I had a weird experience with my TY's yesterday: the
disk quality jumped down to 93% and stayed there but all the
PI errors were unusually low.

I'm perplexed.

Please give more info, which burner, firmware up to date, what was the burn speed, a Nero Burn Log if possible, and any other info to help us figure out what is up.

If i'm right, the media ID code can be faked,so those who would like to get the real Taiyo made DVDs can't just take the results obtained by DVD Identifier for granted.Am i right here?

But what about the inner hub code which appears on the DVD?Can this one also be faked or can it be taken as the real guide to know if the DVD in hand is a genuine Taiyo or not?
YES, u are correct in your first assumption~ :)

your 2nd question, to MY knowledge, the inner hub coding has YET TO BE FAKED, ONLY Taiyo Yuden puts these on their genuine TYs as i have NOT seen this (ie. a fake inner hub coding) on any other "brands" that use Taiyo Yuden as their manufacturer~ you can almost be 100% certain that if you find the CORRECT/CORRESPONDING inner hub coding on the media, it is genuine/authentic Taiyo Yuden...

the inner hub codings and their corresponding rated speed/format is found on my very 1st post wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy back on page 1 in this thread, hehe. :)

Thanks everyone for replying my earlier post.

You're right when you said that the easiest way to get the real Taiyo media is to buy them online at reputable stores such as supermediastore, meritline and rima. Then you won't have any doubt whether they are real ones or fake ones.

But my problem is that i'm not from U.S nor from Europe.I live in Mauritius(but actually in Shanghai) and there,i'm almost sure that noone has ever heard about the so famous and reputable Taiyo Yuden media.Plus,i don't know if these stores mentioned earlier can ship to Mauritius. If can,i would be a bit worry about the condition of the products when reach the final destination because of bad and careless handling during shipping(mostly international shipping).I know that if you are not satisfied with the product or if it's damaged you can get them replaced but it's a bit too complicated that way.

So a bit of hunting(as said by windtrade)in Shanghai may then be more suitable. It's only by making some research from the net that i found afterdawn forum and thanks to it(to docTY's thread) that my interest for Taiyo's media has started. From that moment i said to myself that i will have to get these famous Taiyos and that's how luckily i've found a store here in Shanghai where some few 50-pack spindles of Verbatim DVD+R 8X were available. But at that time of the first purchase it was kind of gambling as i couln't say if they were really Taiyo Yuden ones only by looking at the packing where it is written "made in Japan".But onced reached home and after matching the results i got with the ones posted by docTY,then i was almost sure that i got the real ones.

Now i hope,as said by doc TY,that the inner hub coding has not yet been faked,as mine corresponds to those he posted on the very first page of his thread.

Wo!!!!i think i've been writing a bit too long this time,so gonna stop here.

But thanks to all of ya for all the precious informations and replies you are putting together in this thread to make it the BEST place to jump in when looking for or sharing about any info about any Taiyo media!!!!!

For aabbccdd, I know this is not the thread to use but for right now it's the only place I can find you, I know your an avid user of clone, I ran into a problem and wonder if you can help, I did try to use clones tech support but they say its temporaraly down for now, when I click on my clone icon of course the page comes on, than I click on clone dvd like I always did before, than the title configration window comes on, I than click on the box above on the right with that arrow, it gives two options, D:/VIDEO_TS or under it says browse, I tried ever folder under browse and none of that worked, so I try D:/VIDEO_TS than I get this message from clone.
D:/VIDEO_TS
D:/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO:unable to open file
this devise is not ready
please be sure that all required files are ready and try again.
now several days ago I did empty my temporary folders bin to clean up a lot of crapola, I hope I didnt pull a crapolo in doing so, because I'm not really computer savvy I just can't understand what went wrong, do you have a suggestion, thanks.

aabbccdd,

I just wanted to second the great advice that aabbccdd gave.

I use Ccleaner and CloneDVD2, as well as another great product I purchased that came with the price lowered when the products were bundled together.

CloneDVD2 is a very fast product and seems too fast and simple to be as effective as it is.
I personally, like to first create an image file on my drive, then check out my results first, before burning. Burning from a image file is the fastest type of burn. All of the encoding and formatting has been done already.

I cannot say enough on how crucial and wonderful the "donationware" product Ccleaner is. I just got alerted and installed a free upgrade yesteraday.
It is better than any commercial product that does the same thing. erasing those secret "index.dat" files is agreart thing as well.

I can tell you that since I started using Ccleaner, my spyware/adware software usually never finds anything !! I remove ALL of my cookies every day as well lith Ccleaner, although it is important for youor browser to keep accepting cooking or one will be limited to which sites one can go to. In general, any inconvenience the Cookie removal might have, I believe is MORE than made up by removing me as a target for all sorts of Corporate nonsense and garbage on my PC.

Running Ccleaner, is sort of like booting your PC, without haveing to boot up. There are countless times that I recall my PC running slower than it should, browsing slower than it should, having multimedia software hand or slow down, etc.

I would like to ask for comments on vendors other than Meritline and Supermedia. Not because I want to criticize those vendors at all, but to let all know that there are alternatives to those two.

