@TaiyoUser

You are from Israel? Didn't understand exactly what you meant by splitting the bill? You buy the TY from your friend in Japan and i split with you or you want me to buy the media and you split the bill with me?

I can try to buy from amazon. I hope there won't be a problem. Otherwise, to buy at these outrage prices in Israel, is simply nuts.

good for him. ;-)

But i am not in kasam area. You are in kasam area? I hope for your sake that not.

Outrageos prices i mean for taiyo yuden and other media as well. Verbatim to pay 3 nis per dvd is also expensive. I bought last year at office depot, when they had a deal buy 2 get 3. and it was 2.96nis. Now i run out of dvds so considering to buy taiyo yuden. BTW, i sent a request to taiyo yuden for samples. Hope i will get some.

Can you ask your friend how much it will cost? I am interested in ~50dvd maybe 75 depends on the price. I am interested in the x8 media. x16 is no use for me and it costs more.

I usually buy at ebay stuff, but since there are a lot of fakes in dvd media, i don't want to risk. So amazon looks a relatively good choice.

skads, kasam, the same nightmare. ;-(

I saw at http://www.lira.co.il/site/category.php?cat=3232 branded as Fuji. Fuji made in japan is taiyo yuden. Also Sony made in japan.

When he can send to here, let me know.
I have a friend who will probably go to usa at the end of august. I hope he can bring some. or maybe amazon will be the lucky number for me.

well, i hope you q12300 and TaiyoUser can work out something beneficial to both of ya~ :) i don't even wanna ask the price that you guys pay in Israel, by the sounds of it...it's OUTRAGEOUS! :)
besides, that's just more math for conversion into U.S. dollars and my brain is SHOT at this point~ LOL

good luck with the amazon.com route, the meritline store you referred to might be a possible choice to take if the shipping is not too incredibly high, whatever works right to get them in ur hands? hehehe...

@fredbun

VERY good purchase that you just made, excellent choice, by the manufacturer's part #, you can rest assured that you got the PREMIUM line of Taiyo Yudens 8x DVD+R
Quote:
Media ID: YUDEN00T02
Mfr part #: DVD+R47ZZSB8
good luck with those fine dvds :) i got less than a thousand left of those YUDEN000T02s, so i'm thinking of getting some more in a few months as well, that's the same exact part # i use when i order~ :)

mostly, the only part # that would constitute some NOT from the "premium line" would be : DVD-R47VAL600SK (for example), these are known as the "valueline" and are TAPE WRAPPED rather than coming in cakebox (on a spindle)...while very good in the DVD-R format, if you insist on the DVD+R format because ur burner only supports that format, then there is NOT a better choice for you than the purchase you just recently made~ good job :)

@cincyrob

LOL, serious? they ask for company info? in detail? man, good luck with that, whatever route you decide to take... :)

Speaking of Taiyo Yuden discs sold in Japan, which brand would I best buy (living in Japan) if I want the best quality Taiyo Yuden? My writer supports DVD+/-R up to x16 speed.
Is any Fuji or Sony DVD safe to buy then?

@q12300
Quote:
1. my firmware is 2.4 on a fujitsu siemens laptop. As i understand it's OEM not nec original and haven't changed the firmware
2. Can't update firmware so easily because i have only linux on my laptop. Happily deleted windows. ;-))))))))
Long live gentoo. ;-))))))))))))

I asked about updating firmware. There is a way, but i don't know if it is worth to do it because i only had problems with tdk which was written x16 but on my laptop it burned only x4. Some weird bug with this nec type and tdk. the nec found speed description x4, while with dvd identifier on windows it showed x16 speed description.
I am also hesitant about changing firmware. I want a working burner.

3. Until now i used verbatim DVD-R x8. And was very satisfied. Burned at x8. Nowadays they sell verbatim here x16 . So if i will buy x16 here (just in case i am not lucky to buy at amazon), will i have also problems? It will burn x8 or less? BTW, verbatim to buy at ebay is ok?

4. As for DL, right now it's out of the question. prices here are outrage.

5. The strtegies for the burner are set already as far as i know. BTW, if i ask taiyo yuden to send me 2 samples ( + and -r), they will send me?

6. Can you explain me this booktyping to dvd-rom? noob question. ;-)

7. Since you have used far more dvds than me, the +r TYG x8, burns ok with this burner? I just want to know, just in case. FujiFilm +r works also ok on this burner?
answers in order asked:

1+2: have no idea anything Linux related, so creaky's suggestion is the only alternative, but keeping your current shouldn't be a problem, just curious if the one you have now is the most current? 2.4 revision is most current? i don't know~ :)

3: if you've had past success with 8x DVD-R Verbatim, my only concern is that your firmware MAY or MAY NOT properly recognize the 16x rated ones...but, that can only be found out by trial and error :( i never recommend buying media off ebay, but i really don't know how unscrupulous the sellers over in Israel may be? you could give it a shot, but be prepared for something less than you expected, i wouldn't personally suggest buying on ebay, but that's just me. :) assuming your firmware CAN properly recognize the 16x rated discs, there will be no problem burning them @8x or slower...as i mentioned, i'm only worried about IF your firmware is up-to-date enough to PROPERLY recognize them to begin with...

