I totally agree with binkie. If a f/w update doesn't help you might consider crossflashing your 1633 with 1653 f/w. This made a better drive out of my 1633 when I was using it. Another option you might try is an eeprom reset. I can give you links to both if you so desire.

I feel a bit foolish, but what is the opinion of this group about TDK materials? Are they very much worse than Taiyo?

TDK media is bad, TYs are the best, I only use TYs and Verbatims...as do many around here.

To lp and the others I promised an update on, today I recieved my ty 2's, DVD+R 200, 4, 50 pack spindles from SMS,went out and got a bunch of movies today for some heavy tryouts, with all this latest news the last couple of days you bet your pippy I was keeping my fingers crossed.
Opened all 4 spindles, grabbed one from the middle just for the hell of it, burned perfect and played on all my dvd players, tried the second pack, now mind you I never ever had a Coaster using my last order of the same 200 ty's from SMS, now after burning my second try from the second spindle using my clone and AnyDVD clone says burn complited succefully, but no matter because I always immediatly go to my dvd players to make sure, learned thru trial and error just because it says that doesnt mean it will play on a player 100% of the time, 99% it does but I have been burned before, I run to the bedroom is where I always try first and low and behold it said wont load because of a dirty disc, go to my living room, same thing, now I'm crapping myself because I wont even put in a disc with a fingerprint on it let alone dust etc. plus its a brand new disc, my very first ty Coaster, OH CRAP, now I'm paraniod, with my players I have learned that if it says dirty disc or it wont play 99% of that problem is a bad disc.
I didn't turn off clone, grabbed another ty from that same spindle and clicked on write again, now I'm watching the clock and biting my fingernails, waited till finished and again write burned sussefull, run to my bedroom again but this time it played just fine, checked all the other rooms to make sure, all ok and no noise during my burns either.
Burned another ty from that same spindle ok again, now I try the 3rd pack, burned one from the top and the middle everything aok, burned two more from the 4th spindle aok again.
Just out of curiosity from the couple of ty's I had left from my last order the numbers were differnt if that means anything or not I don't know, I will say that I'm still uncomfortable with that one Coaster, I know everybody will say hey one out of so many is no problem and I concur, just that after all the news the past couple of days I'm still a little leary, even tough I don't burn as many here do at AD I quess over the past 5 years I estimate about 800 burns and before joining AD I always bought crap media mostly memorex, but even after those years I don't think I ever got more than 20 coasters and with crap media I think that was a pretty good batting average so I really consider myself lucky and yes even my 5 year old burns my disc's still play as good as the first day knock on wood.
Anyway, I will still keep a close eye with this new batch I got and will always report even the slightest problem just in case and vise versa please, when you order 200 disc's that aint slim pickins.
And lp I was very glad to hear that SMS done right by you, and don't forget most people here at AD especially on this thread there word is bond, these guys know there stuff. I have never been steered wrong from anybody here.
And last, I would almost bet my left nut that the people from SMS deffinatly read Afterdawns threads, they aint stupid. OK thanks everybody, hope nobody including myself has no more problems, happy burning, and thanks SMS by doing the right thing for lp.

cincyrob,

I just got a pm from arniebear a little while ago. You can try sending him a pm. He might have shut things down for the evening.

LP: only once was there a lot of excessive noise, occasionally a whirring sound. Also, I have two movies I have tried to back up thathad directors commentaries. One the original you could turn them off, but on the copies they would not turn off. I tried several different ways of burning them using the options afforded by Clon? Thanks for your interest in my problems.

It was the last pack :( I got the Panasonic and the Sony T.Y.s for $6 all together, not bad I guess for 60 DVDs.

All thats left in the bin is a couple spindles of Sony DVD-Rs ( should I bother with -Rs?) and crappy Memorex stuff.