For getting some "official" TYs, I have used some and not used some of the ones I will mention. I would really like for others to comment and maybe we can come up with a moving list of reliable vendors.

a. http://www.newegg.com
a1. The TY store at newegg. Just saw a 50 pack of TY DVD-Rs for $20.99 and a 50 pack of TY DVD+Rs for $23.99. DVD-R 50 pack of white inkjet printables for $21.99.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Pagesize=100&Page=1...
b. http://www.rima.com
c. http://www.neato.com
c1. http://www.neato.com/neato_prodtest_search.asp?mscsid=S44GFMECU6C...
c. http://www.amazon.com

The vendors I personally like are those that I have something "go wrong with". All vendors look great when things go well, but I feel that when there are some issues with a purchase (especially mail order), is when one really finds out what a vendor is like.

I have been enjoying having a Canon IP4200 and doing inkjet direct to media printing, thus eliminating the use of labels, therefore I look for white inkjet printable media. great for writing on as well.

@jolo,
one other merchant I have used before to get TY disks is http://www.shop4tech.com
Personally I have never had a problem with them, but as a cautionary note I believe they were a source of fake TY a couple of years ago as reported by some members.

I too have used Shop4tech and got genuine TY's, however I was cautious about it, and although there were no problems I still stick with SMS or Meritline. Guess it is just a trust issue.

@Rob,
No, I have two Sony Burners, DRU-510A, and a DRU-800A (Lite on rebadged). Your burner may not work with Nero, if so scan the boards there are more programs out there which do the same thing which will work with your HP

I have version 4.36

I think the value line is just older stock/excess inventory. I've used HUNDREDS of the value line 8X inkjet printables to date, and they score just as well in CD/DVDSpeed as my premium line does. I have had ZERO problems with the value line.

the innerhub says drm2gg0001 if that helps ya out..
that is Sony's own media...as much as the inner hub coding plays a relevant part to Taiyo Yudens, i don't have enough Sony's to really make an honest distinction between the various codes on Sony's own media...i have in fact used both the MIT and MIJ Sony's with the same MID coding, as i mentioned, decent stuff; but since i now only use certain manufacturers on my media, PERSONAL PREFERENCE again, i am not the one to ask regarding Sony media (this is due to a very limited use of it...less than 100 of Sony's own media in all the rated speeds and formats ie. 8x, 16x; 400+ of the Sony MIJ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02s) :)

been so busy overclocking my system last few days, playing catchup with my TY thread now hehe :)

have a good one all, regarding the valueline vs premiumline question earlier, the difference between the two FOR MOST PEOPLE is not even noticeable, the chances of getting a "bad batch" for either line is the same...i happen to get identical quality scores regardless if i use the valueline TYs or the premium line, i naturally have MANY of both :) IMHO, if buying online, as long as it's from a reputable source, ie. supermediastore, meritline, rima, even shop4tech; i see nothing really that STANDS OUT if one chooses to save a few bucks and get the "valueline" ones...whether shiny silver or inkjet printables in the tape wrapped spindles...shop around for the best shipped price, after thousands used, FOR MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, i have had equal success with my valueline as i have with my premiumline, if i made anyone a backup using my valueline TYs and my premiumline TYs, i am more than willing to bet they would NOT know the difference between the two~ :)

may you have continued success finding these rare "gems" in the rough :) i can imagine how difficult it must be obtaining them in your neck of the woods as they are NOT readily available...good luck buddy, it's a shame these big online retailers here in the U.S. don't ship overseas to you; but i can also imagine the price of shipping alone would make the price on the media itself seem totally ridiculous. end up paying an arm and a leg just to have some TYs and THEN you have to HOPE that they are not damaged thru customs...etc...what a big headache~ :( you can pretty much forget about getting an RMA...that would take MONTHS! and would cost you entirely TOO MUCH to ship them back for an exchange...

Doc, any info on why rebranded TY's are getting so hard to find these days?
Really haven't seen any on store shelves in about one month. We need a few prescriptions for Tys here. Less than 100 left now.

@blivetNC

as to WHY rebranded TYs are becoming more and more scarce locally, i think that is very much dependent on what those branded companies purchase from TY, whether they have chosen to go to lower cost manufacturers for higher profit margins or their contracts with Taiyo Yuden need to be renegotiated or for whatever other corporate reasons...we, as the consumers, will have to turn to the online retailers more frequently now to be reassured that you are getting TYs (if that's what you prefer as media of choice of course) :)

i see the benefits of just going to local stores and picking up media that works well with your particular setup, but personally, it's gotten to a point where nowadays, YOU JUST NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GONNA GET in the newer 16x rated speeds by various brands, if one finds joy in sifting thru the MIT and MIJ spindles (if they can even find the MIJ anymore), to each their own...when it comes to TYs, my only suggestion for 100% accuracy with NO GUESS WORK involved is to just order online from the reputable stores mentioned all throughtout this thread...

it's happened on a few occassions in the past even with the 8x rated media, the brand switched manufacturers mid-stream and what was ONCE Taiyo Yuden produced, then became a much worse product (my OWN OPINION of course, this is naturally concerning TDK) :)

at least locally, from what i've observed, the only brand that is really RELIABLE in terms of getting good quality media EVERY TIME, is Verbatim~ :) at least here in the U.S., i have YET to see a single layer Verbatim that was not MCC (Mitsubishi CHemicals Corp) produced...all MIT too~ no need for searching MIT vs MIJ...etc..etc..

i'm still waiting to see if ANYONE has gotten the YUDEN000T03s 16x DVD+R LOCALLY under the Sony brand yet, so far, i haven't heard of it happening...

happy hunting guys...good luck
