Yes, you may run it.
Nobody knows if it will unbrick your Wii, because we do not know which game bricked it in the first place.
However, SMG(US) has the highest firmware so far, so there is a very good chance you'll fix your Wii.

Just to let you know, when Mario Galaxy updated my Wii i never put the 1.9g update on. Will i be able to put this on now or will the wii still not be able to read the disc? if not is Mario Galaxy the only way around this problem? Thanks so much for you help rafadawn.
Originally posted by rafadawn: This is known as semi-brick. You must have played a game with some sort of update from a region different than your Wii.
If your console is PAL, you will need a PAL SMG original and see if that works.
There is a whole Sticky on Wii brick problems.
Originally posted by KromaZone: My wii does not recognize any backups or my config disc 1.3 it will play originals but nothing else, i also cannot access the wii settings anymore as it says something about opera?? please help. Its a pal version. dunno if theres anything else you need to know but need help with this.

Just to share with everyone with a semi-bricked Wii jap (NTSC/J) set :-
I have managed to un-bricked my set with a Wii Fit (NTSC/J) game. I can now access the settings menu without the opera browser error anymore.
Important note : This does not apply if your set is NTSC/U or PAL.

Hello to all you Mod experts out there I really need your help!!
I had my PAL Wii firmware 2.2E moded with a wiikey (Firmware unknown) for Christmas best present ever!!! Played my back up (burned on Datawrite Titanium DVD-R) and original Wii games with no problem until?I updated my Wii to firmware 3.1e I was told this wouldn?t case a problem.
To my horror none of my backups work only the originals, through reading these threads I?ve learned that because of the 3.1e update GCOS or Hex'd config discs may be required to get the Wiikey up and running again I've even tried burning these on DVD-R x3 from this forum for 1.2 and 1.3 I don?t even get the GC logo for the GCOS versions on the disc channel as for the Hex?d versions - Just the usual - Unable to read disc please refer to manual....
My chip and setup must be good cos I could play backups originally real wiikey or clone!!! I've even followed the technique for clone wiikeys - nothing!!!
I haven?t tried the 1.9b recovery disc what version do I need to run??? A Hex'd or GCOS version padded to 1.4g? Not sure if or how I can do this, will this recover the Wiikey on my Wii running Firmware 3.1E?
Please can anybody help!!! Thank you in advance

Hi Rafadawn,
I have tried 1.9g update (padded jap) success.
but I still not able to play my backup copies. :(
Originally posted by rafadawn: 1) Yes, it means that GCOS works.
2) The Recover 1.9b is supposed to run 3 to 5 minutes, even though nothing appears on the screen.
3) Try burning the 1.9g update (use the padded Jap file from first post) Burn it on a good quality DVD-R at 2x. When it says to press the A button, you can use the RESET button on your Wii.

hi all,
after days of pulling my hair out trying to sort my problem with a wiikey clone i stumbled across this forum and thread.
i would just like to thank rafadawn for all the info he has compiled in this thread and also _666_ who kept the thread updated with the progress of his problem and solution - which was exactly the same as my experience.
thanks again

First of all:
Did the update run TWICE? First time as a TEST and then for real? (This is very very important!)
Now you need to turn REGION OVERRIDE On and for that you will need to run the HACKED 1.3 Config disc from the initial post.
I think you WILL need a GC controller to do that. Once you do that, then you should be able to run the backups.

