well,
as far as I know, the easiest way to play backups is to install a mod chip in the new slimline. It does require more wires, but on the bright side, there are no bios chip pins that you need to solder to, just metal contact pads. however, there will be a few pins that you do need to solder to. (most will be contact pads though). I fond the easiest way to do the soldering is to use the 30GA wire and soldering paste which can be picked up a any kind of store. I also used a solderstation that has a magnifing glass. Just dip the wire in the tube of paste to coat it and touch the wire with the soldering iron (15W is good enough) and blam. done, and no messes. I mod ps2's and X-boxes and this is the easiest way. soldering past is also a lot stronger then regular solder.

As far as the flip top goes, if you use any kind of swap disc, then you should really get the flip top, it make everything a heck of a lot easier and make it easy to swap the disc at the right time.

martinj: that is not true. even with the new "slimline" PSTwo, you still need a mod chip or a new flip top cover, along with the Swap Magic Disc 3.3 (need version 3.3 to be compatible with new PSTwo).

i just recently found a new method opposed to the flip top cover for the new "slimline" PSTwo. its called "Ghost Switch". here is more information on it: http://www.customps2.com/site/pages/prods/pstwo_gc.html . i was wondering if anyone has experience with it at all or knows anything about it. thanks.

hey all,
I am going to try and answer as many questions as i can from this monster thread, so if you have actually read the whole thread and still didnt find your answer let me know and ill see if i can answer you>>

DVD MEDIA - most ps2 "backup" methods support both -R and +R, but -R is typically going to give your laser a longer life so i suggest -R

Mod chip installs (solder) - basically all the modern chips work pretty well and offer the same basic features. Try to get one that can be turned off (for some online games) low wire count (for install its easier). Dont get old chips (especially magic, they had high voltage that burned out laser) suggested brands are DUO 3, DMS, NEO2, and SMART, I am aware of others but am not as knowledgeable.

Swap disk - Swap magic is the way to go for a swap method. The only issue I see with with this method is that the flip top still voids warranty and costs almost as much as the 65-70 dollars that a good mod chip install by someone costs. The slide card method is good because it doesnt void warrant and is easy to do without having to have anything installed. Only trouble is that it takes longer to swap and you have to be careful not to break the pin or cog that controlls the tray. If you do then the ps2 is useless

Installing a mod chip - I can direct you to guides elseware if you really want to do your own install to save a measly 40 dollars, but i HIGHLY SUGGEST you get someone who has considerable experience soldering (and has done a ps2 mod before) because you need to have the right gauge wire (heavier for the ground and power) and the bios pins are a bitch to solder, even with a millimeter tip and a magnifying glass. Hardest soldering i have ever done and the time was worth far more than the money it costs to install. Check out fastmodz.com modchips.com and other modding sites, prices are reasonable.

BURNING PS2 backups - I suggest DVD Decrypter because it is very easy to use and offers a lot of the basic features (plus its free!!). The guide for DVD Decrypter is in the forum (READ!!!) so i am not ging to explain. you can google a sentence from the guide to get the whole one with pictures. It also might be up on PS2ownz.com - A site i highly reccamend. For those of you who load the "please insert a ps2 formated disk" red screen, that is probably due to the fact that the game needs to be patched. check out "Bjohnson's spoonfed guide for making ps2 backups" (google). also look for PPF-O-MATIC for patching games.

I hope i covered everything, let me know if there is anything else.

The Guy Game. I use DVD Decrypter and it has backed up my other games perfectly. TGG is obviously a dual layer disk (iso is 7.5 or 7.75gig). looking for some help to split it up on 2 dvd-r disks. By the way, I have a dual layer burner and dual layer dvd+r that I burnt it to in the beginning. ps2 won't play it. Now I'm stuck. What to do...

Thx to everyone for the helpful posts, I am very familar with burning ps2 games, the cd ones very much, not as much the dvd games, the way i burn the games is using cdrwin. i first get it into my hdd as a bin file, then i patch it and burn it with fireburner. now that i've gotten a dvd burner i can no longer do this as cdrwin does not support my burner at the time. i clearly understand all the steps with DVD Decrypter, but to my understanding i have to patch the games to make the playable with the magic swap cd's. i've heard about the ppf-o-matic but i have no idea how to use i would appreciate any type if help thx.

Hey everyone....

Just to let you guys know, I use MEMOREX DVD+R. I have tried both 4x and 8x speed on these discs and they work with everything.

Memorex also don't cost much money to buy. You can usually find a 50 pack for less then $50 CDN

Memorex has never failed me

athougt,

Actually it is true in 1998 Sony anounced an encryption software that would make it difficult to burn games. Therefore there is a way to crack the language after it is copied to your hard drive. It won't be easy though.

Hi,
I am new to this site, but have read the forum for quite awhile. This is to hiredgoon. I have decrypter and a new NEC 16x Burner. I have done the Iso/Read-Iso/Write and have trouble. I put the backup in the PS2 and it says to put in a PS2 disc or a Ps2 format disc. Which is telling me it is not reading this disc. Is there a step I am missing or something else I need to get? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hmm...we'll I'm new to the mod chip/swap disk stuff. I've been reading differnet methods...mod chip, swap disk, slide card....which one is recommended? I really don't want to whip out my soldering gun though.

i suggest you get a mod chip install from fastmodz.com
or some other site, its pretty cheap (I think about 70 dollars plus shipping to modder). Or you can get swap magic with slide card method because that is one of the cheapest ways if your tight on cash. But getting the install isnt that much more expensive.

TO THE PEOPLE HAVING TROUBLE BOOTING BACKUPS THAT HAVE MOD CHIPS: you need burn on good media at slow speeds and you also probably need to patch the game as i said before. Read Bjohnson's guide to making ps2 backups (google).

also the link from ps2ownz is about ripping DL games so you can burn them to a single layer dvd. You end up losing a lot video sound and other stuff making games pretty bland. Let me get back to you on a good thread for burning dl backups. Before you worry about any of this though you need to have a burner that does dual layer burns. if you dont i suggest downloading a rip from mIRC or bittorrent or some other P2P. It is a lot easier than making your own rips.
