@wintrade

It's normal man,there's no need to worry about that,that's why we all know the pioneer drives as being the worst drives in scanning.If you're using good medias and as you said they are completely readable without any problem,then you can consider it as a fine burn.Just don't let yourself misguided by scans made on pioneer drives.If you take the same disc and make a scan on a Benq drive for example,you'll be shock to see how different the results can be.

Just have a look on that link and you'll see what i'm talking about.Start to read as from Kivory's post,about his verbatim and his two drives,the Benq 1650 and the pioneer DVR-109.

windtrade ,looks like you had a bad blank disc . iam not to high on rima i would stick with suoermediastore.com or meritline.com.

also are you runnning the lastest firmware on your drive.
burn on a clean machine (doing disc cleanup and defragging)often
your scan is set at max. set it at 4x or 8x to do your scans and make sure you arent burning at max either 4x or 8x depending on your machine/burner etc.

Well I burned their Vista prog on a Verb 16x at 8x speed and it installed just fine, wish the program worked as good as the burn came out. I know MS would blame it on too fast a burn, but the bugs are in Vista and not my system. I have never burned anything at 1x, I pity my poor Plex if I subjected it to that :o

Yep, bad media lol. It's amazing how Tech support people miss the most obvious stuff. I rarely use them either. If I really have a prob, I use the online chat support, which is free for most reputable companies. I've gotten good results with that. Yeah I dunno Windtrade, I know Doc says that Pioneer drives are horrible for scanning, they just pick up way too many errors, I've read similar things elsewhere. Most peeps use Litey's or BenQ's to scan and have good results. I really don't scan my backups anymore, not unless I have playback issues. For awhile I obsessed over quality scores, but it's just a benchmark, and not always an accurate one at that. If it plays fine, don't worry about it.

@all,
Thanks for the confirmation on the media, guys. I used to buy lots of media from Rima some time ago, usually Ridata discs - they burned fine. Then I switched to SMS a couple years ago and always have great luck.

I needed some sleeves that Rima carries so about 6-8 weeks ago I also ordered one pack (100) of TYG02. That batch of TYG02 does have a few pieces of truely bad media that was unreadable. That is what triggered me to start testing again. I verified each disc after the burn using Nero and the scan disc reported all green. So I thought no problem. Then for the hell of it, I ran a disc quality test and that threw me for a real loop.

I switched back to SMS on the order this week for good and have doubts about Rima and can't recommend them for media anymore.

The new Benq 1650 arrives in a few days; I'm anxious to see what it reports out on the media. As I said, other than a few real duds, they seem to read OK.

It is just quite unsettling to see a quality score of ZERO. My trust and confidence is now totally shaken up. Since my general habit is to not play back the discs soon after burning, I feel at risk as to the quality of the burn. It's a bummer if I play the disc a few months later and find the burn is bad and the discs I burned from is no longer easily at reach. thx again

This site is a great resource I have been reading for awhile, but I could not find an answer to this:
On supermediastore.com, they have three different 8X DVD+R TYs
they have a shiny silver (DVD02X0098)
http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-...
and injet printable (DVD02X0170 and DVD02X0171) 171 being hubprintable

Aside from the silver/printable surface are these discs identical?
I ask because $40 shipped for 100 of the silvers seems a good deal. And additionally there is a premium and valueline of TYs, but is that only for DVD-R, or is the shiny silver in this case a valueline.
And lastly, if it is a valueline, is that a strong negative, or not a big issue?

Thanks for any help/info.

Much appreciated for the advice.

YUP. :)

it's been long enough, i felt the need to come back here with all these problems popping up~ :)

vherub, the "shiny silver" YUDEN000T02s (8x DVD+R) are just as good as ANY of the other YUDEN000T02 media you might find locally under the Sony/Fuji 8x DVD+R MIJ brands, those are MY favorite media at this present time, you won't go wrong w/ them...don't worry about the whole "valueline" vs "premiumline" debate, it has been proven time and time again that users have gotten "bad batches" with both of them, so it's not accurate to say that you will have better "success" with the premiumline over that of the valueline~ :)

@tokijin

hi buddy, long time...decided to end my vacation early, good to see ya around, as you guessed it, my "TY radar" has been going off so i just had to come back here and interject...

@all

M$ Vista (at this point at least) is NOT worth it, i tried a few of the various "revisions" in beta form and quite frankly, burning @1x on ANY media is ridiculous and totally not the "root of M$'s problems" concerning "bugs/issues" people have w/ Vista ISO, another poor excuse for a problem riddled OS that points the finger at the consumers rather than admitting their own shortcomings...i for one will NOT upgrade to Vista when it comes out early next year (final release), just not worth it to me, but as with all software/OS, everyone will have their own decisions to make whether they want to "upgrade" or not...i use the term "upgrade" very loosely as in my eyes, it really isn't much of one... :)

@windtrade

as TY4ever mentioned and linked you to my posts regarding Pioneer drives, while you may indeed have a few bad discs in your current batch of media from Rima.com, don't EVER trust the scans done by a pioneer, i can show u PLENTY of "zero" scores done by MY pioneer that are 97,99 quality score respectively on my Benq :) as the others have mentioned, go by PLAYBACK before addressing possible "issues" with the disc and upon doing so, no need to have a Pioneer scan throw ya in a loop because of your very low scores...have faith in your burners and good quality TYs when burning, we all get a "bad one" here and there, but for the most part with decent burners and good quality media, there really is no reason to become alarmed, it happens to ALL of us at some point or another :)

Good to see ya Doc, I've heard similar things about the VISTA beta, sounds like a crappy OS, at least til they get the bugs worked out. Dare I say XP SP2 has been pretty good to me for the most part. It helps to have good knowledge of malware and scripts. What's your take on the Yuden000T03's? I've heard other people's opinions, but I'm always interested in your opinion regrading media.

