my NEC is still going strong too, it's an oldie (3520a) but a good, stable survivor!

since you are using the DVD-R format for your older drive, i would definitely suggest you stick w/ the TYG02s, since i can only imagine that the firmware for the 1300a is not updated as frequently as you would like it to be to recognize the newer/faster media available now~ :)

the most recent one i could actually find is dated back to July 29th, 2004! 1.0C is the revision number :) that's almost 2 years ago, you got yourself one of the O.G. drives (original gangsta) LOL hardcore baby! hehehe

Actually the fw on my burner is 1.0b which is from the NEC site did not do the 1.0c. It is partially recognizing 16x media, but it burns it fine. NEC really knew what they were doing when they made the drive, I remember when I bought it was 200 bucks on sale for 149.00 which was a lot of money back then.

One thing CincyRob. When I used CloneDVD2, I would get spotty results at times. I get very good quality when I use Nero Recode and DVD Region+CSS Free. The best way to do it is with DVDRB+CCE, but that takes forever. CCE makes 4 passes by default, but the quality is amazing. If you use that method, you'd probably want to set it before you go to bed, work, etc.

What version of CCE are you using, CCE Basic will only do 2 passes by default that is all. The other versions you can control the number of passes I have CCE 2.67 and it will do the number I tell it to do.

Dunno which version, the pay one. It makes four Passes by default with The Film Machine and Avi2DVD, those're the only things I've used it with. Never tried it with DVDRB.

I have never used The Film Machine so I don't know about that program but CCE Basic the 60.00 program will only do 2 passes. The other versions of CCE will do more passes but you can control that number is RB by changing the settings, and you should be able to adjust the number in other program. Doing 4 passes will take forever and IMO anything above 3 does not change the output that much.

since I am loathe to give up my old NEC1300a, it is such a trouper, I have to use -R media
Well guy's this is the burner I was talking about earlier in this thread. I do have the 1.0C firmware installed and I am unable to booktype. I too still only use -R's on this burner. I did see the link you posted Doc for the hacked firmware, but I'm still to scared to change since I'm haveing good luck with -R's.

I should get me TY's from Supermediastore Wednesday and can't wait!

:) @ fatstrat

well, the NECs will NOT be "booktype capable" unless you use a modified firmware, official firmwares do NOT support this feature (much like Pioneer burners, that's the only reason i cross-flashed mine w/ japanese buffalo firmware, funny name i know~ hehe) so, when you feel comfy or are ready to take a risk, that link i posted before is THE PREMIER place to find everything NEC related~ :)

but as with all things, "if it's not broken, why fix it?" :) if you have continued success with DVD-R format, i don't see why you would want to run the risk of cross-flashing and using DVD+R format just to "booktype" DVD+R to dvd-rom~ :)

i think it comes down to how high you curiousity level is to "try something new"...that's MY problem, i'll flash a drive 100x times just to test out different firmwares from diff. authors to see which one works the best for ME; for me, flashing drives is as simple for me to accomplish as it is for someone to update/install a program like AnyDVD (which lately seems to have a new version every few days LOL).
i think i've flashed my own Pioneer dvr-109 so many times by now that it's BLIND~ hehe

anyways, may you have continued success w/ your NEC and DVD-R media, if the urge/need arises in the future and you want to "make the jump to DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom," might be a good idea to bookmark that website now for future reference~

docTY~

I have no problems burning with -R's on this drive, it does them well. Never any CRC errors and scans are always good, the burner is consitent when it burns, if you tell it 4x the buffer fills and it never varies. No issues with playback either. Yes it would be nice to booktype with it, but I figure it runs now and I will just let it burn itself out, or die of old age.

Been busy at for work, getting a better job. More money, he he he.
Have you run a disk defrag and error check lately on the hard drive you are burning from? What has worked for me what I have learned here from the old pros is to run defrag and error check as much as possible, especially if you burn/delete a large number of files.
Second, I have been burning the Verb 16X and TYG003 16X at 8-12X and not having any problems, as an experiment, tried a few at 16X and still saw no problems, but for safety and quality, went back down to 8 and 12 speed.
This might not affect your burning speed but makes me feel better,

I use the maxell lens cleaner once in awhile on my burners (non laptop) - I do a lot of burning - well actually used like 2x maybe on drives almost 2 years old. Haven't had any problems with it.
I have it on the dvd players too.
My mom has a DVD player (brand new) that wasn't playing the backup's I did for her. She used a lens cleaner and same discs are now playable.

I was under the impression that " Maxell" Media MIJ was "Taiyo Yuden" but under the Manufacture name ands Id it still has Maxell not taiyo yuden under it.... by the bar code it said MIJ

Made in Japan maxell media is made by Hitachi of Japan.. Excellent, high quality media. It's getting harder for me to find it,but the +8x maxell full hub white inkjet printable are loaded with them. But,taiwan makes those same exact discs as well in the full hubs.

Here's some of the hitach maxell codes:

-4x: Mxl-Rg02
-8x: Mxl-Rg03
+8x: Maxell-002-00

You can get some crap cmags or pretty decent Riteks in the dash format. The plus format is very good, either Maxell-002-00 or Ritek-R03 in the +8x or Ricohjpn-R01 in the older +4x. I can't complain about maxell's plus format, not so fortunant for their dash. Lots of cmag reports are coming in for their dash/taiwanese 8x media.

let me dispell this COMMON false assumption now, Maxell media MIJ as saugmon said, is made by Hitachi company in Japan; however, Maxell at ONE POINT did in fact use Taiyo Yuden as their manufacturer in their older media, but this is the ONLY instance of TY being used in Maxell (the brand) history...

in the 4x DVD-R MIJ, the infamous TYG01s were used back then...i have quite a few of these myself and they are every bit as good as the unbranded TYG01s that i used to be able to get my hands on from supermediastore/meritline/etc.. :) they have long since stopped production of the TYG01s, but these were in fact found under the Maxell brand 4x rated DVD-R MIJ :)

happy hunting all, Taiyo Yuden does NOT MAKE 8x/16x dvd-r/dvd+r media for MAXELL brand, only in the 4x DVD-R did they ever

A virtual 'rainbow' of colors on my my latest
Nero speed test on a TYG02 disk at 4x.

It was DVDD'ed and shrunk and burned with Nero 6.

I wondered about a couple things.

The speed test is showing about 92% quality.

How izzat? The source disk itself is not new by any means.

How does this affect the outcome?

Other thing is I had one disk at 95% with about a
jillion PI errors (in excesas of 300,000 anyway.)

What does such a large number mean?

HOT DOG!!!!!!. just did my first burn with my new TY's backed up Slingblade. watching it now cant tell from the real deal. i have backed it up on a 16x+r verb and you can see the difference in the to backups. granted when i did the first backup it was before i had a firmware update, and i just used a dvd lens cleaner on my player.lol.
but man clearest picture yet.
@docTY.
im not gonna use anything but TY's from now on. might cost me a little more than the verbs i have been getting, but worth it...
now i have about 100 verbs to collect dust..lol