4: fair enough :)

5: don't know if they will send you samples or not? cincyrob tried but after his most recent post, the odds are not too good for him to receive them even here in America...i would think your odds are even slimmer being international shipping, unfortunately...

6: here is a good bitsetting/booktyping guide:

http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

that pretty much explains the basics of it all, however, with our Nec slimdrive, using official firmware, to the best of my knowledge, ONLY DVD+R DLs can be booktyped, i don't know the details of YOUR particular 2.4 revision, but i'm guessing it's similar to my own...booktyping a single layer DVD+R on my laptop is unfortunately a feature i CAN NOT accomplish with my current firmware ( i'm much like you with laptops, the burner works fine right now, even if it is limited in the bitsetting dept., but it WORKS...i don't mess with it too much because laptop burners are more expensive than internal desktop burners, so replacing one is not on my "want to do list" :) )

booktyping increases compatibility on dvd+r/dvd+r DL media in standalone players, even more so than DVD-R format (which CAN NOT BE BOOKTYPED for your information) :) the guide is pretty self explanatory...

7: lastly, yes the YUDEN000T02 8x DVD+R Taiyo Yudens burn VERY NICELY with this burner, unfortunately, as i mentioned earlier, i CAN NOT booktype it to dvd-rom with this current firmware i am using, and i don't plan on using hacked/modified firmware on my laptop at this point in time~ :) fujifilm media will ALSO work with this burner, however, the quality of the "made in taiwan" with the FUJIFILM03 MID coding (8x DVD-R MIT under the Fuji brand name) is far from being considered "good quality" media~ :) in the 8x DVD+R MIT Fuji brand media, they are either ProdiscR03 or RicohjpnR02 or RitekR03 MID codings, all of which are "decent," but again, far from the quality of Taiyo Yudens...these are usually considered the "budget media" level, while decent, you could stand to do a lot better...the "made in japan" 8x DVD-R are Taiyo Yuden made, TYG02, as well as the 8x DVD+R, again Taiyo Yuden made YUDEN000T02s :)

the 16x rated Fujifilm in both formats are mostly Ritek or Prodisc made, with the occasional Philips made MID coding, so, nothing really special and you shouldn't go out of your way in obtaining any... :)

hope that covers everything~ :) good luck w/ your media quest...best of luck to you....

@kyo28

very lucky indeed that you live in Japan, the best place to purchase media...any Taiyo Yuden produced media would be fine over in your neck of the woods, but if i'm not mistaken, in Japan, TYs are sold mostly under the "That's" brand...those will definitely be Taiyo Yuden made (i believe the "THAT'S" brand is what TYs are distributed/marketed as over there) :)

i can only ASSUME that the media being sold in local retailers there have a "made in japan" country of origin, if i am wrong, please do correct me...are there any other countries that the media is manufactured amongst the various brands you have available over IN the country of Japan?? (ie. taiwan, india, singapore, good lord i hope you don't have the crappy fake Made in China/Hong Kong stuff) :)

but, yeah, if your stores carry all the major Japanese brands that we know of here in the U.S. (ie. Sony, Fujifilm), and the origin of these discs are from your home country, Japan, then these will be Taiyo Yuden made in the 8x DVD-R and 8x DVD+R formats...the quality of the discs should be identical to any other TYs found under a diff. brand name....

the 100% sure way to get Taiyo Yuden discs over there, is to buy the "THAT's" brand...i don't know the pricing over there and how much Yen is involved, but i know it's higher pricing compared to the U.S., my uncle lives and works in Tokyo and i have an aunt that works in Shibuya district, i actually got my DVD+R DL "MKM003" that he purchased locally from an electronics store in Tokyo and sent to me over here in the U.S. :) the selection, from what i hear, is quite abundant... good luck

kivory666, thank you for the superbly detailed information! That is exactly what I needed to know. I live in a small village and as such my choices are more limited than in big cities.

THATS is indeed a brand available at my local store (Yamada Denki), as well as Fuji and Sony. However, unless I am mistaken, some Fuji's are 'made in Taiwan' and some are 'made in Japan'. Which is why I was doubting to go and buy them.

To give you an idea of the choice available, here's the online store of Yamada Denki with their assortment of DVD-R's. THATS is widely available and for a reasonable price:
http://www.yamada-denkiweb.com/item/list.php/category/10/14/20/

Maybe I'll start with one pack and see how it goes. Normally, should the Taiyo Yuden code be written on the inner circle of each DVD? In that way I can check for sure they are the genuine article.

Original DVD's are very expensive in Japan and as such I want to make backups of my entire (253 discs) collection to prevent the originals to suffer from wear and tear ... but at the same time I want to use a media that can withstand the test of time.

A combination of DVD Rebuilder with CCE Basic and Taiyo Yuden discs should give decent results, I hope ... (^_^)

Thanks again for the detailed and professional explanation. It's much appreciated!

