The Maxell CD-R's I bought code out as TY, the best in my estimation. Got them from Sams Club, a little pricier than I normally buy but they are really great.

I would say Ritek was good, better than CMC Mag anyday. Here is an article on TY CD media.

Yes it does make a difference in cd media also.

If they're newer burners you can probably hold off. I used it on mine after I had done quite a bit of a ripping & burning w/ them.
A friend of mine was getting alot of crc errors ripping on one of his older drives. Ran the lens cleaner and that did the trick for him.
I think the cleaner is good for at least 5 uses.

What brand/model of lens cleaner is recommended? I've never cleaned the drives for a few years. Things seem just fine, no skips/errors/etc. Maybe I should follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra and leave things be.

The one I use is Maxell (only one Best Buy had) - it's just a disc with a small brush on it to clean the lens. Not for laptop drives though. Some use rubbing alcohol and a QTip.
Since I use my drives a lot I figured better to stop a problem before it may start :) Preventive maintenance maybe.

@cincyrob

hehe, glad you are loving your new TYs~ :) guess i brought a new member over to the TY-side of things :P Verbatims are good media, no doubt about that, but much like you have seen from your OWN experience now, you can see why my PREFERENCE for media remains in the Taiyo Yuden camp~ happy burning...

as to the CD-Rs, yes, Taiyo Yuden manufacture the Maxell MIJ ones, and much like arniebear, i bought the 100 pack count also, but at Staples when they had them on sale LONG ago along with the Fuji 30-pack colored MIJ TY manufactured dvd-r/dvd+r way back when~ :) i haven't used many cd media in the past, but look how good the quality of TY media is for dvd, since they made cd-r FIRST, i'm pretty sure that they are very high quality cds too~ :)

i figure the Ritek coded cds are pretty good too, but i have maybe a dozen or so cd-r burns, so i don't have enough experience to tell you accurately~ :) hehe, im sure some members here have as many cd burns as i do dvd burns...

have a good one all, nice tip about the Maxell lens cleaner binkie, next time i go to bestbuy, i'm gonna go pick one up myself -might do me some good as i rip/burn quite a bit on my drives too and have never used a lens cleaner yet, if my drive heads south, i usually just replace it with a new one LOL...not the most economical solution, but i swap drives in and out of my computers like people swap USB thumb-drives for data "on the go" :)

well, you got 1st dibs on them, next time one heads south, i'll send em' to you~ :) perhaps you can work your lens cleaning magic on them and they will be fully restored~ and you get a drive for free, which only sweetens the deal~ LOL

@docTY.
yea ya got me on your side now buddy. nothing but TY's for me after all my verbs are gone. it is a noticable change l;ike i said but then again i did use that MAXELL lens cleaner on my players so thatmight be part of it also.....but i am extra happy with those sonymijs(ty002).

@binkie....
my burner isnt but 3months old and only has about 150 burns on it not counting cd-r burns....so i think i might wait on juseing it on my drive.....

hey theres another questionwhile im on the topic is it good to burn both dvd and cd on the same burner? i have 2 drive 1just does cd's and my newest drive does it all dvd cd lightscribe etc.... but i have burned music on my newest drive along with dvd's should i stop and just use the cd write for that?

LOL

most my burners are pretty good, i have a variety of Pioneers, Benqs, Liteons, Necs, etc...i don't have a Plextor drive yet, but perhaps in the future i'll consider dropping the big bucks for one... :)

when i buy drives, i usually get more than one at the same time (to save on shipping) LOL, but 90% of mine are OEM, i only have a few Sony dru-710a that was actually RETAIL kit~ :) everything else came in bubblewrap/white box bare drive only

i've put most of my drives through hell and back, whether it be ripping, burning, or both...guess i got lucky that they all still going strong (*knock on wood*), but when they do decide to work less than optimally, you can expect one arriving to your doorstep via USPS Priority Mail (i send everything Priority Mail LOL) :) 2-3 day service is fast for the price you pay for shipping...i am guessing you can't wait till a drive dies on me huh? j/k~

docTY~

edit: @cincyrob

it should be just fine to burn both cds and dvds on your new drive, BUT, if you are extra cautious about the "wear and tear" on your newer drive, i would allocate your cd burning onto your dedicated cd-burner, that's just ME, but either way, it depends how concerned you might be at using a particular drive to perform a particular task~ :)

Well docTY I got my TY's Today and burned one DVD for a testdrive. I can't say I have noticed any difference's considering I have been using Verb's Data Life Plus and having no problem's with them. But I liked the deal that Supermediastore had on them plus all
the "follower's" from this thread and this website. I'm sure they are excellent media, I believe what I hear from these addicts and of course yourself, they have never steered me wrong.

I won't be doing much burning the next few days since I am going on vacation. Hooray!!
I'm taking the family down south to Branson, Missouri. One of our favorite spots.

Till then TY'dian's,

Strat

remember guys another way to clean your drives is with a shot of CANNED AIR !!! works great, and take the side off your PC case at least 3 times a year and clean it out with canned air ,my Antec case has a filter in the front so i can pull it out and clean it,keeps everything running cooler also being the dust is really hard on the fan bearings !!!!!

Me too! For a long time I was concerned that my Pioneer DVR-105 was going to wear out but it is amazing that it still does duty like day one. I've put at least 2500 discs into that thing and like you "knock on wood" it is still going strong.

Gave them a shot each for good luck. Didn't see any visible dust flying out so they seem OK. thx for the cheap idea

Canned air is my computers best friend, had to use it a lot to keep one of my fans going before a replacement arrived.

always important to check airflow in a case, surprising how important it is. i got some Enterprise-class servers at work that stay pretty damn clean inside (even after like 3years) as they were properly designed. But either way it's always worth seeing if improvements can be made

I bought from Shop4Tech, DVD-R Silver Lacquer (Valueline) by Taiyo Yuden. I have tried to burn 10 of these and all but 2 will not burn. They just will not start a burn. I have other brand disk and they burn okay. I called Shop4Tech support and the rep. told me it cannot be a problem with the disk. They have never had a complaint with Taiyo Yuden media.

I just tried a Benchmark Test with Nero and get a Write Error, (030C00). Part of a Nero Burn Log;

12:32:59 PM #20 CDR -1106 File Writer.cpp, Line 311
Power calibration error

12:33:00 PM #21 Text 0 File ThreadedTransfer.cpp, Line 228
all writers idle, stopping conversion

12:33:00 PM #22 Text 0 File ThreadedTransfer.cpp, Line 222
conversion idle, stopping reader

12:33:00 PM #23 Text 0 File DVDR.cpp, Line 2903
EndDAO: Last written address was -1

12:33:00 PM #24 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832
Burn process failed at 16x (22,160 KB/s)

Any help would be appreciated.
