lp531, WOW, I to just ordered 200 ty's from SMS, my order was for DVD+R, I certainly hope I don't run into the same problem you are having, I should get my order any day now, I will keep everybody posted on how things come out, I also must say you are the first person I ever heard that ran into a ty problem from SMS, lets hope its a fluke, I also heard from other SMS customersthat any time someone had a problem they always fixed it, call them right away and I think they will help you, good luck.

Thanks Fred,
I never thought to call SMS about problem, figured they would tell me it's my drive, which I know it's not. Will call them tomorrow.

No problem lp, just so you know, I do remember about a year ago one fellow also got a bad batch, or so he said, he called them and they immediatly sent him another batch without charging him for S&H, what I don't remember is if he had to spend his own money on shipping the other batch back, but regardless, they fixed his order without any problems, please let us know how things work out because everybody here at AD speeks very highly of SMD, also tell them you are a member of AD, believe me they know that AD members shop SMS regularly, it would be very stupid of them if they try and give you a run around, so don't forget, keep us posted., Fred.

WOW,Thanks Fredbun,
I will definetely call them tomorrow. You are right, I only bought them because of the A.D. recommendations, so it would be foolish of them to leave me hanging.
I don't think I had a problem on the 1st spindle, I definetely can't say that about the last three.
I'm afraid to even put them in my drive, it's that bad!

@LP531

i've been making myself a bit scarce lately on AD as i'm taking a bit of a "vacation" from here, but before i go, i would like to address YOUR issue~ :)

you say that you've used 150 out of 400 thus far, meaning, since you ordered the premiumline TYG02s, they came in spindles of 50 each...so, can i assume you've gone through 3 spindles at this point, before running into a wall on the 4th spindle?

and because of this NEW problem you are afraid to use up the remaining batches of your TYs? just out of curiousity, out of the PROPERLY working 150 you've used already, could you tell me the "inner hub reading" on those WORKING ones? it might be a bit difficult to see, it's located just where the "dye" part begins right outside of the clear part near the hole in the center; but it will be along the lines of "GG00xxxx" where the "xxxx" will be a numerical value that i would be interested in knowing...this pertains to the "batch number" of your particular media...

also, the problematic TYs you are having major issues with, could you tell me if the "inner hub coding" on THESE faulty ones are the same as the working ones? or is it a diff number/coding?

as i've mentioned in the past, there is still very much of a chance to get a "bad batch," EVEN with the premiumline TYs, it DOES happen and ALL manufacturers are prone to "bad batches" regardless of how "spotless" their reputation MAY be...TY is NO exception! :)

much as fredbun suggested, i would call up supermediastore.com and politely, but sternly, ask for a replacement...they could easily look up your past order number if you don't have it handy when calling...tell them precisely the problems you are having with these newer spindles you are using, they should be able to resolve the problem with an easy replacement. :)

lastly, i have a LITEON SOHW-1633S myself, what firmware are you currently using? i've had good success with their latest, BS0Y, found here, released earlier this year:

http://www.liteonit.com/DOWNLOADS/ODD/SOHW-1633S/firmware/DR16BS0Y.zip

i'm the type that ALWAYS tries the latest and newest firmwares for all the drives i own, despite the problems i read from others with firmwares, it's about finding the "sweet spot" for your specific hardware, not what others tell you on the internet...

i was using BSOS for the longest time prior to updating the firmware, had no issues with that particular one either...just curious as to which one YOU are currently using...

since you've got quite a few burns in the past already on your drive, i would also suggest a can of compressed/bottled air if you haven't done so already (few quick bursts while the drive tray is open could help clear some of the debris/dust that might have settled internally over time) it could only help :)

i'm leaning more towards a "Defective/bad batch" of TYs at this point, i've never reached the point where i would be "scared of burning," with the problems exhibited by ONLY those TYs at the moment for you, i would get a replacement before you start having nightmares about Taiyo Yudens at night~ :) LOL

it's a fair assessment on your part to proclaim that these particular TYG02s are "the worst disc" you've ever used, cant' argue with PERSONAL experience, but before you start telling everyone you know about how much "TYs" suck, it would be wise to go through with the replacement and see if that doesn't resolve the issue first; before making such a blanket statement, because you will be met with a very large majority on here that will flame you to no end because of THEIR OWN SUCCESS with Taiyo Yudens... :)

