Hey guys, ive been trying for a few days now to get the download speeds faster but ive reached the point where im just all out of ideas, so i turn to you guys. Im using the most up to date Azureus right now, and I have a linksys router up. Also on Windows XP with SP1. Ive opened up (forwarded) the ports that ive been using on both the router and manually opened them up in the ICF settings for the XP firewall and set them specifically to the ip for my computer, and also made sure to make a static ip for the computers. Since Azureus only uses one port for incoming traffic ive experimented with all the ports from 6881-6889 and am right now using port 19970. I get green faces most of the time on Azureus, so its not a NAT problem, but my download speeds never go higher than 10kb/sec, which is kinda sad compared to the 800kb/sec+ i can usually reach with my cable internet. And the torrents I am downloading each have at least 30+ seeds and many peers, with high rates each so I know its a problem on my side. Ive tried directly connecting the computer to the cable modem, bypassing the router, but I get the same download speeds and upload speeds (uploading btw i have set at about 4 max uploads per torrent and 30kb/sec max global uploading speed). It seems that people are hooking on to my connection and then disconnecting because i sometimes get pops of 20kb/sec but then it drops quickly after. Im really at a loss of what to do and I know that Bittorrent has so much more to offer than....slow speeds. So please is anyone out there able to help me out? Thanks

I just wanted to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread. I have been on Torentstorm for days downloading at 0.5kbs. Thanks to this thread I've got all green LED and good DL speeds.
Only probablem is that I had to disable PC-Cillin 2002 firewall because I was unable to workout how to open the ports, but XP firewall is still up.

GREEN FUCKIN LIGHTS
Everyone read this!!!
I had the same problems as all of you and it was pissing the shit outta me for like 2 weeks. I had opened the ports in my router, and still nothing worked. I read this whole threat and found no help.
I went backk to logical thinking. What comes before my router? My modem!
I did some research online and finally found out that my modem, a Netopia Cayman 3341 has a built in firewall also. Once i opened the ports in there too everything worked. I now get speeds up to 100kb as opposed to 10kb before.
Hope this might help some of you freaks out there

Experts - I can't open ports / port forward / disable firewall in my bogus D-link DSL-200 (Version A) - the ip address doesnt take me to a website like it does for Linksys and the other manufacturers websites as the other examples here show - tried portforward.com , even google and d-link.com arent much help
I'm running 256kbps Unlimited ADSL with TPG
under 10kbps is normal but just reached 56kbps with Azureus by following instructions from one of the great postings on here (page 12 i think - the one that says Great News Great News - very helpful)The speed only lasted for a few seconds though and back down to around 10-15kbps with yellow frowney smiley faces - bugger
I think its falling down for me at the point of logging onto to change port details on my modem (as i have no router)(stage 9 for "great news" posting) and not being able to change my unopened port - can't get the following to work in a browser http://192.168.0.1 - unless anyone has any other suggestions - i'm not sure if I can expect to get much from TPGs' 256kbps package (???) I've opened one port via Win XP firewall should i open the whole range 6881-6889 / 6999?
Newbies (like me) - I just spent pretty much the whole day trying to figure this one out and below is a bit of a summary of main topics that come up - hope it helps, people should definitely read through the thread so not to piss off the guys n girls in the know - ps anyone know about uncapping modem download limits - i'm all ears ;)
Oh yeah - i just came across a program called internet secure tunnelling (han-soft.com) - can that help with port forwarding - looks complicated -or any other applications that can do the job? Cheers in advance
Summary of topics for Newbies:- (check out Great News!

Hi Chocfiend - result of Nat test is as below:-
Fail!
Unable to connect. This likely means you need to adjust your port forwarding configuration, or there is no client running on that port.
I can't find anything of help for my d-link dsl-200 modem (theres a driver downgrade but doesnt do much for me)so u may be right about getting a router - i was thinking wireless might be a good option
Strange thing is though that i did get my first green smiley in Azureus but not great speeds - around 15kbps - i think i, and maybe a few newbies get confused about what we expect to get - i'm a bit confused if i should be happy with total download speeds of 20kbps for my TPG 256k - and if the super high speeds people are talking about are just in bps, not kbps (??)- it looks like i'm back to yellow smileys with low downloads (under 5kbps)again
Another strange thing is that it appears that i have downloaded some huge files (500mb or so) really really quickly without the bit client telling me i'm getting great speeds - unfortunately i can't get the files to work as some are .bin and .cue and i haven't looked that one up yet - but if i right click properties it says they 500mb or what have you - others are mp3 but i cant get to work but itunes etc recognises them - do u reckon i have downloaded them or does the properties function get things wrong sometimes - maybe i've solved my problem without realising it - doubt if ur psychic choc so no answer expected ;)
Just spoke with my ISP - they explained that 256kbits per second should be divided by 8 to get the total amount of kilobites (or something similar to this) - basically meaning that with 256k plan you should get 32kilobytes per second and after some loss should be around 25 kilobytes per second - i reckon this means that i should be happy with the 15-20kbps i sometimes get - is this right?
Also - they reckon that my D-link DSL-200 modem is too basic to enable port forwarding so will have to get a router as suggested by choc fiend

