I can't say personally I've noticed a ton of difference. I probably get slightly better scores with DVD+R's, fewer max PIF's. I've grown to prefer DVD+R's for backups. No real reason, just basically I've read the articles about why they're better, and made the switch. The technical reasons why they're better are basically lost on me. Something to do with the manufacturing process, etc.

I think most of the +R benefits rely on the booktyping fact.
Less embarassment watching a movie at a friends house whose player wont support -R.
The exact same movie within ±5% quality difference on a + or a - disc, but 1 is more reliable.
I know my pick. I keep both on hand depending on the destination...

Yeah I use DVD-R's for movies, or data. My DVD player will play anything, like you, I just prefer the booktyping aspect, DVD-ROM is more compatible on newer players than DVD-R. Unfortunately, I never burn movies, so I've got 200 TYG02/03's just sitting there lol. I'll have to use the 02's for games when I run out of DVD+R's (70 or so left).

BTW Tokijin your sig is WAY to big the pic can be only 100 pixels tall with three lines of text. yours is 150 tall with seven lines of text so your WAY over buddy.

Appreciate it aabbccdd, but I'll let the mods handle their duty. Besides which,
Quote: 12. An image-only signature should be less than 50kb in size, and be at most 500 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall.
It's within site guidelines anyway.

4. If you want to use both text and image in your signature the image should not be more than 500 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall, and you can use up to three lines of text.

iam not trying to be a smartass or mod . i got busted for it a few weeks ago so i was passing on the info to save ya the trouble. the sig issue is way out of hand in here and needs to be addressed , just not you

and read this to keep it within the fourm rules
Signatures
These rules exist to make viewing the forum as pleasant as possible to all users. Even though you might think signatures with large pictures look cool, some might find them extremely annoying.
1. Text-only signatures should have at most 5 lines of text.
2. An image-only signature should be less than 50kb in size, and be at most 500 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall.
3. If you use an animated picture in the signature, it should not be too distractive. Eg. blinking images or images with quick movement are not allowed.
4. If you want to use both text and image in your signature the image should not be more than 500 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall, and you can use up to three lines of text.
5. All the abovementioned rules for forum posts apply also to the signatures.

I realize you're trying to be helpful aabbccdd. I'm going to ask you once more politely to drop the issue. If a mod asks me to resize it, I will do so. Til then, it's none of your concern.

look man i told you i wasnt trying to be a smartass ,your sig isnt even close to being within the rules and i was just trying to pass on the info to you as a aDa you shouldnt have to be told by the mods what your sig should be or me ,we all have to follow the rules not just a few of us. so belive me they will contact you over it because i reported it which i know will piss you off but at least i admit it. so i just though you might want to fix it without them holding your hand. but i see your not interested so its cool. peace
btw getting back on topic did anyone else get the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 300 pack for 71.99 this week i havent got mine yet so i dont know if there TYGO2s or TYGO3s we will see ,hopefully there the TYGO2s

Back to the -R/+R "debate." I've used over 1,000 TY -R's with 99% compatibility. I've used a couple hundred TY +R's with 100% compatibility (Unless I forgot to booktype them. One of my players won't play +R, it has to be -ROM. My LG burner has to be reset to booktype everytime the system is restarted. I need to get Alexnoe's patch for it over at CDFreaks!!!) I just recently joined the BenQ club!
I just got the Plextor 740UF (external) and flashed it to a BenQ EW 164B (external version of the 1640). I know the 1650 is gaining ground, but the 1640 is legendary and is still receiving great firmware support! Besides, $56.00 for a brand new BenQ external drive is a GREAT deal. You can't even make your own external for that price!!! It joins my Pioneer 109, LG 5163D, and LiteOn 1693SX.
Anyway, back to the topic:
With the difference in price between TY -R and +R inkjet printable media coupled with the marginal difference in compatibility and quality scores, my TY +R purchases will be few and far between. I have a spindle of 100 TY +R on standby anyway. It must be lonely surrounded by the 3 100 spindles of TY -R. LOL

Let's let the MODs handle this sig stuff, Huh. Let's not taint Doc's thread with this kind of sh#t. One of the rules here, also, is the MODs do the moderating.

It is clear that both (TY) DVD-R and DVD+R discs are of excellent quality and will nearly always play back if properly burned.
What I am after is more esoteric as it relates to all the CD-Speed disc quality scan that have been run and reported. All these scans show solid burns but does one format inherently and consistently report lower "better" scan numbers?

teflonmyk , yeah for whatever reason the DVD+R wont play on alot of older dvd players even when you booktype them to DVD-ROM (thats why i use the dsah format).i buy ALL my blank media online and the price difference between the DVD dash R and the DVD plus R is just to much to justify buying the DVD plus R

aabbccdd,
I'm not trying to argue with you ole buddy, but there are very few stand-alone dvd players (even older ones) that will not play DVD+R media booktyped dvd-rom thus the reasoning for bitsetting in the first place. Granted there are some but there are also some that won't play dvd-r's either. The DVD-R format is much more compatable on older stand-alone dvd players than dvd+r's that are not booktyped dvd-rom.
windtrade,
I think you will find that your PIE/PIF errors will be lower on DVD+R media when burning with your benq as they tend to perform better with +r media

Mort , i guess i should reword that a FEW older dvd players not alot lol. the price difference online between the DVD dash R and the DVD plus R Taiyo Yuden is BIG. the 200 pack of DVD+R TY is 78.00 (39 cents each)compared to the DVD-R being 72.00 for 300(24 cents each) this week quite a gap. not the case buying in a B&M store though if you can find TY media there

Mort, windtrade---Especially when Q-suite learns the media.
I'll reference a page or 2 ago to show the pic of the scan.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/296925/2246026 My first burn was an 87% (so-so, no visual difference watching the disc), the 2nd burn was a 98% Same movie file copied to disc, same brand blank, but the jump is huge.

Yeah the dvd-r's can almost always be had a little cheaper online than the +r's. Usually not that much of a spread though. I use mostly hub printable media but my last 100 pk of verbatim DVD+R non printables cost me 23 cents a disc w/ free shipping and they have all played flawless.

@Deadrum33,
>>My first burn was an 87% (so-so, no visual difference watching the disc), the 2nd burn was a 98% Same movie file copied to disc, same brand blank, but the jump is huge. <<
I did not experience anything close to what you saw. The changes were very small from disc to disc. That is why I started wondering if the drive was really "learning" anything.
Can you check the SolidBurn tab in Qsuite and tell me what the number of "learned discs" is and how many MIDs are listed?
Mine shows 1 with TYG02 as the only listed media. I wonder if the number is only a count of the different media MIDs that have been stuck in the drive.
thx

aabbccdd,
I got those verbs from newegg and yeah there was a mail in rebate. Knock on wood, I'm yet to get burned on any mail in rebates and verbatims rebates are one of the fastest to get the rebate out to you. The mail in rebates don't bother me like they do some ppl.
