@greensman

it's just a personal preference...some members such as cincyrob and blivetNC have had great success with TYG03s, my own experience with them has been "less than stellar"...that doesn't make them bad discs, i just PERSONALLY get better results using TYG02/TYG01 (8x/4x rated DVD-R respectively), but that's just me~ :)

also, i got/have used the earliest batches of TYG03, a few hundred of them actually, so that might also account for the fact i don't "prefer" them myself...the earlier batches are usually "not as good" as the more recent, improved, further refined batches~ :) also at the time i used them, firmware for my various drives were more than likely using a generic write strategy as the TYG03 MID coding wasn't implemented properly in the firmware versions that i was using...so, it all depends on your particular setup, everyone's "mileage will vary" on their success with them~

good day to you~

@cincyrob

im glad you are having good success with them, keep it up buddy. burn on...

@cincyrob,

Ok I went ahead and bought some of the MIJ Sony 16X DVD-R's. I can't help myself, I'm just like a kid in a candy store with these Sony TY's. I will try them out and let you know how they work. BTW, what are you using for "encoding/transcoding" and writing your movies? 22 minutes is screaming on any computer. lol. Coming from the guy with a 5 year old Dell. LOL.

we watched 2 of the 5 backups i have done on those sony 16xdvd-r's(mij)and i think they might be the best i have done so far.seeing i havent done anything differently other than media change.i had to redo the ringer lastnight cause i let my sister borrow it and some how she said there wasa big crack in it and wouldnt work..so i did it on one of the -R's and burnt it at 12x only took 12:12its a small movie so there wasnt much to it other thanburning it to disc..

the -R's untill i decide to get a better player is all i will use now....

Hi,

I've got a question thats a bit offtopic but didn't want to start a new thread for it.
I recently ordered a new dvd-burner online since my old one ( a NEC 1300a ) was really getting old and not letting me burn at a higher speed then 2x.

I've bought a Sony DWQ120AB2 because I will mostly use it to burn ps2 games and I thought it would be better to use sony.
Now I have been reading this forum and noticed that I can't do the Nero CD/DVD speed test with my old NEC drive because it's not compatible or something.
Will this new Sony drive be able to use this test and was it a good buy (if not what would you guys recommend?).

Sony is a good overall drive so you should be fine with your purchase . other good drives are Plextor,BenQ,Lite-On and LG.

the quality tool in Nero should work with that Sony being Lite-On makes alot of Sony drives. my Lite-ON works with the quality tool. just try a DVD if it wont work the quality tab will be shaded out. good luck

thanx for your advice aabbccdd,

But I changed my mind after reading alot about benq being the best choice cause it is more compatible with dvd-players so I guess it's better to use with my ps2 too.

I changed the order I placed into a BenQ DW-1650 Retail. And the price is the same as the Sony.

@busabuzz

You did well with the DW1650. Got one in March. Be sure to get the Q Suite software from BenQ site and install it. Nary a coaster yet. It loves 8X +R SonyMIJ labeled TYs T02s. Burns one of those beauties at 8 X (4400 KB) in about 8 or 9 mins.

Agreed. BenQ drives are wonderous. I love mine, get great results burning at 4x and 8x. They're cheap, feature packed, and reliable. 95% of my backups are PS2 or Xbox games, and I happily burn at 8x with almost no dropoff in quality from 4x. I'll post some 8x scans I ran last night in a bit.

Hello Doc . . glad to see the BenQ appreciation society is still in full swing at AD . . .

