@Yoshua

someone is envy of you. ;-) I wish i could get some too.

@cincyrob

how did you get the ty finally? what you told them after they asked you about homepage and other things? I didn't get any reply from germany. Will try other europe represantive. If you can give me some tips, i will be glad. As for my other attempts to buy ty, it's useless. even at amazon they ask for shipping twice the price of the dvds.

Maximum real world longevity experience is still unknown as some claims of 100 years have obviously not passed. Practically, it seems likely that the discs, stored under optimal conditions, will easily endure far past the extinction of several generations of technology.

If you REALLY have to keep this data around there are much larger issues than worrying about the data on any reputable DVD, irrespective of the type (-, +-, -RW, etc).

Here's my real world example. I still have handful of "archived" original 360k 5 1/4 discs, maybe 15-20 years old, that still work. The data is fine but useless. I've not had a PC that even has one of those old drives much less still have a working copy of dBase, Quatro Pro, or Lotus 123 that would even load or run. Ditto on even the newer 1.2mb 3 1/2 discs.
What I'm saving are DVD quality captures of TV shows, short films, commercials, infomercials and spots of the sort not likely to wind up on commercial DVD. The sort of thing companies like Something Weird reissue 20 or 30 years later. Me and my weirdo friends like this kind of thing. (One of them even has the Tom Vu infomercial--on BetaMax.)

So as I said, optimized for higher speeds and archival quality would seem to be mutually exclusive. And to us, archival quality doesn't mean 100 years--we won't be around in 100 years. We just don't want 'em gone while we can still enjoy 'em.

Just popping back to reply about a page back someone had problems with a few discs from supermediastore, but my order came out fine and the TYGO2's at 8x burn gave me an 96 quality score with Nerotools.

q12300, wow, sorry to hear that, I didnt know they do not ship to your country, if I may add a suggestion, and I guess this all depends on how far you are willing to go to get the best media out there, and mind you there will be one extra cost, you will have to pay double the shipping.
I don't know what your finaces are, but if I wanted the media bad enough and was willing to spend a couple extra dollars I would order at least SMS offer of 400 ty's, or at the least the 200 package, I'm sure you might have a trusted friend in the US somewhere and ask your friend to accept a shipment for you and than send it to you by reg. mail from the US, find out what the complete cost would be and pay them upfront or after whatever is more comfortable for the both of you, if your friend is relaible and trust worthy what have you got to lose but an extra shipping cost and 400 ty's should go a long way.

Thanks for the tip. great idea. completely forgot. I have a friend in usa who is trustworthy. I have to check how much it will cost me with all these shipping. The places who wanted to ship to israel asked twice the price of the dvds.I believe that by normal mail will cost much less.

I can buy in israel fujifilm=taiyo yuden with 0.68$ and about the same verbatim. I hope that with all the shipping i will still get it cheaper.

i found a nice shop in canada too. ats. but shipping was also very high.

btw, if you know a good shop in europe too, i will be glad to know. My brother will be in germany/switzerland maybe he will bring me.

There is someone in these forums who also wants to buy and he is willing to split the price.

I don't know if they offer it for overseas shipping, but here in the States the postal service offers "Media Mail" as a shipping option, this includes books, tapes, CD, and DVD computer disks, may want to give it a try. I believe that it costs much less than regular surface or air mail. I hope you are safe whereever you are in Israel right now, Our prayers and blessings are with you.

@blivetNC

Thanks a lot for your prayers and blessing. Me and whole people in israel appreciate it very much. Right now i am in a safe place, but next week i have to return back to the unsafe area. BUT we are strong. and there is no doubt that we will win in the end. It's just a matter of time.

As for the media mail, can you give me some names/links? I am a total noob in this media mail. I suspect that all those that agreed to send to israel asked 60,80$ is due to insurance. I buy a lot on ebay. I never paid so much for shipping. maximum was 20$.

The most annoying thing is that on amazon i saw some sellers which send to asia, but only to japan, new zealand. I guess i have to ask them a sarcastic question in which continent israel exist.

Sup all. Been away for awhile, busy with other duties. Those're behind me, so I figured I'd stop by and see what's going on. Sup Doc, Mort, and everyone else. Forgive my laziness, not wanting to read the last 30 pages lol. Have there been any new advances in TY's or Verb's? The Yuden000T03's have been circulating in North America for awhile now, how do they measure up to the Yuden000T02's?

Hail Tokijin

This place seems dead lately, not much going on. I think Doc is on a hiatus for a while as well. As for the T03s, I've never used them; have a ton of Sony T02s to burn first. My wife thinks I'm a disc packrat. I have to agree.