Joshewah- I would say as the previous poster's mentioned to Gather up all the Taiyo Yuden Blanks you can ( assuming they're a good deal!) of course ! No matter who's brand name is on the package ! On the memorex I would say EmpHatically NO! - The SonY DVD-R ( MIJ =Made in Japan ) Are To be preferred But the Taiwan made Sony's are The same media Code atleast in the 8X DVD-R and Are not bad for Taiwan mde media !But if you have the Option I woud go for the Sony 8X DVD+R's MIJ = Theese are Taiyo Yudens & Being DVD+R you can BookType then if your DVD burner has that ability ! Good luck & happy Bargain Hunting Joshewah! Ciao!

What a real good day for you!!!You did well in grabbing all the Taiyo medias you could find there.And at the price you got them,sure it's unbeatable and unbelievable!Man!,what a find you got here!Sure a lot of members including myself would like to get into this kind of situation,but we're all happy for you.Fortunately for you that you already knew about the reputation of Taiyo Yuden,only those who would be ignorant about that would let these babies remain in that bargain bin and that,would be a waste!

@cincyrob

Yeah!What a great news that Taiyo did really send these samples to you.And after all these informations they were looking about you,about your company and website,etc...everybody thought that it would be hard to get these samples.Sure Doc would be glad to hear about that!Can understand your impatience to burn them :o)

Have a nice day to all of you!

Vincent.

these samples look like a generic disc nothing at all on them, shiney silver face, and the dark purple back. not sure if they are printables or not. not that it matters cause i dont have a printer that prints on disc.i just did annapolis on one. used AnyDVD with clonedvd2 went through the whole process in 23 mins and thats including burning at 4x speed.

This is probably a stupid newbie question, but what are the best discs for archiving? I noticed skimming this thread it seems a lot of TY users burn at max speeds, and optimising for higher speeds seems intuitively NOT a good thing when it comes to archiving.

@singjai

I think that the best discs remain Taiyo ones.For archieving purpose,if i'm right,it's preferable to use the +R format.This format is supposed to be used for data storage,which you can consider archieving in the same section as that,and for video purpose too.

Concerning the speed you should burn them,i don't know where exactly i've came across that article where it says that it's better to reduce the burning speed when you burn anything other than movies backup.If it's true and as precaution too,you don' need to burn them at higher speed as normally we do for burning movies.If you get 8x medias,better burn them at 4x,lower than that speed will be too slow and it will almost take a lifetime for your burn to reach the end.

That's what i think and what i've read somewhere,but if other members can confirm this for me,it will be great.If i'm wrong,then my bad.

Yes normally the rule is half the disc speed. 8x disc? set it 4.
There are always exceptions, like using a good burner and Taiyo combo, I've never had a problem with discs at 8x. There are discs that are 16x and burners that even do 18x now if I'm right, but the quality of the disc goes down at around 12x it seems from others benchmarks.

The question isn't how long it takes to burn a TY - if they're archival backups that shouldn't be an issue at all since you archive only what's important enough to archive.

The issue is how long they last. How many YEARS. From what I've read the past hour or so the dye used is critical. And Mitsui Archive Gold .and best dye seem to be the most mentioned together.

Maximum real world longevity experience is still unknown as some claims of 100 years have obviously not passed. Practically, it seems likely that the discs, stored under optimal conditions, will easily endure far past the extinction of several generations of technology.

If you REALLY have to keep this data around there are much larger issues than worrying about the data on any reputable DVD, irrespective of the type (-, +-, -RW, etc).

Here's my real world example. I still have handful of "archived" original 360k 5 1/4 discs, maybe 15-20 years old, that still work. The data is fine but useless. I've not had a PC that even has one of those old drives much less still have a working copy of dBase, Quatro Pro, or Lotus 123 that would even load or run. Ditto on even the newer 1.2mb 3 1/2 discs.

That said, do get quality media such as TY, verify the burn, and store in a cool dry and dark place. Place next to that special bottle of wine as the conditions for storing a fine bottle of wine would be ideal! Oh - just don't drink the wine first and store the discs away, then wake up hung over and not remember where you put the discs . :-)
