I am not a Nero guru, BUT I CAN tell you that your problem is RAM. You need to ultimately upgrade, but, in the meantime, close down as many applications as possible before burning!

Among other things as well. You definitely influenced my decisions to buy my Pioneer 109 (first burner) and my LiteOn 1693S (second burner). Credit goes to Creaky on my decision to buy my LG 5163D (external version of 4163). All three are excellent burners!!! The Litey handles all my ripping and scanning...

You may want to try cleaning out your registry. I had similar problems with Nero a couple months ago, kept getting write failures, I cleaned out my registry and it worked fine afterwards. You can use apps like RegDoctor, Registry Mechanic, CC Cleaner, etc. CC Cleaner is free, the other ones are pay apps, so be creative.

hehe, we are back on topic~ :)
@teflonmyk
glad i have influenced more than few people with dvd burner recommendations and naturally, TYs :) i'm loving my pioneer dvr-109, buffalo 8.58 firmware cross-flashed, my FASTEST drive to date! :) this bad boi keeps burning and burning and burning, also removed the rip-lock a long time ago...simply great burner (IN MY OPINION) :)
and also the Liteon SOHW-1693S, not too many complaints from me, well built and going strong...which leads me to our current issue...
@VirgUSA
as teflonmyk mentioned earlier, what really stands out about your setup on that particular drive that both of us own and use, is your memory
Quote: Physical memory : 255MB (261668kB)
Free physical memory: 57MB (58544kB)
this is FAR too limited for physical memory, when you can afford it, it would be wise to pick up AT THE MINIMUM another 256mb stick, more would be better~ :)
2ndly, you DO have the most up-2-date firmware for that drive, KSOB, same one i use, HOWEVER, i have found in the past that despite this being the most current firmware, for it to recognize the 16x dvd-r TYG03s you are currently using, it's somewhat "hit-or-miss" :) this firmware was SUPPOSED to add/improve upon "more media" to it's writing strategies/tables, but i PERSONALLY feel it came up a bit short in regards to Taiyo Yudens :) quick note: Liteon drives USUALLY tend to not have issues recognizing the newer media FROM TAIWAN, the japanese made media is less consistant...compound this with the fact that here, you are burning at MAXIMUM speed, is a recipe for disaster~ :)
Quote: 12:27:41 PM #24 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832
Burn process failed at 16x (22,160 KB/s)
so, i also notice that you are only 1 version behind in nero 6 series for burns, 6.6.0.18 is the last STABLE version that most people have success with, 6.6.1.4 works fine FOR ME, but a lot of people have reported memory issues with it, considering you don't have enough memory at this point, i would suggest you NOT use version 6.6.1.4~ :)
here is a dl location for 6.6.0.18 :
ftp://ftp1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
and another in case nero's servers are busy :
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_burning_rom/tech/?539
hmm...what else?
well, that's pretty much all i see at this point in time, namely the firmware is "not good enough" for the 16x rated dvd-r TYG03s (while shop4tech might have told you that there is nothing wrong with the discs, this goes back to why i RECOMMEND people to use the 8x dvd-r TYG02s over that of the 16x rated dvd-r TYG03s, it's right on par with some of the "issues" that i personally have encountered with the TYG03s :) )
due to firmware lacking a bit for your Liteon 1693S and you needing a bit more memory, compounded with TYG03 not being fully supported, the resolution to your problems would be as follows :
1. add more memory (this will prove beneficial to you in the long run for future burns on ANY media of your choice)
2. not much you can do about the firwmare as the one you using is THE MOST current for that drive, gotta take the good with the bad :)
3. if possible, contact shop4tech and request an RMA for the TYG03s and SPECIFICALLY REQUEST the 8x rated dvd-r TYG02s as replacement, or get a refund entirely if you feel the need to do so. i can ALMOST guarantee you that the 8x dvd-r Taiyo Yuden (TYG02) will work with your drive, as i mentioned earlier, i too had a few problems initially with the TYG03s (16x dvd-r), the discs themselves are probably FINE, it's just an incompatibility issue with your particular drive and it's current firmware, the possibility of you having a "bad batch" of TYG03s is there, but highly unlikely~ :)
4. stick with "made in taiwan" media OR slower rated media (4x, 8x rated) if you do not want the trouble/incompatibility issues in the future in regards to MEDIA CHOICE...(ie. continue to use the Verbatim MIT discs 16x dvd-r Disc ID: MCC 03RG20 that HAVE worked for you if you insist on using 16x rated media, OR, use the slower rated MIJ "made in japan" media by Taiyo Yuden -ie. 4x TYG01, 8x TYG02 if you must) :)
that's about it...just out of curiousity, is there a reason WHY you use dvd-r format over that of dvd+R ? is it because of the price (online retailers the dvd-r format is MUCH cheaper than the dvd+R), or you have just used dvd-r format in the past and stick with it? just curious that's all, because your drive is VERY much capable of bitsetting (booktyping dvd+r to dvd-rom) using Liteon's own utility~ :) found here:
http://www.liteonit.com/DOWNLOADS/utilities/BookType135.zip
anyways, just leaving you an option for future burns, i'm a dvd+r booktyped to dvd-rom guy myself (for the HIGHEST compatibility with standalone players) :)
hope that is helpful...u've def. come to the right thread