Nice to hear from you guys. I know I can find Doc at DVDhounds if need be, just too lazy to sign up there lol. I'd still stick with Yuden000T02's from what you guys have said. I guess it's only natural that 16x media isn't as good as 8x media, especially since Yuden000T02 is some of the most reliable DVD media ever made. I've got a modded Xbox since I was last here. Yuden000T02 works perfectly for Xbox and PS2 backups. It's been quite awhile since I burned at 4x, been burning at 8x for three or four months now. My CD/DVD Speed scores are 1-3 points lower when burning at 8x, not enough to notice any difference, and I can't really say I scan backups anymore, really no point with TY's. Thanks for the input guys. I have feeling Doc will show up, he's got a radar for TY related questions.

Lucky me, i still have some verbatim.

btw, SMS is supermediastore?

Thanks a lot for all the wishes. ;-)

I had been using Tayo Yuden 4x white printable discs for a while and they were always flawless.

Then one day I was told that the 4x were no longer beinbg produced so I had to go with 8x white printables. Well the first batch were terrible, glitches and jittery playback in all but the best DVD players. The 2nd batch seem to be better but still no where near as smooth as the 4x discs. The disc codes all have the GG00XXXX and I burn at 1x speeds so I pretty dissapointed and I'ds love to get a hold of some more 4x discs.

Try burning faster, burning at 1x is only necessary if you have an ancient burner/PC. Make sure your firmware is up to date and your burner is in DMA mode.

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatibility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Here is an interesting bit of news, personally I think it is just another MS bit of bs. With todays tech, I don't see the necessity of burning this slow unless you are using bad media.
Quote:
Burn Vista slower or risk data loss, warns Microsoft
Posted by Dan Bell on 10 July 2006 - 17:09 - Source: APC Start

D4rk0n3 used our news submit to tell us that Microsoft has warned beta testers in release notes, as recently as build 5456.5, to be sure and burn the Vista ISO at very low speeds. They say that a key reason they have found for installation failure, is corrupted or missing data, or at least the inability of the drives to read back the information from the media.

They are recommending burns at 1x or 2x in order to get a reliable result. They say that many DVD burners cannot burn reliably at high speed. We can read the notice in this quote from APC Data and also their thoughts on the issue.

When burning your DVD?s please do so at 1x or 2x and CRC them when done using the CRC utility posted on the Connect site. The customer experience improvement telemetry that we?ve been getting back on Beta 2 shows that not quite three quarters of setup failures are the result of a failure to read from the media. (End of Microsoft message)

Testing shows that burning at slower speeds greatly increases the chances of a good burn. It has been the subject of rumour for a long time that DVD burning is a risky way of backing up data, because the organic dye layers used in the disc are just that ? organic. They decompose over time, so that patches of a burned disc may become unreadable. But it has been difficult to get a picture for exactly how great the problem is: the CATS DVD analysers required to scientifically test burned DVDs are rare and incredibly expensive. But this sort of data from Microsoft is helpful: statistical analysis on such a wide base of people shows that data integrity on optical discs is a significant problem, even as soon as a disc is burned.

Hmmm, well I think this logic is a bit flawed. Any comments out there on why people are not getting good burns? You may also wish to ponder this issue in the Club CD Freaks Blank Media Forum. There's already a discussion going on in there, concerning this very subject.

What the hell is going on here? Bad drive - bad media. I have read the Pioneer drivers don't necessarily report PI errors and failures but this kind of error rate? The scan disc function shows the disc is completely readable and it seems to play alright. Any ideas?

edit - I ran another disc from an old batch and it came up looking fine so the drive is alright. I just got a batch of 100 discs that are CRAP. TYG02 "genuine" from Rima.

Then again - the burner could have gone bad recently and the media is ok.

I've got a new drive and new media arriving in a couple of days. I'll do more experiments to see what is the real problem.

I will be very bummed if I have to go back and recopy a mass of discs.

Yeah that sounds like total BS ArnieBear. Probably MS didn't pack the iso well or something, and their using the DVD Speed as a cover for their own incompetence. Bad Media was the first thing that entered my mind as well. Those of us who frequent help forums know how little the average person knows about DVD media. Chances are these people bought those Imation's at Wal-Mart for the tempting price of $20 for a 50 pack, unaware that they're using CMC Mag or worse, or that quality media is much cheaper online. Sounds like pure damage control, most likely it's user error or MS saving face.
