am the LAST person on this forum to recommend burning @4x especially on 16x rated QUALITY media (nothing wrong w/ burning @4x, just personally feel it's not necessary on 16x rated media), but it wouldn't hurt to try it out to see if your backups improve any...considering you are using AnyDVD and there is very little to no compression used for those particular movies on clonedvd2, my guess would be there might be a very slight firmware issue (if the most current firmware is over let's say 6 months old), either that or there is a "hiccup" DURING your burning stage (ie. due to multi-tasking, drive buffer, etc.) :)

give it a go if you don't mind "trying" 1 disc @4x, if things DO IMPROVE, it is possible that your drive's OPTIMUM burning speed might be a little lower than the specs' suggest, and you will have found your drive's "sweet spot" for burning in the process.

Now you are going to make put another order into supermedia, so I can stockup for a rainy day, lol. Thanks, doc for your critique. I have not gotten any of the 03's yet so do not know how they will do, but I trust your judgment and will order some more 02's.

@arniebear

hehe, i'm a little biased in my recommendation as i've used less than 500 TYG03s, but over a thousand TYG02s; but that's why i PERSONALLY suggest one over the other, from MY OWN experiences :)

you know i'm not a DVD-R guy myself, but the ones i do/have used are the Taiyo Yuden TYG01/TYG02/TYG03 all with VERY HIGH compatibility in my burners and HIGH success rate~ :)

there are FEW other brands of media i would even personally recommend in the DVD-R format, other than TYs, just MY OPINION once again...

And your opinion is greatfully accepted, since I am loathe to give up my old NEC1300a, it is such a trouper, I have to use -R media. TY has always worked the best the NEC will give 101% using it so I will order another shedload until the burner dies which I hope is not too soon, lol.