don't worry, i won't flame you myself because that is not my style, but other TY supporters i can not control them~ LOL

my intent is to get you back up and running again WITH Taiyo Yuden media, not the other way around and suggest you burn with "other media" from now on...have faith in the quality of Taiyo Yuden, they've proved TO ME to be the "best media $$ can buy" in MY OWN EYES/SETUP, you can't deny thousands of backups that i HAVE made successfully with Taiyo Yuden and they ALL playback today~ :)

good luck w/ ur dealings w/ supermediastore.com, let us know the outcome and the few details i requested from you currently with your drive and those TYG02s...

kiv,

One thing I admire about you, and don't take this wrong, you're never short on words. Like the boss leaving instructions before going on vacation :) Writing a page is easy for you. I find it hard to finish a full paragraph sometimes. I never was much for writing. Hated english class. I envy your ability to write. Have a good one buddy and keep in touch during your absence. BTW, you never told me what became of that other topic we discussed in those pm's.

buddy, thanks for the compliments...LOL

actually, i think i did reply to the other "discussion" we had via PM, it wasn't a big deal and i had just had a long day, hence my "attitude" at the time~ :)

of course we will keep in touch while on my "vacation"...i just tend to be very verbose and try to be as complete as possible to arrive at a plausible resolution for the problems i see spring up~ :)

i type 95wpm, so that doesn't hurt either~ lol

have a good one all and may your burns be successful and of high quality!

edit: thanks for the kind regards TY4Ever, i hope you will blossom during my "away time" and take up some of the much needed slack i will be leaving behind...i have faith in you and all the confidence in the world that you will do a splendid job in my absence~ good day to you too!

Still about that particular "friend",the drive she's using is an Asus(dvd writer) DRW-1608P3S using version 1.19 firmware.Good drive or crap drive?For those who don't know what i'm talking about,let me give a little recap,she's having freezing and blocking problems while viewing a backup video burnt on a Taiyo verb DVD+R(not booktyped as writer doesn't support booktyping),but plays flawlessly on almost any stand alone players and on the drive i used to burn the media.

@aabbccdd

lol..No need to worry about your typing speed of 20wpm and about your three/four fingers typing style.....i'm same as you here!!!

ok, before i make my departure...one last comment in regards to you TY4ever :)

ironically, that Asus drive your friend has is an OEM Pioneer dvr-111 that YOU HAVE~ LOL

hahahhaha...oh, the irony of things makes me laugh...it's a good drive, overall and GENERALLY speaking, Asus is KNOWN for their quality motherboards, but their other products (namely power supplies and cases) and even optical drives are pretty good! :)

newest firmware is 1.24, found here: it might do her well to update to the newest and see if the problem persists after the update, it MAY or MAY NOT resolve the problem, either way, i don't see it hurting to try~ (unless in the unfortunate event that it makes matters worse by an improper flashing, but ASUS has a built in firmware updater in the following file, just follow the instructions and prompts and make sure there is NO DISC in the drive before updating and keep your fingers crossed the power doesn't go out) LOL

ftp://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/ODD/DVD-RW/DRW-1608P3S/DRW-1608P3S_FW124EU.ZIP

ttyl (talk to ya later) guys/gals, gonna start my "vacation" now~ :)

If Asus drives are supposed to be good ones then i guess that her firmware needs to be updated.The risk of it being shot is quite very low as her pc together with the drive are quite recent.

But,Oh Dear!!!I won't allow myself to update this thing for her,just in case things go wrong.I'll just give her the little advice instead.In this special case,verbal advice is better than manual one.

@Doc

Thanks for the precious advice Doc!really surprised to know that in fact her drive is a rebadged pioneer 111(same as mine).And yes,in this case we can really call it the "irony of things".

But i better not try to adventure myself on her pc and to cross fingers while doing the upgrade because in case something goes wrong,then i don't want to be the one whose gonna chop these crossed fingers of mine...haha!!

Have a nice vacation Doc!

