snipper45 being firewalled is different than configuring your ports for your router. Once again I will state there are three steps to this process...1. set a static ip address ...directions can be found on www.portforward. com 2. open the ports for your router directions can usually be found on www.portforward. com 3. opening ports or disabling your firewall. if you are using xp then u have a built in firewall i just posted a link for it if you have another brand check the web page for it or call their customer service. I am not familiar with every firewall product made.

wow, nice thread, and some very good advice too but I need a tiny bit more help.

I am using a dial-up pci modem to connect to the net but I use a proxy via satellite to download. I have entered the socks proxy info into azureus but I still only get 2kb/s. Now I tried the port test as posted but it shows my port is not open :( I am not using firewalls as I switched them all off to test this... I am begining to think it is AOL whch I have to use to dial-up to the net with.

Someone point me in the right direction please...on broadband I use to have no problems getting 175kb/s but now I am using satellite I just cant get it any higher than 5kb/s :(

trazzall I'm not sure I'm following you but i'll give it a shot. Whatever modem u r using has to have the ports opened. What is the make and model of modem?

Ok, I've done everything mentioned here, and I am not having any luck still. Here are my stats:

DSL, linksys router, Actiontec modem (dsl gateway) ISP is msn.

What else should I do?

Jason

Greetings everyone. This is a great thread. I have learned a lot about Bittorrent from this thread. Thank You! Well, after reading all 17 pages I can still not resolve my Slow Speed issue. I have tried everything in this thread at least once (some of them twice) Here is my situation:

I get download speeds of less than 2kbs. that is both up and down. I run straight from my Cable modem to my computer via a cat5. there are NO hardware or software firewalls running. I do not have a router. and MY ISP claims the only port they are blocking is 6969 in the port ranges 6881-6999.

Here are my specs:

Windows XP Pro
3.06 ghz P4 with HT
SATA 10,000 rpm HD
1 gig of 333mhz ddr memory
Motorola SB5100 Cable Modem
1.5 MB download and 256k+ upload.
(tested by BandwidthSpeedtest.com)
Intel Pro/100 VE Nic Card

1) I have run 6881-6889 port scanning test via "shields up" (www.grc.com) all come back as blocked.

2)There is no software on my machine (besides Azureus)except for mcafee virus protection and download scan is turned off.

3)The motorola does not act as a router/firewall.

4)Windows XP firewall is disabled

5) I can download from FTP or HTTP at speeds exceeding 150kbs

6) I tried torrentopia and my speed were at 2kbs
when i use Azureus I get no connection 0kbs and all lights are red. Ocassionally I get a OK when scanning port 6881 from Azureus. But most of the time it is blocked.

7) I use Suscom Cable out of Indiana

8) One side note: I was able to get speeds of 30 kbs on a 800 mhz celeron running Windows 2000 for one download in Azureus but after attempting to download another torrent got 0kbs every torrent i tried after that first one. <--please explain that one if you can!

Any Help would be greatly appreciated. I have been working and reading on this for over 2 weeks with no results. I even tried formatting my HD! Please Help!

cptmrgn set a static ip address directions to do this can be found on www.portforward.com then run a nat test use this site http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl if u r still having problems contact ur modem manufacturer and request them to help u forward ur ports also try a different client like bit tornado or abc

megaboy please look thru the threads...i have listed the three steps u need to take and given the links a bunch of times. You still need to set a static ip address (thats really step 1) and u need to deal with any firewalls u might have. If you are running windows xp there is a built in firewall, you either have to open ports in it or disable it.

rudo...will try to help but what have you done so far? I suggest you read thru the last 10 pages of posts. Probably everything you need to do is explained there. 1. Set a static ip address 2. Forward your ports 3. Deal with your firewall. Run a nat test when your done to check if everything is working. All the links for the directions to do these things are posted on this thread.

cprmrgn additionally you could just pick up an inexpensive router (like a linksys) and then forward your ports in the router if u do this please choose one listed on portforward.com that gives u easy clear instructions.

chocfiend: I already set my static ip, and everything else in this thread. It still didn't work.

HOWEVER, I figured out what my problem was. I had my router configured correctly, but it was my MODEM that wasn't configured. You have to port forward on your modem TOO. In order to do this, directly connect your ETHERNET wire into the modem itself (not through the router) and then go to the ip (http://192.168.0.1 in most cases) and configure your modem for port forwarding. THEN connect your router and do the same thing.

I have green smilies now!!

Chocfiend, Thank You I will try tonight. I do have a Belkin 4 port Router that I was using but when I could not get faster speeds I removed it. I tried the port forwarding through it with no luck. It was Listed on portforward.com and I followed their instructions and was unable to speed up my downloads.

when i first installed my new cable modem my downloads went instantly to 75-100k dl. but after a few days they slowed down considerably, i installed abc before and it totally killed my dls ( couldnt even connect to peers) and i wasnt using any firewall at all during all this. so i went to my cable company got a new modem and instantly started dling at 100 k again, but after a couple days it goes to shit again. and my neighbor is getting the same downloads with the same links off of suprnova, cause we do alot of stuff together and he doesnt ever have this problem. well i reformatted, got a new modem AGAIN, and then installed bittornado and it was instantly 100k dls, but now again two days later its went to shit again. my isp isnt blocking me cause i have a buddy that works for them and he says they dont block anything with packet shapers or anything that has to do with torrents. there are so many different things that can go wrong with bittorrents that i dont think any one thing applies to everyone, if anyone else has this prob and knows a fix please let me know. im sick of making trips to the cable company.

Chocfiend, Thanks again for your help. My speeds have jumped up to on average 20 kbs but i have 0kbs upload. assigned a static ip and configured my router for port forwarding. When i go to http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl I get:

Fail!
Unable to connect. This likely means you need to adjust your port forwarding configuration, or there is no client running on that port. for all ports 6881-6889.

I have download spikes of 80k now, but still no upload.

I have a Belkin F5D5230-4 Router and here is my settings for port forwarding. I set it up by following instructions from portforward.com.

Virtual Server
Virtual server settings can be entered here. For detailed information, please see the Belkin Gateway Router user's manual.

Chocfiend, I am using Azureus.

Global upload is set to 80kbs
Max upload slots per torrent is 8

One thing i did notice is that enable tracker on http port is set for port 6969 which is blocked by my isp and they will not unblock it. can i change that to another port? Does it even matter?

Thanks again for your help!