@dazzy33:
Take your time ... this should be easy.
1) You will need to use a GCOS version of the Config 1.3, or Config 1.2, or the HACKED 1.3.
2) In order to make a GCOS you will need WiiUI (link in first post), set on your REGION and with 1 GAME selected.
3) VERY IMPORTANT!! any image you will make a GCOS of will have to be 1.35GB. If the image is not 1.35GB, then filechop it.
INSTRUCTION FOR HACKED 1.3 FILE:
If you download the HACKD 1.3 and extract the files, you will have a folder named Config 1.3, with three bat files. Unfortunately each bat file will make a 4.37GB image, whereas we need a 1.35GB one to make a GCOS out of it using WiiUI.
Here is what you do:
Select the bat for your region. Right-click on it and select EDIT. The file should open in Notepad. Change the number 4699979776 to 1459978240.
Now, save and close the bat file, then double click on it to run it. It will run for few seconds and it will create an image 1.35GB in size. Make a GCOS of it using WiiUI and burn it at 2x or 4x on a good DVD-R disc. Run it (you will need a GC controller) and use it to turn REGION OVERRIDE ON. You should be all set after it.
@KromaZone:
Yesy, you can run the 1.9g update after SMG.

Hey there,
Previously, thanks to this thread and rafadawn, I was able to get SMG working with my USA Wii. Over the last few weeks the game has worked fine but occassionally, just at startup I'll get an error message (sorry I didn't think of it as a concern as I just either had to eject and again insert the disc or unplug the Wii and insert the disc again and off I went to play SMG). I thought it may just be a subpar burn.
But, this evening I got an "Unauthorized Device Detected Detected" message. I could just power off so I unplugged the Wii and reinserted the disk, and again, I'm able to play. However, since this message talked about an unauthorized device I was a little more concerned and figured I'd ask if anyone else is gettinng this message ONLY occassionally, and like me, it doesn't seem to be stopping the game play, it's just an inconvenience at this point.

When I was playing a backup of SMG, my wii froze and it was making this ringing sound. I had to unplug it to work. Please tell me what the cause of this was and if it could be harmful to the wii?
THANK YOU

Hi rafadawn,
I have ran it twice (test and real). until it said "u all nuts".
after that I can used all 3 version of config including config 1.2, config 1.3, hacked config 1.3 without using GC controller and save it after turn region on. apparently I can play US game with my Wii Jap version.
The problem only those backup copies I burned, no longer able to play. All of them are working before I upgraded to 1.9g.
Is this due to the 3.1J wii firmware or 1.9g/1.9b wiikey firmware.
Is wiiket.cn no longer support wiikey?

sorry for asking again, when you run config 1.2 or 1.3 the second time after turning on the REGION OVERRIDE in the first time, did the screen show REGION OVERRIDE is OFF again or remaining ON ?
Mine is OFF.

@wiigame and @lawtyger:
As I have said before, it appears that the Wii has a delicate laser, prone to loose strength and precision. Therefore I strongly reccommend using the best DVD media you can afford, burning at low speeds, and ABSOLUTELY NOT using discs that cause DRE or, even worse, screeching sounds possibly caused by unbalanced discs. Just re-burn those discs.
@aharjono:
Yes, it appears to be OFF even when it's really ON.
badbad:
The fact that you can run the Update and Config discs without problems it says that your Wiikey is working fine, therefore I would try re-burning those games on DVD-R at 2x or 4x and see what happens.
vietboyyy:
Burn it again on DVD-R at 2x or 4x, use good quality media.

Thanks for relpying I treid the 4.37GB image from the hacked ISO last night still - Unable to read disc. So your sayng this hack ISO needs to recognised as a GCOS disc? and to do this I nees the WiiUI software? Is this because of the Wii 3.1E firmware and to get round the Unable to read disc I have to follow the GCOS instructions? - the only problem is I dont have a GC controller! Anything else I can do? I also checked the souldering last night the guy who fitted it did a A+ job no shorts or anything.
Thanks in advance.

When I ran the hexed 1.3 config disc, there was a GC screen followed by a press A to continue screen (in Jap, I dun really know what it says).
When I pressed "reset" button on my Wii console, nothing happens or rather the screen remains unchanged at all.
Do I have to wait 3-5 minutes? What does the screen shows while it is running in the background? Do I just press and release the reset button or do I need to hold it (for how long)?
So far, I have yet to run any of the 1.9 update disc and the 1.3 config disc (GCOS, hexed, padded or what have you) successfully.

