I am using Bit Tornado and I have a Linksys BEFSW114 wireless router and a motorola SB5100 cable modem. I have a feeling that whenever i have any torrent downloads going on... not only it really slows down my internet on the machine which has the download running but also all other machine on my router. any help will be greatly appreciated... my msn is urooj_khan@msn.com

I have just sat here and read this string. Chocfiend you are the MAN (or WOMAN, my apologies), thnx and congrats on your patience.
Currently at work, so have read a few things I need to check when I get home. Just curious, I'm using bittornado and have forwarded ports and gotten green for past few weeks. Now all of the sudden I'm yellow and don't know why (happened overnight)? My download speeds fluctuate greatly (5-200) and average in the 25-35 range and uploads hang in 80% range. I haven't added anything different or changed any of the settings. What can cause this to happen?
*** I saw Avast virus scan mentioned in an earlier post, there is a p2p shield included with it and for me it was what finally got me green when i realized it and disabled it. (too bad it took 2 weeks to make this find)

Chocfeind,
I am back. i have tried everything you suggested and i still get less than 5 k download speeds. I Appreciate all you have done and hope that you may have other suggestions. Here is what i have done so far:
1. Wiped HD. Formated. installed Windows XP SP/1 w/ no updates.
2. Installed Virus protection and Azurues and Java. (nothing else)
3. Bought brand new router Belkin wireless F5D6231-4
4. Opened ports per portforward.com.
5. www.grc.com shows 6881 open and others up to 6889 closed but not stealthed.
6. called suscom (isp) to verify ports open. all are opened except 6969. they will not open it.
Azurues shows port 6881...ok. I tried different programs like abc and bittornado. no luck they wont even start a download. I get green smiley faces with Azureus but speeds that really suck _less than 2k. FTP download is at 200k +. I did alot more configuring before i wiped the HD but since i started from scratch this should be working ...right? Could it be a bad cable modem? or something my ISP is doing?Thank You again for your time!

Just curious why must each pc on network have a static ip address? In an earlier post it was stated:
"This must be done for all computers on your network or you will lose connectivity."
Does this mean that you will lose your connection while downloading? Is it still necessary if only one of the pc's will be actually downloading? Does it have anything to do with download speeds? I have green and dls speeds are acceptable but havent put a static address on other pc yet and was just curious if it was necessary? (if it ain't broke dont fix it kinda thing)

Ok, I know this thread is about router configuration...but I have this problem...
I'm on a small workgroup of 6 computers and all of them are connected to a HUB (my cable modem to).
I have an internet connection of 1024kbs but my download speed is about 1-2kbs, very sad isn't it?...So I would like to ask about the steps on how to configure my Hub or this thing to get better download speeds...I've been searching about how to do this, but I can't find a thing!!
Hope somebody helps me! =(

plazz, this is off the portforward site under static ip address "It is very important to setup a static ip address, if you are going to use port forwarding. When you have port forwarding setup, your router forwards ports to the ip address you specify. This will probably work when you initially set it up. But after restarting your computer, it may have a different ip address. When this happens the ports are no longer forwarded to your ip address. So your port forwarding configuration will not work." In very simplistic terms.

Hey camdog,
I follow all your instructions in configuring my linksys router and the part where you manually input the port number under network connection and still nothing has happen. Instead I get a message, "An Error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The dependency service or group failed to start."
I went back to torrent and try downloading. The speed I'm getting is 29 and under.
Am I doing something wrong, please comment.
Thanks !!

I was wondering, could anyone help me? I have a TP-Link router, so the directions posted on the first page don't work for me, since my username and password aren't Admin - is there an alternate method of opening the ports?

Choc,
What I was referring to was the mention of every pc on the network needed a static ip address. In my situation I have bit torrent on a static address pc while the other pc has no static address or torrent. So is it necessary to have a static address on the non torrent one as well? Does it effect the static one in some way?

Dear Sirs,
My name is Jacob Anders and I am a Ontario resident. I have recently installed the WIFI combo (with Linksys router and adapter). I then tried to download a torrent but the download speed was quite low. I followed the instructions from the first page down, took me a while, but I am still stuck with yellow smilies and speeds consistantly at 10 to 15 KBPS.
I have taken various tests to check my connection, here are few of the results :
initializing...
Your local IP address is 192.168.1.100
Your global IP address is <?=$REMOTE_ADDR?>
It would appear that your machine does use NAT.
Your machine has an IP address of 192.168.1.100,
but your browser connected to this page from <?=$REMOTE_ADDR?>!
You are in the private range: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)
from the website http://www.u.arizona.edu/~trw/games/nat_or_not.php
Communications 1.8 megabits per second
Storage 215.8 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 4.7 seconds
Subjective rating Great
from the website http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/results.php
I also changed the Linksys router config to account for the 10 ports. But I am still stuck. While I do have good upload speed (of about 30 to 70 KBPS) my download is not getting me anywhere.
Please help.