Okay, I've read through a ton of posts here, but I haven't found anything that seems to relate to my problem. I'll get great download speeds of 300kB/s, but then it will begin to decrease quickly to 10kB/s. Twenty minutes will go by and it will spike back up, then decrease again. My upload speeds are always around 100 or so. I'm currently connected through a university ethernet system and last year I did not have this problem. I have not changed computers or settings (including on programs like Norton) or anything since last year, yet this is now happening to me. Any help or point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

jadjc154... I am having the same problem as you. What type of modem do you have? I think my problem has something to do with my Motorola SB5100 not forwarding ports, but I can't seem to configure it.

whiteyT...many modems do not have features for opening ports. Some modems act like a router and those can be configured. If you have one you can't, an option is to pick up an inexpensive router. Just pick one that gives you clear instructions on forwarding your ports. check out www.portforward.com and check some out. Personally I like linksys. Pretty straightforward and their techsupport people have always been responsive to me.

Hi everyone, I have finally been able to reach download speeds OVER 125kb/s now on my laptop computer! I just wanted to share this info for those that might need the help. I'm running on a Westell 2200 modem that's connected to a Linksys router WRT54G, and I'm running on Windows XP home edition. I have disabled all firewalls on the modem, the router and in Windows XP. I've forwarded ports 49152 thru 65535 on both modem and router. For my Westell 2200 modem, I've also enabled static NAT for my laptop. And in the Linksys router, I've enabled UPnP. Just goto "Administration", and under "Management", just click "Enable" for UPnP. Oh and by the way, I'm using Azureus as my bittorrent client. I have also enabled the UPnP in Azureus as well. Just goto "View", and then "Configuration", and then click on "Plugins", and you should see "UPnP". I've also typed in 53000 as the Incoming TCP listen port, just goto "View", then click "Configuration", and then goto "Server" and type in 53000, I think any ports between 49152 thru 65535 will work, but that's just what I have. Just start downloading any torrent (I would prefer one that is well seeded just to test it out) and you should see a green face rather than the usual yellow one. Oh and give it like 5-10 minutes for the green face to show up before giving up. Well, I'm not 100% sure this is gonna work for those who have the same modem and router, but, it worked for me and I wish you guys the best of luck.

Right, I've been through all of this thread and played around with my ports for 2 days with no luck.. I'm beat.. I need help.
My setup is like this:
NetComm NB1300 Router/Modem connecting to my broadband provider.
NetGear WGR614 connected to the modem, serving out my wireless network.
The PC I am running Azureus is connected to the NetGear via an ethernet cable, not wireless.
I've forwarded port 6889 on the NetComm modem/router to 192.168.0.1 which is the IP address of the Netgear router. The Netgear has port 6889 forwarded to 198.162.0.2 which is the (static)ip address of my PC.
Azureus is setup to use port 6889 (Config->Server->Incoming TCP port). The XP firewall is turned off and the only other software I have running is AVG Anti-Virus which shouldn't be blocking anything.
Despite all this I still only ever get yellow smilies and the NAT test site says I have a NAT error. I've done a port check via that other site and it has 6889 listed as 'Stealth' which I think means 'Screwed'.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be greatful. The only thing I dont want to do is turn my moden into a bridge cos I want to keep its NAT firewall protection.
Oh.. and please be nice, I'm a noob at all this, Ta.

putin try forwarding all ur ports modem and router to the same static ip address u set for the computer. Also I don't believe one port open is going to be enough. I realize you still want protection but u need to give bit torrent some options here. One port is not going to do it.

Azureus and ABC wont download at all, bit tornado sits on about 5kb.. i've closed my firewall, and xp is also off...
a friend said that because my modem router is connect through USB to my computer, that, that may be my problem?

Ok for those here with trouble with there dl speeds and such to use bt u have to open ur ports no way around it , the original range 6881-6889 is not recommended by me anyway, some tracker sites have blacklisted these ports cause isp's throttle these ports thus cutting ur dl and upl speeds, try a different range instead like 14955-65535 trust me on this one.

Thanks for the advise guys but in a last ditch attempt I've finally got it working.
Turns out my NetGear router had a dynamic IP address. I thought it was 192.168.0.1 'cos that's how I connect to it to set it up but it was getting a new address from the NetComm modem/router every time I reset. Once I had the NetComm forward to that IP address instead it was all fine.
P.S. For anyone else who might have the same problem, I found the address by checking on the NetComm router/modem to see the list of attached devices. That listed the correct IP address of the router.
Now I've got green smilies and 20KB/s downloads.. very cool. Thanks again everyone.

hmm it said something different last time, but i did it again and netcheck said:
Attempting connect to: 203.113.233.21 port 6881
Fail!
Unable to connect. This likely means you need to adjust your port forwarding configuration, or there is no client running on that port.
Putin, maybe if u sent a screenshot of you port forwarding because i also have a NB1300 but not wireless.. Bit Tornado is going at 7kb/sec with a yellow circle.. i turn my firewall off and still does it.. i have Kerio Personal Firewall.. i dont know where i get a port number for that to forward. but like i said even when it is closed, still nothing..
as you can see im a newb at this.
thanks for helping me out - what u suggest now?