I was searching on the web for a tutorial on how to mod the Wii with Wiikey and stumbled across this awesome site. After futzing around with my Wii for a night, I finally got everything to work (with a lot of hard learned lessons). So I want to just give a comprehensive text tutorial on how to do everything from start to finish (adding to the 102938102983 awesome tutorials out there already). Anyways, here it is (mods, please remove anything that shouldn't be in my post):
Disclaimer: This is just my experiences and warnings, and it shouldn't be taken as any sort of professional advice. You're doing any and/or all of this at your own risk and you agree to not hold me accountable for any problems or injuries that may arise.
Objective: Mod the US NTSC (NTSC-U) Wii with firmware 3.0 to play original NTSC-J Wiifit (Wii Fit), using the Wiikey.
Steps:
1. Get a Wiikey with the triwing screw driver. I got mine from www.modchipcentral.com. Since I ordered over the Christmas break, it took 1.5 weeks to clear the order and get to my house. But overall, I was quite happy with everything.
2. Get a tinnnnny phillips screwdriver...the ones you see in those blue and transparent cases.
3. Get some soldering equipment:
* 30 gauge wires (I got something like 24 gauge, and that was wayyyy too large...ended up using a nail clipper to clip one end down...but more about that later).
* A soldering iron with a VERY thin tip. I got a Hakko N452 from Fry's with a thin needle tip (I think this is the one)...and even this thinnest needle tip I could get from Fry's was too large =( .
* Some <= 0.025" Rosin Core solder (I didn't like the lead either, but the silver ones were all too thick...although now I don't think it matters).
* Magnifying glass + stand, if you can afford it (I couldn't).
* Solder stand with sponge.
* Some paper towel.
* MAYBE some flux, but I don't know how to use it.
* A steady hand (I had) and a brain (seriously, since I didn't quite have one). Otherwise, get a friend who's good at soldering to do it (and one that you know is "detail oriented").
* TEH GOGGLEZ! ZHEY DO SOMEZING! (i.e. goggles)
4. Learn the basics of soldering (search teh googlez for "soldering tutorial" or something).
5. Open up the Wii. Watch teh youtubes for instructions (search "Wii Disassembly" in youtube...that should be good enough).
6. Open all windows in your house/apt/etc... for ventilation. You don't want to be breathing in the fumes. And on that note, don't ever work ABOVE where you're soldering. Always work at an angle so the fumes don't go directly into your face. Try to be on the upwind as well (if you have a fan or are outside).
7. If you're unsure how to do it, watch some video online on how to solder the Wiikey (search for "Wiikey installation video" or something...most have been taken offline from youtube, so you may have to watch it from some rapidshare links or something, or make do with the still images).
8. Solder it. Now this is the fun experience I had.
I first got a co-worker to do it. He basically did the wire-less method and just tried to use the leads that drive through the Wiikey's PCB. Since we didn't know any better, we ended up leaving the sixth lead alone, as well as big bubbles of solder in one of the two quick soldering holes. So yeah, I took this home and tried it out. Guess what? No workie.
So I went about hooking up the last lead with my 24 gauge wire. And what happened next was most tragic. Somehow, I managed to get the wire correctly soldered to the surface pad when I thought I didn't. So I tried repositioning the wire. Since I'm dumb (note the brains part as the requirement), I pulled on the wire and guess what? THE PAD ON THE WII PCB CAME OFF. I was scared crapless. I thought I brokez0rz my Wii.
So I hooked it up and checked the Wii...thankfully, it worked still (with original US Super Mario Galaxy, no less...and before attempting the Wiikey install, I already play the US SMG, and hence all the "consequences).
Now I inspected the PCB and realized that the pin probably wasn't connected to anything at all (I think the PCB was actually just "two layer"). So I looked at the traces from online (my Wiikey was stuck there for good now, so I couldn't move it to see underneath) and realized where it's connected to on the actual Panasonic chip.