What's your take on the Yuden000T03's?
i think they're pretty good thus far, i've only used about 100 up till now, so my experience with them in not nearly as extensive as the other TY medias :) with Benq burners and firmware, dare i say they are probably THE BEST 16x rated DVD+R media at this point in time, just slightly better than the Verbatim MCC004s :)

if i could get a better price on them, i would have a lot more of the YUDEN000T03s, however, even my "hookups" thru TY leaves a lot to be desired as to my pricing... :(

in my HONEST opinion, generally speaking, i would have to say that FOR ME, the 8x rated medias (YUDEN000T02 + MCC003) are more "solid" and i have more confidence in them for my burning purposes, they are becoming harder and harder to find these days for a good price, but if i were to recommend 8x DVD+R media to anyone in this day and age, def. stick w/ the Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim medias, i actually just recently bought some more 8x DVD+R Verbatim MIT MCC003 coded when on sale, so my stock of Verbs has been replenished too~ :)

firmware is vitally important for the 16x rated medias, your success will depend largely on which firmware you are using if they are optimized for the 16x rated discs by whichever manufacturer...also, since i know u are using a cross-flashed Benq 1640, it would be a good idea to enable Solidburn in QSuite and consider their newest firmware at this point, BSRB, found here:

http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DVDRW/DW1640/BSRB.zip

i updated MY own Benq 1640 to BSRB about 2 weeks ago and so far so good, others have had "mixed experiences" regarding this firmware (which is weird since so many people report issues with new firmware that i can never seem to reproduce), so, as they say, "your mileage may vary" as setups are diff. on all systems~ :) no 2 systems are exactly alike even if they have identical components~ :)

even if they get all the "bugs" worked out in Vista, i am still very hesitant in using their OFFICIAL release, if their "beta" versions are ANY indication of POSSIBLE issues in the final release, i too will be happy to stick w/ my Winxp Pro w/ SP2 i have now~ :P good day to you buddy.

Thanks for all the info Doc, much appreciated. I'm a little concerned as to the shortage of 8x media as well, I wonder how much longer 8x TY's and Verb's will be available online. 8x Verb's are already pretty scarce. I'd hate to see Yuden000T02 discontinued altogether, still my all time favorite media. I'm behind on my firmware, so thanks for the heads up. The cool thing about cross flashing is that even after deleting the C partition and a fresh install of XP, it remains a BenQ drive. No wonder they tell you to be careful with that lol, it's permanent. Anyway later Doc, and welcome back.

they most certainly are under the Sony brand 8x & 16x DVD-R, but MUST BE MADE IN JAPAN~ (MIJ) :)

there might be a slight cause of concern because Sony is infamous for having the SAME MID coding on both their MIT & MIJ spindles of media in the past, so, for SONY...look for a WHITE octagonal spacer at the top of the pack while also adhering to the "made in japan" on the label, this will be your BEST bet to get the Taiyo Yudens locally~ :)

@tokijin

yeah, the firmware and QSuite settings will REMAIN even if you decide to "swap your drive" out to a totally NEW system, even under a different OS, mobo, chipset, hardrives, etc...the firmware that is "flashed" to your drive currently will remain the same and all that memory is retained~ :) it's a good thing about that lil feature, makes it quite easy to just slap that baby into a new system and be up and running very quickly~ :) may you have continued success w/ ur burner...

i don't think the YUDEN000T02s will ever be discontinued (well not anytime soon at least)...they are a great product and for the others that have had great success with them as you and i have both experienced, it would be a darn shame if they stopped production...to me, if that were to be the case, i think i would honestly be on the Verbatim Mitsubishi Chemicals bandwagon and use the MCC coded discs if ever the YUDEN000T02s were to disappear...or i juss might go back to Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media if TY stopped making DVD+R LOL~ it won't ever happen, TY has a good product and they KNOW it, sometimes it gets to their head so quality control might be questionable in SOME batches, but overall, TY has my confidence in quality~ :)

hehe, glad you like them~ :) i ironically haven't heard back from TY when i go thru their website to request samples~ LOL...funny huh?

anyways, yeah, i gotta give it up to the 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s, very very good quality media and MY #1 choice at this present time...

good luck w/ ur Sony local shopping hunt! i think finding the white/octagonal spacers is the KEY to finding the Taiyo Yudens, i know for a fact that Sony brand has the TYG02 + TYG03 in the 8x DVD-R and 16x DVD-R respectively, i just want to let you know ahead of time that if you happen to get a MIJ spindle and when run thru a dvd identifier program and it comes back as SONY, it IS NOT TAIYO YUDEN, another way u can check for the "real deal" (once u get home) is look for the "inner hub coding" that i so often refer to...for them to be TYs, they WILL 100% have to have a GG000xxx or GH000xxx for the 8x DVD-R and 16x DVD-R respectively~ so you can actually TELL immediately (once u have them in ur hands) before running them thru ur computer, if you have genuine TYs or not~ :) it's juss too bad that the "spacer" in the cakebox/spindle covers up the area where the "inner hub coding" is located, or else people could EASILY distinguish IMMEDIATELY in the store whether they are TYs or not (assuming you have the knowledge of finding them to begin with) :)

I've never gone wrong with the octogonal spacer, every circular one has been Sony, every octogonal one has been TY. I always check the label if I'm going to purchase them, but for browsing purposes, I've never seen a circular spacer that's been MIJ or an octogonal spacer that's MIT.
