Ardnaxela what do you mean when you say
Quote:
(i am not downloading more than 5 at a time) but the others remain at around 1 or 2.
I'm not quite understanding that part.

Ardnexela means they do not have more than 5 downloads going simultaneously, of the 5, 2 are downloading at about 30kbs the remaining three at 1 or 2 kbs

ardnaxela...I believe you will find that if you do not have as many downloads running simultaneously your speeds will increase. By how much I cannot predict, but 5 is a little heavy

hadjir...it is not a problem to contact linksys about forwarding your ports. It is not illegal to forward ports notr is it illegal to use bit torrent. What is illegal is certain types of files. But there are just as many legal file types such as open source programs. They will be very happy to help you. I had to contact them at one time regarding a port forwarding issue and I found them very accomodating

Ardnaxela what Chocfiend is saying is really true, especially if you are running an old computer.
I would also reccomend checing your torrent client's configuration, maybe there is something that is wrongly configured.

Oh and btw, do you remember how many seeds were availble for those downloads that were going 2kb/s? And what type of internet are you on? And also, the wireless does not slow down a dl if the dl is not being firewalled, rather, sometimes dlding something wirelessly might make the dl go faster. How strong and stable is the signal that you get on your wireless reciever?

OMG i'm still getting this message: "Unable to connect. This likely means you need to adjust your port forwarding configuration, or there is no client running on that port."

Last night I was dlding a torrent file with the size of about 400megs and it was reaching speed of 100kb/s. I am pissed because the torrent, even though it was reaching those high speeds, it was being blocked by the router's firewall, and I know it would have reached much higher speeds if this annoying firewall was not blocking it.

Chocfiend, should I just activate the DMZ IP adress? And how do i activate it? What do I put in the box that is supposed to be filled in? Thanks!

Is it typical for your upload speed to be goin much faster than your download speed (which usually aint very high, which is why its so annoying)????

goldenboi i am not familiar with your router, and i've been unable to find any info on it. Call Toshiba and have them walk u thru this or get a new router that is listed on portforward.com. Personally I like linksys.

hi again everyone!

thanks for the suggestions, here are some answers to questions above.

my computer isnt old - about a year old with an athlon xp-m 2500+ processor, so dont think thats slowing things down?

my wireless connection claims to have a "very good" to "excellent" signal strength with a speed of up to (and it's generally up there, or just a little less) 54 Mbps.

my actual dsl provider allow for up to 2048 kbit/s downstream, and 192 kbit/s upstream.

i am using the abc client, i know some of you recommended not to use it, but i downloaded a couple of the others, and the speed was equally slow, so i went back to abc since i liked it the most. i think my preferences are correct. the min/max ports are the same ones as i have forwarded and opened in the win xp firewall.

i am currently downloading a file that is downloading at 1.2 kb/s - it has 195 seeds!!

and something else: as i said before, all my downloads are showing as two different shades of green - a bright one and a brownish one. the bright color comes only when i run the nat test - which always passes. does running a nat test change configurations in any way, or is it solely a test?? if the latter, than why does it change the colors of my downloads?

thanks again for all your help! if anyone has any more suggestions for how i could speed up my downloads i'd really appreciate it!

Thanks Chocfiend!
I will probably end up doing that. And also...you shouldn't have gone throught the trouble of finding help on the internet because I've done a very long search for help, and this board was the best help I could probably get. Must be teh fact that the product I bought just got discontinued.

Ardnaxela...
I can't help you much there, since everything seems to be working properly. I just wanted to know what other clients have you used. And also what are your usual upload speeds on these slow and fast torrent dlads? Are they the same or not?
Also, I don't know what the two different shades of green mean, since I've never used abc, maybe someone else can help you explain these two different shades.
I would also recommend doin an online research, if you hav't done one, on these shades.

GREAT NEWS GREAT NEWS

Ok, I am too lazy to go through the ten pages of this thread, so let me just post this and move on (someone may have already posted this):

I have Vonage, a dual networking MoBo and a Linksys EFAH08W 10/100 8-Port Workgroup Hub....and I could NEVER get Azureus 2.1.0.2 to work properly with this configuration.

UNTIL NOW!

Here is how I set it up so that I get SCREAMING download speeds, Green Smilie Face with XP Firewall installed & Everything!

In Windows XP Pro:

(1) Go to Start -> Run -> cmd

(2) From the command window type IPCONFIG and hit enter.

(3) In IP Configuration, it shows "Ethernet Local Adapter" and "Ethernet Adapter Network Bridge". THE KEY IS THE "Ethernet adapter NETWORK BRIDGE". Here is how mine looks:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.102.101
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.102.1

Ethernet adapter Network Bridge:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

(4) Right Click "My Network Places" from the Desktop and choose "Properties".

(5) Right Click on "Local Area Connection" and choose "Properties".

(6) Click "Advanced". If your firewall is already checked, Click the "Settings" button. If not, checkmark it then click "Settings".

(7) Under "Services", open your port for Azureus. I use 6882. Do this by clicking "Add". Describe the service name in the first box (Mine says Torrent1).

