@windtrade

welcome aboard to my thread, lot of great info here and many very knowledgeable contributors~ :)

as to your few "defective" discs, it happens to even the most pronounced Taiyo Yuden users (namely myself) LOL i've used thousands of TYs in both the dvd-r and dvd+r format over the years and my "defective" discs count is probably higher than MOST PEOPLE's "coaster" count~ :) but, nevertheless, when you look at the "bigger picture", approx 100 "physically defective" discs out of 10,000 plus is STILL less than 1% :P
i would personally just "chalk it up" as an inevitable "hiccup" that ALL manufacturers have now and again, but that should not make you worry as to the quality control standards that Taiyo Yuden adhere by.

as to a good value/quality burner, i will have to echo the others in recommending the Benq 1650, my sentiments regarding this inexpensive, yet VERY HIGH QUALITY drive, are 2nd to none...i PERSONALLY feel the benq 1650 is "the best bang for the buck" drive currently available on the market, yes, i feel it's THAT GOOD~ :)
while it does FAVOR the dvd+r format, booktyped to dvd-rom using QSuite utility, it DOES burn dvd-r format very well too. if you are going to continue to use Taiyo Yuden media, then you will not go far wrong in EITHER format (dvd-r or dvd+r) with the benq drive.

purchasing online you can naturally see that the dvd+r format offerings are more expensive than their counterpart dvd-r format, so, if you insist on TYs' dvd-r, you will be just fine with the quality output on a benq. from personal experience, i use my Pioneer dvr-109, crossflashed to the Buffalo firmware 8.58 for booktyping purposes, to burn ALL my dvd-r media; it's just my preference as the pioneer favors the dvd-r format. liteon drives also favor the dvd-r format, my old SOHW-1633S and my Sony dru-710a (rebadged Liteon 1633s) and my SOHW-1693S all burn the dvd-r format beautifully...i personally recommend Liteon drives as well if Benq is not available to you (but in your case, it obviously is) hehe

good luck w/ ur decision on burners, that's my recommendations for what it's worth.

@headcase

first off,
Quote:
My ither Taiyo Yudens TTGO2's play just fine
those are NOT taiyo yudens, the TTg02 MID coding is TDK's own manufactured media, something i PERSONALLY detest, but seemingly works well for your Liteon recorder... :)

this is just a case of having a very picky recorder, in ur case, the liteon 1107 you mentioned, for some odd reason, unbeknownst to me, it PREFERS TDK's media over that of Taiyo Yudens, hey, it DOES happen from time to time...LOL

i always recommend to people to find out WHICH media your recorder/stand alone prefers before buying media in large quantities, it's RARE that Taiyo Yuden media is not well received by a standalone, but it DOES happen from time to time.

you basically have 2 choices to resolve ur issue:

1. purchase another inexpensive stand alone dvd player for your viewing pleasure (i can probably guesstimate that 80% of the real inexpensive dvd players out there today WILL play Taiyo Yuden media)

2. continue to buy/use media that your Liteon recorder appreciates, ie. TDK's own or with MANY Liteon recorders, good media made in taiwan such as Verbatim MCC coded ones or Ritek/Ricohjpn coded media. i have a close friend who is very knowledgeable about Liteon recorders, he has told me that HIS particular models actually PREFER the "made in taiwan" media over that of the "made in japan"...interesting isn't it? he uses a LOT of Ritek media on his Liteon recorders and they play back beautifully.

anyways, you could go either way, ur choice as to which is more cost-effective/less trouble for u~

docTY~

edit: @cincyrob OEM = original equipment manufacturer (so, in the case for OEM benq drives, it's made by Benq, but without all the "bells and whistles" (ie. cables, screws, fancy retail packaging found in "retail" boxes) software included with OEM (bare drive only) vary from company to company, benq for example, does include a OEM copy of nero with their drives)

update: @headcase, what particular backups are proving to be problematic in your liteon recorder? this MIGHT come down to a burning issue/software burning issue IF other Taiyo Yuden backups DO play in ur standalone...need more info to help troubleshoot.

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03

Even though the 1650 "does favors the DVD+R format", you also state "you will not go far wrong in either format" and "it DOES burn dvd-r format very well too"; thus, I interpret the term "favor" to mean a very slight and minimal bias and not a deciding factor.

Quote:

I guess being cheap and not wanting to throw my inventory away could be reason why I would "insist" on DVD-R :-).

Since my entire DVD burning experience has been with DVD-R, I have no idea what the advantages are of the + format. Briefly, what other advantage does +R format have over -R or kindly point me to a FAQ/ref thread.

Nearly all comments found here, in other forums, and those posted by Newegg buyers of the 1640/1650/1655 drives, concur these are great drives at very low prices, so I'll get the 1650, don't need the LS feature (28 minutes to scrawl the graphic - pls - give me a break)

My experience is the TYGxx bad disc rate is less 1% too. I got lured into believing they were ALL good and quit doing the post burn checks I used to do with less reliable media. I guess I need to go back to giving each a physical look-see and maybe even have to play the burned disc and play a few seconds of each chapter. Hate to have to do this but I don't see much alternative to ensure I am getting a solid burn on every disc. I have a VERY LOW tolerance for bad burns.

@garmoon - thx for the newegg tip. It is the best deal I could find today as well. Loaded the cart for shipping monday!

thx again.

You will be pleased. I know I have. It's the only thing that comes in the box. No software. Just download Qsuite here and also manuals if you need them.