I've increased my collection of BenQ drives . . let's see I have:

2 DW1640
3 DW1650 (1 flashed from a DW1655)
1 DW1655 (just for labels)
2 DW1670 (the best burns come from these!)

I've also put new drives in all 3 of my LiteOn set top recorders . . if you install the drives in your PC first, you can set the darn things up to booktype!

hi catfreak,

great to see ya popping in now and then, i'm more than chock full of Benq drives at this point, only currently using 3 of them in my various setups, and have like 5-6 more on "reserve" :)

i am unfamiliar with the the whole set top recorder aspect of burning, so i can't say anything at all about those...but, it's good to hear that you are having such good success with them~ :)

i won't be making any burner/optical drive purchases for awhile, as i still have "older" drives by pioneer/nec/liteon/& whoever else i can't think of at this point to use before i go out purchasing the "newest" or "fastest" or "greatest" burner at this point in time~

i'll leave the newest Benq's to YOU :)

have a good one my friend, i've been making myself more "scarce" on here as of late too, i've obviously seen what AD has become in the past few months and my motivation to help out or correct misinformation has dropped to an all time low~ :) what can ya do right? hope all is well with you and yours...

Dang doc if you're not buying any new burners I guess no leftovers for me :0)

I'll try and post a scan here in the coming days.

I think you should still stick around but I can understand where you're coming from.

On the subject of TY's (cd's) - unable to find the made in Japan Fuji's so I picked up a pack of made in Japan Maxell (CD Pro) - low and behold they are manufactured by Taiyo Yuden.

hi binkie~ :)

i will always have a burner for ya if need be, no worries there~ :)
i got plenty of brand new in box (bubble wrap depending on how you look at it) OEM versions that i have yet to put a single burn on yet, but with burners becoming so inexpensive nowadays, there might be some room for me to try a "new" one if it really is as good as others make it out to be~ :) but it would have to be DIRT CHEAP for me to pick it up though LOL

as to TY cd-rs, while i have some, i don't use cds anymore for burning...i do have a few CD-rs left when time comes to use them, but they are Verbatim brand and most definitely NOT taiyo yuden manufactured~ :) i'm not very experienced on cds and i don't think i ever will be, guess i'm just not a real big "music fan" or whatnot, just a personal preference, that's all~ :)

i'll be around every now and then, but not as frequently as i once was...don't worry, my part of your project is still being worked on, i have not forgotten about it, i want to make it good the first time around~ (actually, the 2nd time around due to my untimely misfortune w/ my laptop) :)

You know Doc . . CD-R discs aren't just for music anymore . . I use 'em for slide shows, SVCD, VCD and for my old radio broadcast collection . . here's a funny Vietnam broadcast that brings back memories . .

hehe, catfreak, i know cd-rs are not just for music anymore~ :) i just used a very poor choice of wording in my above post~ and i guess it wasn't fair of me to kinda "categorize" cds as being for music, but i did mention "or whatnot" earlier after i stated the music comment~ LOL

anyways, i have a lot of foreign VCDs on cds, naturally the quality of them don't hold a candle to the dvds i own, but they are really hard to find these days, cd-rs will always serve their purpose for the individual user, for whatever their needs may be~ :)

have a good one...that's a good clip, thanks for that~

lol docTy - no worries :)

Now those Verbatim cd's - you might have the CMC made ones. (yes they still are bad - cd or dvd - just my experience)

As catfreak said they can be used for more than music! You know the great quality downloads :o)

Hey I was looking around videohelp.com of late, and I had question. A lot of people have been looking for the OEM of their drive, and that site is really helpful. It got me wondering, is the Sony DRU-820 a BenQ DW 1670 rebadge? I know that it's a BenQ rebadge, just not sure what model it's based off of.

I'll post some 8x scans in a bit, been mired down with different things.

@Doc

I hope you won't make yourself too scarce. I've been through a fair amount of personal BS of late, some of it my own doing. I can understand needing to take a break, but I hope you don't walk away completely. Don't let the rampant flame wars, misinformation, and disrespect drive you way.

@ Tokijin,
I found this on another thread but I can't remember which one so I just copied it from my favorites. It is a firmware page that identifies your drive OEM or not, with a little input from the user. lol. Give it a try and see if this answers your question.

Tokijin,

I'm guessing that the sony 820 is a rebadged benq 1670 since it is an oem benq drive and uses the same chipset as the 1670.