In the second box, "Name or IP Address) of the computer hosting this service on your network:" you will place the number that the IP CONFIG window shows as "IP Address" for your "Ethernet adapter NETWORK BRIDGE" (do NOT use the IP Address showing as "Ethernet adapter Local Area Network"). The Internal and External port numbers will be the same. For this first one, set it as TCP. Click "OK".

(8) Repeat step 7, and put EXACTLY the same information in except you will have to change the Description (Mine is Torrent2), and instead of TCP, you will make this one UDP.

NOW Your Firewall's configuration is SET.

(9) Log in to your Vonage router. Open a browser and type http://192.168.102.1. Click on "Advanced". Make sure "Enable DHCP/NAT on LAN(PC) Port" is Checked. Under "Virtual Servers", put the last 3 digits of the LOCAL AREA NETWORK CONNECTION IP ADDRESS (as opposed to the Ethernet Bridge that you used for the firewall) in the IP box. For port, put your Bittorrent port (mine is 6882). For "Transport", choose "Both". Click "Save Changes" and allow the Vonage modem to restart.

(10) Open Azureus. Under "Configuration", click on "Server". Put the number of your Bittorrent listening port (mine is 6882) under "Incoming TCP Listen Port". Place a checkmark in "Enable UDP Tracker Client Protocol". KEEP THE AZUREUS CONFIGURATION WINDOW OPEN, DO NOT CLOSE IT.

(11) Open a browser and go to http://www.whatismyip.com to get your ACTUAL IP address. That IP is what will go in the box in Azureus where we just left off that says "Override IP Address Sent to Tracker".

(12) FINALLY, in the box that says "Bind to Local IP address", put the IP Address for your "Ethernet adapter NETWORK BRIDGE"(NOT for your Local Area Network Connection).

Somehow or another, this worked for me, and I am now getting 200k/sec downloads almost INSTANTLY, and everything is green.

Hope this information will help someone.

okey... I have read every single page of this thread...
wow, too much :P

Unfortunatly it all seems to be to do with the routers and setting them up.
I use Azureus and have a green light, everything seems to be working okey. But still downloads are no faster than about 5k/s max... did get 15 once and almost wet myself
I have an NTL cable modem, there seems to be no way to port forward on this as its just a modem. I also dont have a router. its a 600k connection so should download about 70k/s which is what i get normally...

also... I have f-secure firewall, this doesnt seem to let you stop ports?... wierd program, not sure how it works but it does... I have turned this off completly and i have checked to make sure the win xp firewall is also off. completly unprotected(naked to the world) and still shite speeds.

I have also set all the settings in Azureus to the supposed optimum, these are written on every forum you see to do with poo speeds!

god help me... i think hes the oinly one...
OH... and i have checked and although my ISP does block some ports because of viruses they are no where near the ones used for torrent... the 6881

any clue how to speed this little bad boy up?

ahh also... did the ipconfig /all trick found the default gateway(supposed to be the router adress) and it gives me no access?.. i guess this is because its controlled by the ISP?

could the fact that i am using the sygate personal firewall (it's a software firewall) be causeing those slow downloads??? it shows me everything its blocking and none of that seems to have anything to do with the torrent downloads, but maybe it's something hidden in the settings somewhere?

Thanks chocfiend for all your help and everyone else earlier when I was having problems. I finally have everything working fine. I scrapped using Azureus, it has been giving me nothing but trouble, i can't get speeds any faster than 20kbs. But i started using Bittornado v0.3.7, the new one, and it's working like a charm. I'm getting over 100kbs on every download. So if you have all of your ports forwarded correctly and you still cannot get any speed in your downloads whatsoever, give it a try. I did and i got great results. BIT TORNADO ROCKS! :D
Download it at: http://www.bittornado.com

I've read through lots of threads all outlining the same instructions about looking up ones IP and using that # when opening up the ports 6881-6889. When i ran "cmd" "ip config/all" it did generate an IP for me but i did it again wheni rebooted and the Ip was different. I guess I have autoconfiguration of IP enabled. So can i disable this? or do i have to obtain a static address from mt ISP?

ardnaxela yes a firewall will impede your speeds. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/ports.mspx this site is for opening ports in the xp firewall but yours might be similar. I am not familiar with yours.

dizmarkie, ok I have posted this a million times but here goes again. BT WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY WITHOUT A STATIC IP ADDRESS. That is the FIRST step in this process. To set a static IP address go to www.portforward.com click routers, find your router, go to that page, read slowly...there is a link in the beginning of the instructions for setting a static ip address. This is something you do, not ur provider. If your router is not listed just pick any one to get the link for the instructions.

I'm workin on it

Chochfiend, thanx for the patience and help.
Unfortuneatley I can't find any info about my switch/router, even from their website. Is a switch different then a router in how it performs? i'm assuming so. its a D-link DSS 5+ switch. Even when i put in my IP address into the browser and try to configure, the username and password dialog appears but wont accept "admin" as the usernames and passwords. it automatically puts the username as my IP in the box then errors and goes to a default error message page after trying a couple times

Ok, I'm confused. I have a Linksys router and I have ports 6881-6999 (TCP) forwarded to my internal IP address. I have confirmed that the IP address is correct.

I start downloading the torrent and the tracker site shows my IP address with a port that's between the range and yet it says that I'm "firewalled". How can this be? What am I doing wrong?