kivory666,
Thanks so much for the informative reply. I will request a return and specify the media you suggested and get more memory.
I have tried to use Sony's DVD+ and they do not burn well for me. It was suggested to me that the + Media was not a good choice for my LiteOn Burner even though my burner is suppose to burn the plus media. All movies played with freezes no matter at what speed they were burned.
I don't usually burn with Nero. Just did try Nero to get the burn log to show. I usually burn with ImgBurn at at half the rated speed of the media I am using. I did try different speeds with these blanks, 4x, 8x and 16x.
Many thanks to you all.

glad i could be of SOME help to you, please come back (whether the results are good or bad) once you get the new discs, memory and whatever else...hehe, MY OWN Liteon's "prefer" DVD-R format (well, at least in MY experience, they are good DVD+R burners too, but i personally feel Benq's have them beat in the DVD+R format) :)
anyways, good luck, if u are using imgburn to actually BURN your discs, then that does not require nero's burning engine at all, as the general rule of thumb goes...try burning 1/2 rated speed of media 1st...if successful, then up ur burning speed from there...i happen to burn ALL my discs @8x, don't matter what rated speed they are...and recently, been going even higher on my Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03 (@12x and @16x) with VERY impressive results :)
but, let's take this one step at a time...once you get the TYG02s (8x DVD-R Taiyo Yudens), we'll go from there.

I agree on the BenQ's and the +R media, Plextor's are also better +R burners than -R. My old NEC is a great -R burner also my Lite-on 1633S. So I split the load between them and have an equal stash of media.

Down he'ya in the hollahs we have a store called "Big Lots" Sometimes they have in stock Sony 8X MIJ in 50 and 25 packs in stock. The local "Hillbillys" have cleaned out Office Depot and Best Buy and B.J.'s wholesale club of the 8X MIJ fuji and Sony Disks.
If in Charlotte, you may want to visit 1200 East W.T. Harris Blvd, Verbatim headquarters here in Charlotte, right across the street from Bank of America and Wachovia headquarters.

VirgUSA:
Quote: All movies played with freezes no matter at what speed they were burned.
Format shouldn't affect the playback issues. Those sound more like your stand alone player may be at fault.
View them on your pc,using the litey drive to do the playing. It should look perfect. If so,then it's a stand alone player issue. Sometimes a player may need a lens cleaning disc run through. It's a last resort,in my book.
cincyrob: I got some relatives down toward Elkton kentucky. That's where my mom's from.Way over on the western side. Excellent fishing down there.
blivetNC: I got an Oddlots about 2 mins away. I go in there about once a week.No luck on sony tys. They only have JVC-Malaysia/China, Memorex, and RCA. Also higher price than the good stuff that I pick up locally. I'll still keep an eye out for them sony yudens. I bought every spindle in my town and keeping them saved for a special occasion.