@kivory666

At last i got a reply from meritline_zshop. They are indeed affiliated with the meritline web page. Unfortunatelly i got this: "FedEx international shipping for 2 pounds items to Israel is $82.57. For 4 pounds is $111.60."

Even with the outrage prices here i can buy cheaper. Why they ask so much? I contacted another company in Canada ATS, and they ask ~76$ shipping. Even wehn i buy other stuff on ebay they don't ask so much.

I guess that my wish to buy from amazon has gone to the drain.

Either i will get it if my friend will go to usa, or maybe someone from this forum will want to ship for me to israel.

I have opened 4 of 8 spindles.
I have burned 187 disc out of 400 disc's, However most disc make horrible noise while trying to spin-up.
Sounds like disc unbalanced ready to explode in drive!

I don't remember any problems on first spindle I used, I know on first disc of second spindle, Instant horrible noise. They can make noise spining-up and still burn sucessfully, most times.

However they should not make noise!!! No other disc's I have ever used Do it...

As far as Flaming TY's

I would not do that... Not my style...Bad Batches happen...

Just extremelly disapointed in first batch of TY's, I have never ordered Media online, I Hate to go to store and buy more disc's, but I have burning to do, and have No choice, not worth destroying drive over Bad Hub...or balance issue... which is what I suspect is problem...

Here are #s and 2 failed burn logs.

6 complete coasters (LN5) is on both sides of hub and printed over # below so they are obscured. I could make out these 4.

lp one question, after the last time you had trouble with that bad batch, have you tried burning with any other media disc's you might have available, I'm no where near an expert like most people on this thread, but I'm trying to use a little process of elimination, if you can succefully burn any other media you have right now besides those ty's than I would assume that it's a bad batch definatly and there is nothing wrong with your drive, but if you still get the same noise with your other media than you can assume it can be a drive problem. Either way take doc's advise and keep us posted, hope everything turns out ok.

- i'm wondering if your problem is DMA-related, though i don't recognise 'iteatapi' however, so not sure if DMS needs to be ON for all of them.

I have also been having difficulty with the TY GO2 from SMS. I have the white ink jet printable and have at least, so far, four out of 50 that have been either not recognizable when played or have errors that cause them to jerk and distort. When I try another, older supply of the TYs from SMS, they work just fine.

Yes, I have tried other media with the TY's.
No, Problems...Its just the TY's.
Maxell...13 seconds to spin-up ready to burn.
TY's...58 seconds to spin-up ready to burn, with the drive spining-up then slowing back down while drive is screaming and rattling, after all that the drive might read that the disc is there, might not...

Most of the failures were instant, can barely see start of writing process on disc, some have been over half written...the half writtens will play in my drive up until point of writing.

Im concerned about playing successfully burned movies (that made noise during burning process) in my standalone.

I am convinced it's a balance issue...or a hub issue...

Just talked to SMS they are sending me a paid return label...way to go SMS...they said I can go online and order replacements, they are slightly cheaper now...

They said I could even return sucessfully burned media If I am concerned about balance issue...Any disc I return they will credit, even non complete spindles...

Question to you All...Should I return all disc's???
Even sucessfull burn's...They seem to play fine even though they definetlly have a balance issue...
187 disc total!

@frbernard
Are you having a balance issue as I described?
Or just failed burns...

You are starting to scare me with these stories, my order arrives tomorrow from there...

Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R Silver Thermal Lacquer
100 Pack in Cake Box Spindle (Two 50-Pack Premium Line)

Taiyo Yuden Silver Thermal 8X DVD+R Media
100 Pack in Cake Box (Two 50-Pack)

My BenQ has never had a problem with any of them so I'm sure things are fine, you just brought the subject up at the wrong moment :P

Update the frimware to the one doc listed above. Your's is a few behind. May be part of the problem.

Great ram - but a lot in use - may not be playing into the problem - but keep as much ram free as possible.

Now I haven't done as many burn as the doc but have done say 1000 w/ the TYG02's plus maybe another 1000 on the different printable ones ranging from the rated burn speed's of 8x-16x. Coasters or any playback issues on many different players are few & far behind.

Try updating the firmware and see what happens. The instant burn failure can usually be resolved with a firmware upgrade when using good media.

Keep us posted!