@kyo28

you are very welcome :) well, since you confirmed that SOME brands are indeed "made in taiwan" at your local stores, with such a wide selection of the "made in japan" media at your disposal, i would recommend you go w/ the "THAT's" brand, guaranteed 100% Taiyo Yudens :)

from the link you posted, i noticed the THAT's brand is quite reasonable in price, i learn something new each day, thanks for that bit of info! :)

if by Taiyo Yuden "code" you mean the laser inscribed coding that i commonly refer to as "inner hub coding" then yes~ :) ALL genuine Taiyo Yudens will have said "inner hub coding" on them, the codes will naturally vary as outlined in my very 1st post in my thread here :) as to the MID coding, that will need to be obtained when ran through a software program once u get it home...such as dvdidentifier, dvdinfopro, dvddecrypter, Nero cd-dvd speed, etc.)

i'm a relative "newbie" to dvd-rebuilder myself, just started using it last week actually, but so far, it's a great combination! the results are simply stunning using an ENCODER to process, compared to the common transcoders out there today...i am very impressed PERSONALLY...i'm experimenting w/ CCE SP and Procoder 2.0 at this point, the final output is very close in comparison TO ME, i'm sure the other free/paid encoders are very good too, just haven't had a lot of time to try them all out yet! my collection of ORIGINAL dvds is HUGE, over 3,000+ now, i am an avid collector of dvds in EVERY genre, i am not restricted to just horror, action, adventure, romance, cartoons, foreign films, etc...i collect them ALL like people do with baseball cards, coins, cds, and other hobbies others may be interested in... :) i don't have a LOT of time, working most of the time, so i PERSONALLY use rebuilder on the ones i REALLY want to retain the best quality and DTS audio (if available) or if the really high compression is needed :) my other dvds, i will usually burn it up quickly using anydvd+clonedvd2 both by slysoft to save myself some time~ :) welcome to AD and enjoy your stay here, feel free to pop in my TY thread if you have ANY questions or comments at all regarding Taiyo Yuden...good day to you.

Thanks a lot for your reply. You have great patience and teach us well. ;-)

The firmware 2.42 is the latest as far as i know. Mine is 2.4

About verbatim x16, i just wanted to know from your experience if they work well on your nec nd6500, if you tried them. MY only worry is if they will be recognized. The shop that sells them is reliable. Office Depot. there are other reliable shops. The only thing is the price. But that's another story. The whole media here is expensive. TDK, verbatim, etc. Except that city disk. ;-)

As for the Taiyo Yuden samples: I sent a request yesterday, but i put the url of the web site. CS department in the university and i told them we have 2 kinds of burners. LG and NEC. So far no reply yet. I marked germany representative (as the nearer place).

I won't buy at ebay media. Too risky.
BUT if i won't be able to buy at amazon the dvds (so far meritline_zshop didn't reply), is there any kind soul here which can send us to israel? I intend to pay with my credit card for the dvds send them to usa (whoever wants) and pay the shipping to israel as well. It's so damn silly those shops don't send abroad. I even told them i have paypal. They don't work with paypal. ;-(

BTW, this meritline_zshop had another name before that.
History of Store Name
Current and Former zShops store names:

* Meritline zShop
* lianya zShop

Based on the history of the store name, You think that this is the same shop as the official meritline web site?

@q12300 - i've had an idea; as laptop drives are more expensive than standard desktop drives (and certainly far inferior) how about buying a cheap USB2.0 enclosure then buying the desktop burner of your choice and burning that way. I currently use a Benq DW1650 in one of my enclosures, works a treat. My laptop is my main PC and it's burner is just a typical flimsy laptop burner, i have no faith in it lasting very long, either due to damage (one corner of tray is already loose) and i certainly have no faith in it's burning ability for long; so when it fails i'll simply hook up one of my enclosures. Simple and a heck of a lot better than a laptop drive

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

Thanks for the tip creaky. But right now i am short of money. So far, my nec served me nicely with verbatim, except tdk which didn't burned at the speed it claimed to be. But i don't intend to buy tdk dvds. And i still have guarantee on my laptop. ;-)

But for the curiosity, can you send me a picture of how this usb enclosure should look like. It has only usb port or other ports to fit the burner as well? I may be interested later on, when this nec won't be functional.

I want to buy these nice taiyo yuden dvds, and i don't mind if it's DVD-R or DVD+R. The problem with the dvd is if they ship to israel. From amazon meritline_zshop i didn't received a reply yet. I found a nice shop in Canada, which ships to israel, but they asked shipping rate twice more than the dvds. Sad. I asked them now shipping price if i buy a larger quantity. Lets hope to the best. I envy you those guys in usa. 0.25$/dvd.

i use ty shiny silver. as you know, if you touch the surface it's susceptible to smudges. are the ty White inkjet printable dvd a matte finish or just shiny white?
i do a lot of videos for people using their pictures. since adhesive labels are a no-no and i don't have a printer that prints on disc, i'm looking for an alternative.
