Just wanted to begin by saying how great this site has been.
I tried to read the whole topic, but I realized at page 18 that it wasn't helping, and should post.
Anyways, I forwared ports 6881,6882, and because of Port Blacklisting and such, 49152 and 49153. I have a D-Link DI704P (rev. A), and my modem is a Terayon, TeraPro family, provided by Rogers Cable. We have two computers set up, and the other computer doesn't have a static IP since it's my fathers and he won't let me change anything.
I set up a static IP on my computer, and checked in the D-Link Config and "ipconfic /all" that they match.
I tested ports 6881 and 49152 on Azureus and both give back an NAT-error. Also on " http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl", and on "https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2". Both give me a port is closed message.
I disabled XP firewall and have no other running. The problem seems, that I just can't forward any ports.
Oh yeh, and my download speeds are usually 10kb-20kb, and I have never seen a green light in any bittornet program in my live. (not even from a screen shot =) ). Also, all the connections in birrenet are L (local). Never have seen a R (remote) connection in the advanced window. But I don't think that matters.
Any help would be appriciated, I've been stalking forums nonstop for a while now looking for similar problems.

Oh yeh, I also had that stupid Ashampoo PowerUp XP prog, that I can't seem to find a valid Keygen so I can undo whatever it did to my comp. I don't remeber what it did but I was wondering if it can affect the problem some how?

davew333 Which of those is the connection for your internet? That's the one to use. If you are not sure which of those connections is for ur internet follow the instructions on the following link to find out. http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

Hi all,
I am using the Bit torrent client Azeureus (bad spelling I guess) and all my faces are green. (therfore I don't think I have a NAT error) When I look at a file I am trying to download it says that the total download speed for the file is 1.2Mb. (all the seeds)
The question I have is that when I am downloading, the speeds are very unstable, 4-5Kb/s to peaks around 20Kb/s. My dsl line is 800 down and 128 up. What kind of downloading speeds are normal for such a file? Should i be getting downloading speeds of around 50-60 Kb/s or is the kind of speeds I am getting normal?
Thanks for any hints on tweeking my speeds.
BTW I have no firewall, Done a portscan and 6881 is open.
Thanks
PK

slower1 obviously to have had speeds of 40/60 your ports are not blocked. But check to see if you set a static ip address. Because if you did not that is your problem. A static ip address must be set for every computer on the network. The only other reason I can think of with the info you have given is slow torrents. It does happen. As more and more people use bit torrent, I've been seeing more and more limiting occur.

thanks very much for reply yours slower1

slower1.... speed is dependent on many factors so I cannot predict. How hot the torrent is, how many seeders, the connection speeds of the seeders, etc. You will probably see some that have outrageous speeds and u will still have some that just dribble along. I have never recommended more than 2 downloads at once. You can try one at a time and see if your results are better. Good luck.

Quote: vossie? did u set a static ip address for all machines? Also I am not sure if it is possible to run two firewalls at the same time, but u might want to check the settings for the xp firewall and make sure it is disabled if you are running XP.
This was in reference to my post about configuring a Belkin router. No, I haven't done that- as far as I can tell the router configuration only allows me to set a static IP for the router itself, not the clients.
And I should have said originally, I'm running Win2K, so no XP firewall mucking things up.
I took the router out of the loop for the moment, and I also shut down my software firewall (Black Ice). When I use Azureus to test ports, it still says nothing but NAT Error... Testing port 80 of all things yields NAT Error. I'm beginning to think the "port testing module" the coders wrote consists of Print "NAT Error..."
Really, you got me on that one. No firewall, no router, straight DSL modem into my machine, and it says the ports are blocked.
I went ahead and started up various torrents with it naked, and with Black Ice on. Black Ice doesn't seem to effect it. Right now the best I'm seeing is about 15k down and 8k up. Nothing has been green.
Sigh. What next, sacrifice a chicken?

