Is it necessary to use the config file found on wiikey's site? If so do you have to put in on an sd, or do you burn it to dvd and just insert it in the wii? Thanks any help will be greatly appreciated.
This thread is about backing up Wii games not how to install and update a Wiikey Modchip.
Look at the read me file that is included with the Wiikey update file that you download off the site. It tells you everything you need to know on updating your Wiikey.

Just go to the wiikey website and download the config file..ITs a rar file so use win rar to extract the files to a folder..go to that folder and there should be a few things in it..double click the one for you need theres should be three bootable disks..jap us and PAL..then just burn the image that creates using imgburn at 2.4 and insert inot the wii and it hsould load as a gamecube game if al lwent well..

Hello, this is my first post :)
I am currently having problems with rawdump2 teling me i don't have enough disc space, im working off a secound drive in my machine and it has 27gb free space, however close to the end i get .net error message saying i don't have enough space.
I had the same problems with some .iso i downloaded, most didn't download because of space error, and the one that did i could not move again!
Any ideas. Dumping from the usual lg drives have .net2 installed

There are several Compaq/Dell and I'm sure other PC that has one of these LG drive installed but branded with something other then LG. I got a Dell system and on the DVD drive it is branded with Hitachi Data Storage with the model GDR-8161B. Lilely these LG got branded with another name so pay attention to the model. I also got another Compaq system that has Compaq on the DVD drive with the model 8160B. I will test this model out since it wasn't mention is 8160 will work or not.
I have these drives and will test it out in a bit:
**EDIT**
1) Sony drive DDU1621 = failed
2) GDR-8161B = success
3) GDR-8160B = failed
4) NEC DV 5800A = failed
I will grab a few more at work and do more testing.
I just got a new computer. In the process of tearing my old Gateway apart, I noticed that the DVD-ROM was a Hitachi branded LG drive, with model number GDR-8162B. Have you ran across this one yet? Anybody know if it will read the Wii disks? I will test it myself, but I'm just getting started with this back-up deal, so I don't have the RawDump and all of the other stuff just yet. Plus, I have to get my new computer squared away. Just wondering if anyone has already tried this model. I'll try it out as soon as I can. If I haven't heard from anyone else by then, I'll post my findings. Thanks.

First post, would like to say thank you to the original poster and other helpers first.
Is anyone able to use the said method to backup a backup? I tried to backup a backup and always receive the error message. Rawdump reads the backup disk OK but the file name is a wired character. Once I click "star dump", the error message shows up in about 3 seconds after. I do have .NET 2.0 and 3.0 installed. I have also tried Rawdump 0.4 and 2.0. PIO mode also selected but none can make it to work.
Anyone experienced the same thing? If so, is there a solution to it? My backup, from ISO, is getting worse and worse. TIA.

I had the same issue and the only way I was successful in backing up a backup was to make a direct copy using Nero, (reads from LG drive and burns straight onto DVD drive). I mucked around for a long time trying to figure out if I had the .net framework installed properly, and removing and updating firmware on the DVD burner which didnt work). I did however burn the backup of a backup directly to DVD and was successful.

I'm just wondering but, how can you be able to burn the iso with that lg dvd-ROM drive? wouldn't it have to be a dvd burner drive or something?

Thanks, but I use MagicISO. It isn't free but it works great. I have never had a problem with it. MagicISO supports dozens of img files, even ones that Nero doesn't.
I also have another inquiry. What is the best LOW COST dvd burner?

lol, dont worry im cheap to, but thats as low as a "good" burnner is you can get like a 20$ one but 1/4 games will work....but with this most of games will work dednds how you burn it. and you can get 100 verbatim DVD-R disk for like 25 bucks..so iut not that bad. and if not guna rip games dont get the LG disk reader...all it dose is read not burn.

Hey, I was wondering what kind of dvd to buy. I have a sony burner. It says DVD multi recorder on it. Does that mean it does -r and +r or just that it can burn cds and dvds? I've heard that sony is on the +r side so should I just get that?
So far I have just burned a Mario Party 8 iso that I downloaded onto a DVD+RW (with wiikey) and it worked fine. Is there any need to get a different type or should I just stick with the rw if it works?

you should be burning all your wii games to dvd - r ....doesnt really matter the brand...but make sure you dont buy the generic ones... some + Rs will work, but the "book" says use -r's.

Just like to say, until yesterday, I had not so much as installed a cd-drive. Today I installed myself a 8164, backed-up a Wii game, a Wii back-up, and I am just finishing my first Gamecube back-up. I credit it to Bunny's walkthrough, and the helpful others with backing up the back-ups.
A few pointers for those in or around the Toronto area:
- Pacific Mall has locations that can install the WiiKey for you for $100, chip included, or you can get the system pre-modded as well for about $500.
-You can get the ROM drive ( LG-8164 ) there as well, assuming its not sold out ( was only 1 other in stock, but the other shop was getting more.).
- Though I've used others, TDK seems to be the Dvd of choice amongst those who originally provided my back-ups, and they work beautifully.
- My burner is nothing fancy, dosn't have a marked brand on it, and it does the job.
- All the answers are here, but please read from the start, repeating questions is understandable, but makes finding answers for others more difficult.
Keep up the good work!