I may have missed it if you mentioned whether or not your burner is internal or if you (like me) use an external enclosure. I used to get "power calibration" errors because of an old USB v2.0 (only) external enclosure which I have not had since I changed enclosures (and media). Don't tell anyone but I started out using Prodisc!
I have no problems with my NEC 2510A burner in an external Firewire/USBv2.0 enclosure (using firewire) with my IBM T42 laptop. I usually only burn 8x media (never purchased 16x) and my source ISO is on an external IDE hard drive in a similar (though 3.5" instead of 5.25") enclosure. I burn at 4x or rarely 6x and leave my machine alone while I'm burning. I have 1GB of RAM and a 1.6Ghz processor.
For inkjet printable media I've been with Verbatim for a while (both -/+) and usually pick up the occasional Sony/Ty +R 50 pk on sale at Staples for my Panasonic DMR-ES20S. The DMR-ES20S stopped finalizing Ritek G05's after a while and that is frustrating.
free software works!

Haven't been in Biglots/Oddlots for a while, so they may be out, but, at $15.99 for 50 it's worth a trip for the Ty Addicts out there.

@Doc, My Sony DRU-800A is a rebadged Lite-on 1693S and will burn the TYG-03 flawlessly, the latest firmware is KY-06 and will burn those bad boys at 16X without problems, (still burn at 12X for comfort though)

well, looks like the firmware from Sony is better equipped than the Liteon counterpart, might be an option for VirgUSA to look into a cross-flash based on YOUR past experiences~ :)
i have never flashed a Liteon to a Sony, but i'm pretty sure it can be done...good observation, hope VirgUSA reads your comment.

WOW is this a large thread, but it is about a GREAT TOPIC.
I would first like to ask the following:
For CD-Rs and DVD+Rs, I want to use INK JET writible media
Can I get directed to vendors that are reliable, where I can get REAL TY media that are INK JET writables ? I like the +R format, only because tjhe play more reliably on my stand alone DVD player.
Just as a FYI, I have a liteon 1693S. I find it very reliable and have burnt DVD+R DL reliably as well.
For those who have passionate arguments about which burner is better, Lite-on, Sony, Benq and NEC, it should be know that all of them are made by Liteon Liteon taking over all of Benq burner business is fairly recent.
Here is a bad joke. What is the different between a Sony Burner and a Liteon Burner.
Answer: About $50.

As soon as I read up on how to do it and get the courage, I may try to cross flash my LiteOn 1693S to Sony DRU-800A, firmware KY-06. This in an internal drive. I have added additional memory, from 256 to 512.
Thanks for the suggestion. I would love to be able to burn those TGY-03. Maybe it would also help with burning DVD+R media?

I am gonna check out Twin Peaks over on Tryon Road myself!!! I gotta get out of dodge Sunday evening before the race traffic heads out, though! It'll take me forever to get back to Raleigh if I get caught up in that! Better yet, I may just stay put until Monday. There's always good scenery from the hotels around Harris Blvd and the University...

The best scenery around here is getting stuck on I-77N just past exit 28 when the boaters are out, like "Girls Gone Wild" on the lake.
Yeah, we're getting out of here to avoid the race lunacy.
Never been to Twin Peaks myself but my employees love it. The race won't let out until near midnight. The last of 'em will be getting out around 3 or 4 in the morning, Heck the world premiere of "Cars" didn't get out until midnight itself.
@Doc and Virg, I have never cross-flashed a drive before, too chicken to do it myself, I'm sure if you do a search someone will have posted a cross-flash guide and left good instructions and warnings what not to do. Good luck with it and let me know what comes of it.