@cincyrob

Me too here in Ohio and I live in a dry hole, they closed up my Circuit City and Office Depot. So ordering online from the reputable dealers is the way to go, plus there is no tax on my purchase. In the long run it comes out cheaper especially with the free shipping. My two cents

@DocTY
I just wanted to think everybody for this thread, especially Doc for starting it.

I have been useing Verbatim Data Life 8X -R's for over a year and have not made the jump to TY. I buy my DVD accessories from primarily Newegg and Supermedia Store. I just received an e-mail from Supermediastore for TY 8X DVD-R's 200 pack for $63.99 with free cd paper sleeves and free shipping.

Anyway I think I'm going to make the jump to TY. I have alway's used the -R's just because of older DVD Player's we have in the house and in the family. I have never had an issue yet.

What I am getting to is my NEC burner does not booktype so I have always used the -r's. I have however updated my frimware twice with newer update's since I've owned the computer. I'm a little scared of cross flashing for bitsetting. Maybe I will post later the actual burner so someone can help me out.

Anyway I am going to continue buying the -r's and until then. I just wanted to chime in and let everyone know thanks for the thread and a heads up on the TY's and Supermediastore.

Yeah I belong to Sams, BJ's and my daughter belongs to Costcos. I usually find that the wholesale clubs don't have media as cheap as the retail when on sale, or even online. Bought some CD's from them cause I backup audiobooks and that uses a lot of disks but the ones I got from BJ's were Moser Bauer and really were crumby, but the Sam's were Maxell and are Taiyo Yuden which are really sweet.

@fatstrat~

ur welcome~ :) hehe, it's good to hear from people that have read through my thread and have gained/learned a thing or two, that was the main purpose and i'm glad that it's helped you even a little bit~

as to your NEC, obviously you have researched a little bit as with modified/hacked firmware, it IS possible to bitset/booktype using a NEC (i prefer the Liggy & Dees firmware myself) :) but i have an older NEC, the 3520a; but it's a solid burner on my 3rd computer~ :)

as to sticking with DVD-R format, as i always suggest to people, if it ain't broke, why fix it? i'm glad that you started using GOOD DVD-R media to begin with, i rarely use DVD-R format now since i've made ALL my drives "bitset capable" thru hacked firmware or not and have just become too comfortable booktyping all my DVD+R format to go back to DVD-R again~ :) the very few DVD-R i use now are for my family's picky Toshiba player that won't play DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom for the LIFE OF THEM~ strange, but i don't know why it's like that..just real picky i guess, but it LOVES TY DVD-R, so when i am forced to use DVD-R on those rare occassions, it's TYs for me~ (TYG01/TYG02/TYG03) whichever happens to be closest to my computer at the time~ LOL

i have used a few hundred of the Verbatim DVD-R in the past, but IN MY OPINION, the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R format is "better" on MY particular setups compared to that of the MCC produced Verbs, but that's just ME, diff. setups will result in diff. opinions of media~ i will never dispute what "works well for someone" on THEIR own setups, even if it's completely opposite of what works well for me~ the key is to find "what works well for YOU," once you find that out for yourself, don't worry about others disagreeing w/ your choice in media, everyone has their own OPINIONS about media...

for example, i HATE TDK's own manufactured media with a passion, i've seen some "senior members" here on AfterDawn RECOMMEND TDK as if it were "god's gift to man in optical media"...hey, we all have our own OPINIONS, nobody will ever convince me that TDK's media is good, much like the ones i tell how crappy I PERSONALLY feel TDK's media is, they will never change either~ :) we can all be a bit stubborn at times, but if you've been "burnt" in the past (no pun intended) you will know first hand what it is like to despise a particular media (juss take a look at all the flaming going on with Memorex media here on AD, many people have not had good success with Memorex media, namely the CMC MAG manufactured ones, but there are going to be generalizations made here regardless of one's knowledge of the whole thing) :)

im just rambling now, petty "blanket statements" aside, i wish you the best of luck w/ ur new TYs; that price/deal from supermediastore is def. a good one considering it's free shipping and free sleeves too~ :)

feel free to come on back and let us know about how it all turns out for u, whether good or bad :)

We should start our own Ohio thread. I'm about 1/2 hour from Toledo, but I don't think I live in Michigan like most of them do, my loyalties lie towards Cleveland sports!!! They say Ohio is slow and the people slower, but we must have something good going on to be sharing information on good media/ burning practices on Doc's great thread.

Just curious to all those posting who pursue hunting and buying media from brick and morter. Why? It seems like a pot shot to what exact OEM media you get and there are real risks of making bad burns that can't be worth it. There is a fair chance that what you get in that cakebox is not the same at each buy. Maybe you save a few cents per disc but with gas higher than 3 bucks and counting vehicle wear and tear, I don't think there is any cost savings. And if your time is worth much of anything, I can't see making a trip just for media.

Online - no hassle, save time, energy, gas; high chance of getting exact quality media each buy.

One reason I go to Brick and Mortar stores, they are close and they have good sales on the media I want to buy. I know how to get, so far, TYs from Sony sales and Verbatims are on sale just about twice monthly somewhere. I like the hunt. You might find unadvertized bargains looking around. That's how I got my 160GB second internal HDD from best buy for $40 with rebates. It also seems I get better prices for TY labelled Sonys +Rs, than TY +Rs on line.

windtrade you are absolutly 100% right, I use to go out and search and tried finding good media, after all the waste of time and money and dissapointment, so getting good media of the net is way better even if it does cost a slite more, plus getting good media from a place like supermediastore.com is like 100%, I always get good ty's from them with no problems, it's a no brainer.