hey im new to routers and bit torrent and my bit torrent wont even start downloading. The grey box comes up but it never connects. I tried following your steps, and even though I'm using a Linksys wireless router, im not getting the same screens after i type in my "default gateway" ip. I tried using my regular ip address but that doesn't get me anywhere either. I would really appreciate some help, because im still pretty bad with comps. Thanks!

vossie u do not set a static ip address in your router configuration. The instructions for setting a static ip address are on www.port forward.com. They are very simple. Follow them exactly. Most of the people who I help who are having difficulties with setting up bit torrent try to take a short cut or do not follow all the instructions. After you set the static ip addresses for all the computers on the network, then check that ur ports are forwarded correctly. Then address your firewall, either open ports in it or disable it. Last step do a nat check with this link http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl

hey, i got the router's ip address by following the steps on the original post. I got a screen, but i couldn't find anything for port triggering in the menus. I'm using a Linksys Wireless access point router Model BEFW11S4, I'm using xp, and im using bit conjurer version 3.4.2. If any of the stuff i wrote doesn't make sense it's cause I'm terrible with that stuff.

Ok, for the sake of simplicity, to repeat I've taken the router out of the loop for the moment. First task is to get it working without the router in place. Right now I'm straight into the DSL modem with only Black Ice running as a firewall.
I followed the instructions at portforward for giving myself a static IP address, thanks. That is all set, browsers et.al. still work fine so I gather it's working correctly.
However, when I go to the NAT test link, the IP address it's testing is the modem's IP address, not the one I configured for myself, and it fails.
So at this point I have:
1) Static IP address set
2) Black Ice ports open
3) no router
Still no green faces in Azureus.

Ok, the fact that the torrent check page was using the IP address of my modem, and that it was failing with a NAT error, was a giveaway to the solution.
I have Bellsouth DSL with a Westell modem, and this modem itself has NAT and port forwarding functions. Using IE, I could reach the modem's config page with its IP address (in my case 192.168.1.254).
For the Westell, when the page comes up, click on Expert Mode. Once you've entered Expert Mode, there is a new Configure Modem button. Clicking on that gives a few more buttons, the one you want is NAT. Under NAT, there is a Configure New Service button that allows you to define ports to send through to your internal IP address.
Yeah, good thing this is all very simple.
Anyway, I at least have green lights now. Which tells me that the modem and my internal firewall (Black Ice) are now configured correctly. I can now add back the router and beat it about the head and neck region until it complies as well.
My strong advice after going through all this is to start the troubleshooting process where the data first comes to you, at the modem.
1) Disconnect your router, connect your network card straight to the modem.
2) Shut down any internal software firewalls.
3) Mess with modem configuration, if necessary, until you get green connects in the torrent client.
4) Reconnect your router and thrash with it until you have green connects
5) Turn your software firewall back on and fiddle until it's not a problem.
For me, not starting at the modem has led to days of frustrating fiddling with router and firewall configurations, because nothing I was doing with either mattered until the NAT problem of the modem was corrected.

vossie i can understand ur frustration but ur advice is ncorrect. u do onot start at the modem and then advance. Bottom line is the ports to be forwarded will be in the router if u r using one not the modem. Ur problem had to do with not having a static ip and then when u had removed the router the need to then forward ports in the modem. As far as the nat test showing a different ip, thats because u have an internal ip and a public ip. That ip showing there is really immaterial, all thats important is the pass/fail and why.

vossie it should also be noted that not all modems act like a router. So not all modems can forward ports. If you look back thru the posts many ppl who have had this problem I have recommended they pick up a inexpensive router to proceed.

Hi there I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on my problem.
I have a D-Link DSL g604t router and I am having trouble configuring the port forwarding to acheive decent torrent speeds. I know I have to open up ports 6881 to 6999(i think).Do i make it TCP or UPD or both? Also I have not got a clue what to put in the bot entitled "Port Map". btw - I use Bit-tornado as my client.
any help on this would be much appreciated.
