You can buy the lg drives and buy an external enclosure for the dvd drive, allowing it to become an external drive via usb. This should work.

Question on using the LG Drive. I recently purchased a drive as per the specs, can backup DVD's etc no problem. However although i reads the gamecube disc it once it gets past the Seeds part in Raw Dump it comes up with this error (which i think is a windows issue), I have reset, tried realoading Net framework 2.0, cleaned disks tried many disks, same error same position just as it starts to dump. I am obviously trying to set my backup system up before i purchase a wii. Any help would be appreciated, i have a backup copy of windows but cannot update it (is it cause i am missing maybe the latest security patches etc??)

Here is the error.

Guys fixed it.

Change Device 1 Transfer Mode to PIO Only.

was in the forumn just not related to that issue,

if anybody else has issues with this expection error, make sure you change your device 0 to PIO only if a master and Device 1 to PIO only if it is a slave.

Just an FYI...
Although most DVD's will back-up Wii games, some ( like Memorex ) will degrade during use. I beleive its the heat from the system, but anytime I played a back-up for more than an hour, it would fail to play next time ( I'm on my third copy of Scarface ). So don't be too cheap ( like myself ;p ), it'll cost you in the long run. TDK's are getting harder to find, so grab 'em where you can.

So basically I know nothing about modchips or drives and really am not that computer saavy. So please bear with me. I know there are alot of modchips out for the wii and I want to buy the right one but I don't know which one is the right one. I just want one that will allow me to play burned games without any trouble. Seems to me that the wiikey is getting alot of praise but I'm not sure which one to go with... any suggestions?

I just installed the cyclowiz v2 and it is not working.
I hear rumors the cyclowiz V3 is coming out.
I emailed tec support and get no response.

looking around the internet I get the same impression that the wiikey is the best. So I just ordered one and I will have to chuck the cyclowiz v2 in the garbage.
the one very bad thing about the cyclowiz v2 is it can be updated by downloading the new software version and burning it to a dvd. BUT if it gets hung up in the middle of the update, the wiz is no good and must be replaced.

The wiikey can also be updated with a dvd but it can recover from a bad update and can be updated again.

here is a link to a comparison chart of the mod chips:

Quick question? I've had success so far with my games, but every now and then after playing a game for 10 minutes or so I get an error says the game disk can't be read and check your Wii manual. I'm running Wiikey modchip and like I said before it only happens now and then. Is this a problem from the media I'm using or is it something else, please let me know thanks.

Sounds like it is most likely your media (look back a half dozen posts... )

From what everyone is saying they are all singing the praises of the TDK DVD's.

Others are "bashing" Memorex's (I use those and Sony's) and I have had NO problems. I would suggest switching brands and trying that. Then once you have a brand that works for you, stick with it.

Another problem you might be having is buring the game at too fast a speed. I wouldn't recommend burning at a speed over 4x (that's what I burn at). At a slower speed you are less likely to experience buffer-underrun or burn anomalys.

I reckon the first line of the first post in this thread should say:

PLEASE NOTE THE LG DRIVES REQUIRED FOR Wii GAMES ARE NOT DVD BURNERS

Some people just lack the intelligence or the patience to read the posts properly. I READ all the posts got my LG drive (but cant get it to burn :p), rawdump, and the .NET framework and everything worked fine. BTW I use Ritek discs and also use Alcohol 120% to burn as i found i was getting a lot of errors whilst using Nero not just with Wii games but also with Xbox games.

I just have a simple question. How do I know which blank DVDs support 2x? I have some right now, but they only support 4x the slowest.

Your a little confused, The 4x rating is the fastest you can burn it.
Of course if it can be burned at 4x it can also be burned at 1x, 2x, or 3X.

I just want to point out that the game does not have to be the exact byte size because i burned trauma center and it works fine, on the guide it says that if it's off by even one byte it;s a bad dump, apparently is not.

Ok so I have just read ALL the pages of this Forum and I have a question. I saw there are websites to download my wii games from. So would it be a good idea to instead of buying an LG drive to download the games in .iso file and then just burn it? Can you even do that? Am I even making sense lol? Anyways, thanks in advance.

The DVDs I have are DVD+R 8x and apparently the spec on my drive said the slowest it can support is 2.4x on DVD+R, but when I put them in, the only options I got were 4x, 6x, and 8x. Any idea?

Even if you have a 8x burner and can burn at 6x, 4x, 2x and 1x, you are still limited by the media.

Nowadays, for quite a few different types of DVD's the slowest burn speed supported is 4x (2x and 1x are now really rare and are usually really cheap generic DVD's which we should all stay away from like the plague) :)

put your 8X dvd in and select 4X that should work fine.
if your wii can't read the backup you just made, you should try buying TDK 16x DVD-R and burn those with the 4X setting.
(note the minus R)

I see, so would burning the games at 4x be a problem? Say for instance, this: http://www.officemax.com/max/solutions/p...kOID=1611587284 Can you tell if it can use at 2x by looking at it?

Not necessarily websites, but you can find torrents on websites and use a client to download. I've had hit-and-miss success with these. Sometimes a site will say there are a hundred seeds, but when the download starts, there are only three or even zero. I have yet to see a download with more than five seeds. It takes a few days to download a file since your speeds will be 10 - 100k, but again, that depends on leeches vs. seeds, your client configuration, and network setup. I find it easier to just use an online game renting site or borrow from people locally (or rent from BB in a pinch for $8) I've tried many, and got about 10 total downloaded in the last month. Four have worked, six have either been corrupted, or PAL where I can see the game in the channel, but just not play it. Usually the game will get 20-80% done and all the seeds are yanked or something like that.

I dont understand what is it you dont know what to do? You take the cover off your PC, find a free 5.25" slot, install the drive in it, connect IDE & power cable, put cover back on. BINGO easier than changing a light bulb.