Then basically, I did what I thought was impossible: solder my 24 gauge wire directly onto the leg of the chip from the sixth pad (the only pad on the Wiikey without the metal going all the way through the PCB). Note that I never really soldered before, and I didn't practice beforehand either.
What I did was form a wire that could connect from the Wiikey pad 6 to the leg. Of course, since the wire was too thick, I ended up cutting it "length-wise" with a nail clipper to get it thinner. Then I tinned the top part of the end that was going onto the chip leg (the "top" of the final resting place's orientation). Next, I soldered the Wiikey pad part first, with the other end pointing in generally the "right direction" towards the leg. After the solder cooled down, I proceeded to work on the leg join by 1) aiming the wire directly onto the leg I want to solder, then 2) putting some solder on the iron, then "scraped" the solder from the tinned part of the leg-end of the wire onto the middle of the leg. This worked surprisingly well. Do note to not leave the iron on the leg for more than a few seconds, because you don't want to burn up the chip inside with heat transfer.
Also, make sure that your wire isn't protruding "up" (like mine is right now) so that you can actually put the dvdrom back (I can't at the moment, so I have to redo that part of the wiring).
Afterwards, I plugged everything back and it all seemed to work.
9. I ended up having to use the GCOS 1.3 disc before I could install the 1.9b (maybe you can go directly to 1.9g beta, but I wouldn't know). So I loaded up GCOS 1.3 (my Wii recognized the disc, so I guess it was a successful "hardware recovery") with a GC controller, turned the region free thing on, rebooted, plopped the 1.9b disc in and updated the Wiikey (all the while, my battery wasn't installed).
10. Tried Wiifit, no work.
Updated to 3.1U, Wiift still no work.
Installed 1.9g. Wiifit is stubborn.
Then I kinda gave up, since it keeps giving me that dancing "?" say bad disc or something when I go to the Game Channel.
Sat around mystified and depressed.
Then I remembered that I forgot to put the Wii battery back in (I don't know if that was necssary) and put that in.
I tried the GCOS 1.3 disc and enabled region free again. Rebooted, put the Wiifit in, and it said it wanted to update! So I did, and I got a new Japanese news channel and that other channel, like all the forum posts.
Then I loaded up Wiifit again and it didn't recognize the disc again (wth?).
So I tried the GCOS 1.3 region free thing again. Then it proceeded to recognize the disc!
Went in and I got a black screen about an error! =(
Popped out the disc, shut down the Wii, then tried popping in the disc again.
Wii recognized it, and I can play finally!!!
11. Tried SMG, and my Wii couldn't recognize my disc. So now I have a NTSC-J console?! (do note all my other menus are still in English).
Did the GCOS 1.3 region free thing again.
Popped in the SMG disc and got the black error screen like earlier!
Rebooted, and SMG worked!
Popped that out and put in Wiifit, and that worked too!
12. The end.
Anyways, that's the long and short of it. If your GCOS disc works, then that means you have a good hardware installation. And from there, it's a matter of trial and error with the disc and setting the region free stuff.
I hope this helps someone and I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Forgot to mentioned, I burnt all my 1.9b and GCOS 1.3 discs at 8X (forgot brand) DVD+R, and 1.9g at 12X on Sony DVD-R. I have a Pioneer DVD-110D burner with 1.41 firmware.
But my conclusion is that I don't think this is relevant at all...but YMMV.

The RESET button in place of the A one, only works for the Update discs. For the Config ones in GCOS mode you will need a GC controller.

This thread contains everything you need to solve all problems dealing wiht difficulties running backups, update, or config discs.
Take the time to read the WHOLE thread, especially the initial post and my suggestions to 666 on page 7.
Directions to do anything and everything with Wiikey resources are right here in this thread, and have been repeated more than once.
I will help you, but only if you show me that you have read the thread.
PS: I cannot believe that after everything posted all over the NET and right here at AD, we still have people burning DVD+R discs at 8x or 16x and then complaining about DRE (?!?!?)

For everyone's info (I'm getting slightly defensive here =), I only got DREs on my originals, not the Update discs.
