Looks as if Hitachi-LG or LiteOn are the actual manufacturers of that HP drive. (Can anyone confirm???) You may have a rebadged LG. The LGs don't support the scans... The LiteOns do. Sorry...

EDIT: You can try DVDInfoPro, but your results won't be very reliable...

Can't confirm about rebadged LG-HP connection, but The LGs are NOT supported in Nero's Quality Scan. The burners are excellent hardware just not supported. It led to my new benQ 1650 acquisition.

i currently burn them at 8x speedare these good enouhg media to burn at 12x? as you can do with clonedvd2? second i also have gotten those mij maxell 8xDVD+R's which code out at maxell 002. are these good enough to try at 8x?
while i too am unfamiliar with your HP burner, teflonmyk and garmoon have made some very good suggestions~ :) i don't own an LG drive at the moment, but i would follow teflonmyk's advice IF your HP is in fact a rebadged LG...IF your HP is a rebadged Liteon, i can tell you right now that on my 3 liteon drives that i currently own and use, 1633S, 1693S, and my Sony dru-710a which is a rebadged 1633S, ALL burn the Maxell002 just fine @8x~ :) teflonmyk has some excellent scans with Maxells, mine are on par with his; i'm sure the others could offer you more experience/advice in regards to LG drives and how they perform, i believe creaky has a few of them too (but has since come aboard the Benq 1650 bandwagon that i among others promote) :)

as to your MCC004 16x Verbs DVD+R, on my Benq 1640/1650, i get very good scans when burned @12x, but since i am stuck on my "old dog ways", i still burn @8x on even my 16x rated media (TYG03/YUDEN000T03/MCC004/MXLRG04) :) i don't know if Maxell (MIJ Hitachi) have a new one they manufacturer for the 16x DVD+R format (it WOULD be MAXELL003, but i have yet to see any nor have i tried any yet) i would be very interested if someone DID get a 16x Maxell MIJ with a MAXELL003 coding, so far at least here in the U.S., i have NOT seen any reports of them, but rather, i have seen some PHILIPSC16 and CMCMAGM01 so far, neither of which i would PERSONALLY use or have any confidence in... :)

anyways, for your 8x DVD+R Maxells, i would PERSONALLY burn them @8x, for your 16x DVD+R Verbatims, i would burn them at either 8x or 12x, heck, even @16x if your heart desires...i can tell you from FIRST HAND experience though, if you are using a Benq drive, burning those MCC004s any SLOWER THAN 8x will give you crappier results, my 4x burns are pitiful compared to that of my 8x or 12x burns~ :) i didn't even bother wasting a good disc to try @2.4x burn, that is just stupid and ANYONE with ANY INTELLECTUAL CAPACITY will tell you that to burn a MCC004 @2.4x "cuz it gives u better results" is FULL OF $hit~ :) pardon the french~

@docTY

thanks again. i think i will try those verbs at 12x. not gonna try 16x.which at 8x is fast enought for me. i am very happpy with the 20-25 mins im burning in now so no need to push it, am just curious thats all. i think im gonna have to crack open my box and actually see what type i have, but from what everyone is saying its a LG. guess im gonna have to get me one of the liteon or benq burners.

@teflonmyk

2. Verbatim- Made in Taiwan (and other places)
3. Maxell High Grade- Made in Japan.

There's no reason to use any media aside from these.

hi, unfortunately, tigerdirect, along with MOST of the reputable online stores people mention to buy Taiyo Yuden media are located here in the United States~ :)

as far as i know, these stores (located here in southern California) do NOT have international shipping available...

i wish i could tell you where to get Taiyo Yuden media, but since most of the contributors here are either here in the U.S., Canada, Australia, or the UK and other parts of Europe; i don't know anyone personally that resides in either Malaysia or Singapore...sorry~

i ran a basic google search to try to locate a seller in your part of the world, but i couldn't find anything concrete (most of the pages were in a different language that i could not decipher and google wouldn't properly translate the page either) :)

if anyone is in cynn's neck of the woods and are reading this, please let him/her know~

it's a shame you can't get TYs over there in your country, they are very fine media indeed~

docTY~

Can you get Sony discs in malaysia? The Sony 8XDVD+R MIJ are Taiyo Yuden 000-T02s. The plastic circle retainer that holds the disc on the spindle is octagon in shape.

Great thread - I'll admit that I did not read all 59 pages but did read the first and last 20. Hope that qualifies me to post. :-)

Two things: 1) I'm reporting a TY media problem; 2) asking for options for new "value/quality" DVD writer.

1) TY media problem
My past several hundred dvd burns have used TYG02, burned on a Pioneer DVR-105 at 4x (max for drive) using Nero 6.6.0.14. I never had a problem until this past week when I discovered three bad discs. It is media related as I can visually see a slightly darker, hazy ring about 3mm wide in the middle of the discs (same location) and a slight splatter spray discoloration on the other. Two are readable from the same drive, the other got about 30% then encountered fatal read errors.

These are coded GG000077 and were from a batch purchased about 6 weeks ago from Supermediastore (Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-R DVD01X0238-100 $23.99, Media Silver Shiny in Tape Wrap 100 Pack). The remaining unburned discs are fine and only one of the burned discs had a couple very small darkish dots/spots.

Until this incident, I can say I've never had any problem with TY from Supermediastore. Based on the experiences reported here about TY media and SMS as a dealer, I'm going to write it off as a rare defect in QC. At the same time, I am posting this to solicit any others who may encounter similar problems. I did see a post where the same batch was mentioned and this might help others double-check their own inventory.

2) Options for new drive
I would like to add a new DVD burner and am looking for suggestions. Based on what I read here I am targeting a Lite-On or Benq. My requirements are simple: single layer plus/dash, scan utility (nero DVD speed, QSuite, etc.) to accurately measure burned disc quality PI/PIF/quality ratio, etc. I don't even think I need one that has features like Book Type management. Ijust want the lowest cost yet decent quality and durability. The DVR-105 has been in service for several years and still going great. It writes at 4x, fine with me, but has no utilities for reporting burned disc quality like for Lite-On drives.

The Lite-On 16xxs series and certain Benq models seem like good choices, just need a little help with specific model/features/cost.

Thanks

Just got a 16X DL BenQ 1650 OEM uptodate firmware shipped $40 from newegg.com. AND you really do need to book type those +R discs. It uses Qsuite and will book type. And it's a great burner for peanuts.

More cheers for BenQ. The only time I had a problem with my 1640 is when I experimented with Verbatim DVD+R DL at Max speed. I could still watch it on my pc but set-top DVD units didnt like it, even with booktyping to ROM. So, I dont burn at max speed, one step below it and things are great.

Is it that you want to Book Type the burned DVD+ disc as DVD-ROM so it will be most compatible (troublefree) with a STB? I guess with DVD-R it's not an issue since that standard does not support the feature and the STB players are programmed to not bother.

I found this dedicated thread on Benq drives. Full of hardcores burner phreaks and posted scan test results. The dw1650/1655 seem to be excellent units and burn TYG02 at 8x with outstanding quality. I never understood the degree of quality of TY media until I looked at many of the posted scans of different media and they consistently show TY media is very high quality, maybe even the best when used with a Benq burner.

Yeah I have a Sony DRU-810A which is an OEM BenQ 1640. I crossflashed it, and it works great. I've never had any issues with it, love the BenQ drives.

Ok, a bit of an update. Only seems to be certain movies that won't play. This may be less a disc problem and more a player or burning problem.
